How to deal with a hateful TL - Little MT

Posted: Apr 17, 2015

I have worked at the same company for over 5 years.  I have been switched from account to account and team leader to team leader and am now currently under a team leader who I absolutely loathe.  This woman is so hateful.....I hate her.  Nothing I do is good enough for her.  I can never seem to get my work done quick enough for her.  It seems it is all about quantity, not quality.  I pride myself in my work, hardly ever leave blanks, never have any complaints on my quality, but all she ever nags me about is turnaround time.  I get my worked turned in before the system says it is late but she still complains about it.  She has now limited to where I can only take a few jobs at a time like I am a newbie and didn't even notify me.....how do I deal with this woman?  Any of you ever had to deal with a TL who seems to have it out for you?  If so, how did you handle the situation?  Thanks!

Conflicts are hard - sm

Where I work we are only allowed two jobs at a time unless they want you to do more and then we get assigned more. I do not know where you work, but conflict is hard sometimes when you cannot see each other face to face to resolve. If it is an abusive situation you can go to the supervisor of the TL or Human Resources if your company has that, if you cannot talk to the TL directly or her supervisor.

Difficult to say since we only have your side of things - but a couple of ideas (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
1. From your post, it seems like you might just tough it out for a bit because it looks like they move you around a lot. Take a "This too shall pass" attitude - sort of like people on the East Coast have had to do with the snowfall this year.

2. Simply put in a request to the appropriate person for transfer to a different team/account.

3. Shut down the hate engine and see if you can untangle what seems to be a lot of miscommunication between you and the TL. Do you REALLY understand what HER expectations (not the client, not the "official" TAT - but HER EXPECTATIONS) are for the members of her team? Tell her that you want to be a successful, productive member of HER TEAM, and that you would like HER HELP AND GUIDANCE in achieving that goal. People respond to the recognition of their leadership and an appeal for their assistance.

You see, IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU ARE MEETING THE "OFFICIAL" ACCOUNT REQUIREMENTS. You need to work with this TL and accept the fact that she apparently has her own expectations, AND you need to acknowledge that she IS the lead on the account with every right to have those expectations.

TL - anon

I'm guessing you are a TL or a doormat or have been lucky enough to never deal with this issue. On here from company to company you see people upset with how they are treated, but someone else will like the company. Most of the time it is directly related to the TL/TSM or whatever you want to call them and how the person is getting treated.

Neither a TL nor a "doormat" but I've lived awhile and - know what works and what does not.

I guess the only "acceptable" response on this board would be if I ginned up the hate thing that the OP described, but frankly that's an immature AND ineffective way to go about things.

She said she was looking for strategies to deal with the situation, and I gave her three different approaches. One of those strategies would be trying to turn the situation with the TL around and find a way to work with her, so exactly what is wrong with that??

Consider it from her side of things - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
This is just my guess, but it is one way to explain what is going on. It might help you understand the other side of the story.

If she has been trying to get you to turn work around faster and has now had to limit you to a few jobs at a time, it is because you were taking too many at once and not being able to complete them promptly.

You feel that you only have to complete them before the system says they are late. She has been trying to tell you that that is not enough. You have been slow compared to others, and that is dragging down the turnaround time for the company as a whole. It isn't enough to take a lot and not get to it until the end of your shift or the next day. Taking a smaller amount and getting to it right away, then taking a little more, would be better for the client and your company.

Since you would not listen, she had to limit you. Chances are that you have been shifted from one TL to another because they could not deal with you.

Their expectation is for both quality and quantity. You have to be able to give both. Being highly accurate is expected of everyone. Everyone else is highly accurate, too, but they are also productive. You have a problem with productivity. You don't do enough or you don't get around to it for too long. It sounds as though you may dawdle for much of your shift, then clear it in a burst of speed, or you might have to work over, or you might leave it for the next day. You might even be putting what you don't do back in the pool, not giving others time to complete it.

Basically, it sounds like you are reserving work for yourself by taking more than you can do.

You can't deal with this TL until you understand her side of it. Things can't be about what you want to do and the way you want to do them. Your company and the customer come first.

this is really well written - and good advice

[ In Reply To ..]
It probably hurt the OP's feelings to read it, but I think you are dead on. Now the OP should just keep her head down, do the two jobs that come in, do the next two, do the next two, and see if the situation doesn't miraculously improve.

