Hi. I am new to MT boards here but wondering about how one would start a home business. I have worked for companies as a subcontractor but wish to advertise for myself and get some work from local doctors on my own. I would likely need a mini transcriber if I have to pick up and drop off tapes, but how does one do it over the internet? Would there be a way to get it through email set up of some kind with audio wav files that they could dictate to and I access it from there and just type and email it back. I am thinking that would be ideal. Also maybe since it is medical files it should be uploaded to a secure server till they retreive it? Any help at all is appreciated.

...if you are not using whatever they are using, it would be a problem. If they're using cassettes, and you want to do it via Internet/voice file, you would have to pay for your set-up as well as their's. Just throwing this out there.

Good luck. Keep in mind a lot of clinics don't even have transcriptionists anymore, nor do hospitals.

and he uploads it to his computer and emails me the files. I play them on Express Scribe and email the typed documents back to him by my regular email as attachments.

No secure servers needed here. His office people print everything on their end. Yes, it's a medical facility, federal goverment - the whole deal. He and I are the only ones who hear the voice files or see the documents.

Unless you plan on, or hope to, have a large amount of clients, I'd say the email of voice files is good to start with. Start small and see if you can handle that amount of commitment.

to send confidential files. I do federal work also and psychiatric and I use Mydocsonline, doesn't cost a lot and is HIPAA compliant. They can upload audio and you can send back the files using it. You can get a 30-day trial I think. It's easy to use. Good luck!

for security reasons, although they were working on possibly getting it allowed. My company still requires us to immediately report any dictator who requests a copy be sent by e-mail, though.

You'd better add real high in your things-to-do list educating yourself on the laws regulating your work. You can't count on your clients to save you both from devastating defense costs and fines.

I use MPTools6 to send reports encrypted. It meets all the HIPAA compliance requirements (keeps a log of what reports are sent where) in addition to encrypting them. If memory serves, it is only about $45 for the person who needs to send the encrypted email. It is free for anyone to open the email with your assigned passcode.

I use TrulyMail for sending encrypted PHI and it's free for both sending and receiving...and it's fully HIPAA compliant.

I know that there is a lady on line who has a booklet out there that you can download regarding home transcription business. I also know that in order to get work from other places they may use their own system and may want you to as well.

I would have a very good printer available for good clear documents.
Of course save all your work on a hard disk.
I would place an add and send out flyers to every place you possibly can. Maybe you could have someone close to you be available to pick up and/or drop off work.
Set up your business with an accountant.
I have thought of this myself as well. good luck.

I believe greed has taken over the transcription industry. If the client is charged so much per line, does he only have to pay half for voice recognition? I doubt it. The conglomerate I type for mostly (which is about 30 university clinics, each with 150 or so non-English-speaking residents) sends almost everything in "letter" form. Trying to figure out a way to live in the country and still work.
