Need help-starting up own MT business-advice appreciated - Sarah

Posted: Jan 04, 2010

I am starting up my own MT business and have been in the process for about six months now.  I just do not want to get it up and running and realize that I forgot something or messed up somewhere down the line.  My main concern is the new HITECH Act that goes into effect in February.  I plan on having a couple of girls working for me from their homes and I am just confused on the exact rules and regulations that coincide wtih this new act.

Also, I need advice on the best way to obtain new accounts.  I have thought about sending out brochures but I am not quite sure what to put in them.  I have been advised not to purchase a program yet and to wait to see what that account holder would like and then purchase one.  I have looked at two and the price difference is incredible and it all just depends on the account holder's preference (800 number, electronically docking...etc).

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! I really would like to get this business underway as soon as possible.  Thank you so much!

I have my own IC business with 3 helper MTs. The main thing to keep in check is 1) HIPPA regulations and 2)Tax matters for your business.

I never did brochures or yellow page ads. I was listed in the business pages of my local phone book, county phone book and then also listed in the two next biggest towns around where I live. I did have to pay to be listed in some of the books, but it was fairly cheep compared to other advertising modes. Doing this plus going in personally to medical facilities and talking with the manager has given me the best response in obtaining accounts.

Also, I do not have an 800 number or any system setup for docs to call in and dictate on. I only do accounts that offer their own electronic dictation system that I can use to receive/submit the work on, which is most hospitals have already. I also do cassettes, which I have found is the preferred method for most of the non-hospital facilities in my area.

So, before putting out a lot of money into an 800 number or professional brochures or your own electronic dictation system, I'd make sure the demand would be there for that kind of investment first. A lot of times the simpler the better.

Good Luck!!

I also have my own business. I work along and do cassettes and doctor's notes, very simple. I only posted my resume on MTStars. Also, 11 years ago my dear husband called 100 doctors and we got 2 accounts, both cassettes. The one account since moved out of state, but was very nasty.

Starting A Business
Jan 29, 2011

Hi. I am new to MT boards here but wondering about how one would start a home business. I have worked for companies as a subcontractor but wish to advertise for myself and get some work from local doctors on my own. I would likely need a mini transcriber if I have to pick up and drop off tapes, but how does one do it over the internet? Would there be a way to get it through email set up of some kind with audio wav files that they could dictate to and I access it from there and just type and emai ...

I am wondering if anyone can give me any advice on how to start my own business.  I am tired of working for 5 cents a line.  This is below minimum wage.  I did get in touch with Transcription Gear and they gave me a lot of insight on the equipment I would need.  I am looking for info here on what is a fair price per line or page fee and also how to market myself the right way.  Any advice would be appreciated. ...

Are We Appreciated
Jan 30, 2011

I wonder if any companies anymore both big and little appreciate their MTs for what they do, if they are high producers, good quality and in the case of an IC work a good dependable schedule for them.  I get the feeling that they just think oh well they can all be replaced with all these MTs out and about looking for jobs.  I never saw so many hits on jobs as I have seen lately.  I dont know how anyone ever gets a job unless there are a lot of underqualified people out there looki ...

I'm having on H*** of a time with my dentist's office.  They have set me up for partials; lots of impressions and bringing me in for a final fitting.  I've coughed up $683, as they said this would be my portion after the insurance coverage.  Apparently they sent a fax asking Aetna about my insurane coverage, even giving them the ADA code for the procedure and getting a "yes" for coverage.  Now....come to find out the info they requested from Aetna was NOT a "pr ...

TT Managers Are Appreciated (sm)
Feb 11, 2015

I have had only good experiences with TT account managers.  They have always answered my emails promptly and been very willing to be flexible with my scheduliing.   AD has always taken the time to make personal phone calls to MTs when more info is needed or something didn't go through the system, to make sure they get paid on time.   I'm sure they share our stress over the accounts going to EPIC.  I just wanted them to know they are appreciated for all their hard wo ...

It's Great To Be Appreciated!
May 12, 2015

My QA scores have been primarily 100%, the lowest something like 99.6 and very infrequently anything less than 100%. My QC scores are consistently 0% as I never send anything to QC. I work my schedule without exception. Even when there is no work, I remain logged in and ready to work. My work is excellent as I have been transcribing for a very long time. I sent my TSM an email that I was resigning. The reply was "I'm sorry to hear that you are planning on resigning." I was not planning on ...