Good advice but some TL are just hateful. - Sweets

Your advice about trying to improve productivity is very good, but you underestimate the plain vindictiveness of some TL. About 11 years ago, a wonderful lady ran an MT support group in my local area. We would meet once a month for breakfast and work-related seminars. I learned a lot at these meetings, and one of these lessons included how hateful some of these "supervisors" were to people they did not like. They would deliberately give the ESL jobs, move to the worst accounts, or limit work to people they did not like. Most workers would quit after such treatment each month the TLs would joke about that. Luckily, my accounts were not with these people. Unfortunately, eventually I did end up working with some of these people and I was also subjected to these Nazi TLs, whose power trips were too stressful. I was a very good MT, one of their best, but I refused to have this stress in my life and quit, went to a new account, but now no longer do MT. Even the support group has disbanded.

This still goes on where I work and it is obvious - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
This is rampant among our TLs where I work and they say the don't do it to the MTs but they do. We know it. They know it. There is a revolving door because of it and management has yet to stop this behavior. Yet it is the behavior costing the company money because of a revolving door. It is a moral issue that goes to the core of civility. It really is.

But, that IS how the TL sees it. It is her view of it, - hateful or not.

[ In Reply To ..]
Not saying the TL isn't hate on wheels, but just that that is how SHE perceives things. THAT is what you have to deal with to keep your job. Whether the TL is right or not makes no difference.

Bullies are everywhere. You can quit and find another bully somewhere else, or you can deal more effectively with the bully you have.
So this is like stay with the abusive spouse - MT
[ In Reply To ..]
You can deal with the abusive spouse because that is how HE perceives it. That is what you have to deal with the keep your marriage. Whether the HUSBAND is right or not makes no difference.

Bullies are everywhere. You can quit and find another bully HUSBAND somewhere else, or you can deal more effectively with the abusive HUSBAND you have.

Yeah, the domestic abusive shelters would agree (not).
I would call this perceived abuse - Gross exaggeration

If the worst thing your boss does is manage your workload and request that you get it done on time, I would say that things are not so bad. At least you have work; many MTs have NJA on a regular basis.

I've had mostly really great supervisors. Yes, the work and quality had to be there, but some just have a better way of handling people. In the 12 years I've been doing MT, I've only had one REALLY HORRIBLE TL/TM, whatever. It was a nightmare. I kept wishing she would go away, but that didn't happen.

I did end up leaving MT. It wasn't because of her, per se, but leaving such a horrible TL sure made the quitting easier. I would have quit whether she had been my TL or not, but it was just more fun leaving, what with the way she was. Her personality was CLEARLY one of those on a power trip. Sometimes it's hard to judge in e-mails and such, but I could tell by her tone on the phone that she was just "one of those."

TAT is all that matters these days. The TL limiting how sm - acuteMLS

many jobs you can take at a time is directly related to that.

I know you see a time due in the system and feel like you only have to get it back before the time it's due, but by doing that you're also eliminating any cushion for upload issues, document issues, opportunity to review before the client gets it.

I've worked in QA before and people literally would turn in work 5 minutes before it was due to the client and I had 5 minutes to fix whatever was wrong, which was impossible sometimes.

You can only work on 1 job at a time anyway, so if you are limited to 2 jobs at a time (example), type 1 and return it, take your next job and request another job so you always have 2.

What Is The Deal With VR?
Jun 27, 2012

Okay, guess I will show how dumb I am.  I am an MT in a in-house office for a urologist. he dictates, I listen and transcribe. i get on here and read everyone fussing about VR. I get that VR is voice recognition...but what is your job? If you are an MT, you have VR, I realize it gets it wrong sometimes but what do you do? Read it to make sure VR gets it right and then make the changes?  Just wondering.  Any reply appreciated. Thanks! ...

Has Anybody Else Had To Deal With This?
Aug 06, 2013

A little over a month ago my old PC finally crashed after 10 good years.  I replaced it and had to put antivirus on it (of course).  I ended up taking my son to the ER and can't afford insurance, so I ended up paying out of pocket for his antibiotics.  (Sad that the antibiotics cost less than a month of insurance for the two of us.)  My antivirus expires the day before I get my check.  Are there any safe alternatives for one day until I get paid?  ...
