Meridian HCS - NJA - GloomyMT

Posted: Jun 21, 2012

Is anyone else working for Meridian having problems getting work?  Its a great company to work for, but I can't keep waiting for the work to come.  Did they hire too many MTs?  Just curious to know how other MTs are doing with Meridian.

My recent experience - MMT

[ In Reply To ..]
Sent a resume. Got an email about an account they were staffing to see if I was interested. Said I was. Never heard back. Sent another email. Waited 2-3 days, the owner/manager then called me. Hired me. Sent me the new hire paperwork, benefit, pay information, etc. Was going to get back to me about working out a mutually agreed upon schedule. Waited 2-3 days. Heard nothing. Emailed her. She said that work was really slow and that she hated to bring someone on without any work so to bear with her, let her figure out of the lapse in work was because of gains made with VR or what, and she would figure something out and get back to me ASAP. Haven't heard from her sense, but all this was enough to let me know, this is not where I wanted to be. It was crazy. No work - why hire? Found the whole thing extremely strange, although I had heard wonderful things about the company prior to pursuing employment there.

Oops - ignore my typos and mispelled words! Geesh! Haven't had my coffee...it's too early for me! :-/

No jobs - WanderingMT

[ In Reply To ..]
There are never any jobs available. They said if you want jobs you need to work evening/midnight shift. Used to be a good place to work. They need to start making some positive changes because it sounds like a lot of us are becoming very unhappy.

I've been with then only about 3 months, switched different accounts, switched to 2nd shift (not really my first choice), still no job! 14 hours this week.

Not what it used to be - NJHA

[ In Reply To ..]
Been with the company over 8 years. Work was always plentiful, management was always honest, $$ was great.. and then came VR, and did what we all knew it would do - take our jobs away! Along with a 40% reduction in pay, we now have to sit around for 12-14 hours a day just to wait and wait, and click and click to grab the 1 or 2 jobs that download an hour! Honesty is not forthcoming. It is more than frustrating. Unfortunately, I don't think this is the only company doing this. I keep waiting for the "new accounts" that have been promised that are coming on board. I already work weekends and evenings - and there's no work during those times either!

Need to restructure - GloomyMT

[ In Reply To ..]
Sounds like they really need to do some restructuring. It's a shame we have to work like this, especially those of us who do a great job and take pride in our work. I love being an MT, but it's getting very frustrating having to sit around all day, evening, and weekend waiting for the jobs to appear. I just wish they would appreciate us more...but that's wishful thinking, I know. Thanks for everyone's input!

Meridian - twiddling my thumbs too...

[ In Reply To ..]
I just started working for them 4 months ago. The place is strange. Never get any account update emails, never know how much work there is,strict as hell, none of the employees are supposed to communicate with each other, and now I'm clicking and clicking to get whatever job might come in. I don't know what they, or we are going to do if we can't make that 1500 lines a day for insurance.
No-No on employee communications!! - NJHA
[ In Reply To ..]
As evidence by that last Email we got from management stating that the <<"ALL is not your place or any employee of
Meridian other than Management to send out such a note utilizing "everybody">>

They KNOW we are all in the same boat - why shouldn't we have each other to talk to and lean on. Who knows better than our coworkers what we are going through? JMO
Employee Communication - GloomyMT

I really believe that some MTs are still making the great $$, might be getting choice of reports, have multiple accounts, etc., so management doesn't want us all to communicate about that. Either that...or they are afraid we will all strike!!
The only ones who made out are the slower producers - NJHA
[ In Reply To ..]
I was transcribing between 350-400 lph before all this VR nonsense. I listened and rolled my eyes when they said VR is going to "improve" our line counts. I knew there was NO WAY on God's green earth would I ever double my lines to 700-800 with VR. The docs don't even talk that fast! The MOST I have gotten in VR (at a speed rate of 150%) was 550 lph, and that was only on a rare occasion! Between the pausing, the flipping through charts, eating, coughing, and whatever the heck they do while dictating, the best of the best don't talk fast enough to give 700-800 lph. So.. who benefited from VR??? The person who was transcribing 150-200 lph, that's who! Good for them! I'll take transcribing any day over VR - and even though they changed the format (no headers), I'm still able to get about 300 lph, which still makes me more $$ than VR - but I took a HUGE cut between the lowering of the line rates and the lack of lines available. Unfortunately, it is the high producers who are the ones that got the kick in the stomach.
I brought it up when I first hired on - to have some kind of...

support group for the obvious reasons of helping each other and just plain comradery of being on the same account. I was told "some of the MTs were being harassed." Huh? I've already had dealings with that MM, she's so straight up hateful.

What is really odd? I have been working all day, when there is work. Not one single email has come through all day, not one.

Would anybody be interested in yahoo IM for work? I'll get busted probably for mentioning it, but I for one am lonesome totally alone in cyber world.
IM communication - cyber loner
[ In Reply To ..]
In my opinion, one of the best reasons to work at home, in cyber space, is the ability to get work done w/o the interruption of coworkers...IM would seem to only serve as another way to distract me from my work, but again, thats just me ;)

awsome - i will email you my yahoo im!

Not just the content, but the tone... a little ominous. I've worked for companies that encourage networking between employees... you have a support system and it makes you feel more connected. I'm really surprised ths company FORBIDS us from doing that. wow.

I too am Gloomy, NJA. I am beginning to wonder if I made a mistake coming here. It is a nice company, but that doesn't pay the bills.

Meridian - former mt

Meridian pays more per line and thatâs great when you can get lines. After many years of working with them, I can tell you they run out of work every summer, every spring, the day or few days after holidays. The only time you can truly count on work is the week(s) preceding the winter holidays. When you donât get an update, itâs because itâs NJA time.

They want you to be flexible (that means start at 4:00 a.m. and be willing to drag your workday out until midnight, seven days a week, unless you one of the favorites who always get their line counts and when you question this you get rude and condescending, not to mention unprofessional dialogue.

The management style there dates back to about the mid 1970s (management by fear). They would rather blame people then change a failing process. Take the email system for instance. They want the MTs to email the client and inform the client they changed a work type. You literally had to make your own email chain (and this changed frequently) of six or seven people. For people who were so controlling, that was bizarre not to mention inefficient. Yet it was saving them money, because MTs are not paid to send emails. MTs would reply back on a management email because management never bothered to set up email groups and then hide the recipients. Why change a process when you can blame a person for a âmistakeâ?

My favorite email was the JFDI email that was sent. It was unprofessional, threatening, and absurd given it was a Sunday, the anniversary of terror attacks and of course there was no work. I emailed the sender back and said what does JFDI means and got âjust freakin do it, she was frustrated.â I replied back âwow.â

The bottom line, transcription and VR are dead. Go back to school and get involved in EMR there are many jobs in this field. I applied for a HITECH scholarship and received it and all of my classes were online and 100% free. I now make $72,000 a year implementing EMRs (NextGen and Epic) at clinics and facilities. I did my paid internship as a scribe teaching physicians who had difficulty conforming to EMR. You have to be willing to get up, get a shower and go to work. As transcription fades, and EMR emerges, think about coding as this will open up as a remote job more and more.

Once EMR is widespread and fully implemented across the US, then facilities will start failing Joint Commission surveys because they rolled out âmeaningful usâ as fast as they could to get the $$$, and patient safety has been compromised due to documentation (the people entering information into the record have no clue what dangerous abbreviations are), most of them cannot spell and we all know how many drugs can be erroneously documented due to spelling.

The need for professional MTs filling new roles due to EMR will emerge, I promise. Scribing is a good way to get involved in EMR, you can do this for a 1-physican office, clinics, ERs, and inpatient facilities and hold out for top dollar (impress them with your typing speed and expert knowledge about patient safety as it relates to documentation. Donât sign up with so called scribe companies or pay any money to be a scribe (lets nip that in the bud) you already know how to scribe.

Be smart, and if you are being told to be flexible about work, then do it on your terms.

This is THE best post - I have ever read on this board.

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, in the 18 years of my MT "career," it is the strangest company I've ever worked for.

I did actually inquire to my local colleges for coding, but didn't follow through with it.

You got this scholarship, got your training online with totally no cost to you, and look where you are now.

I've been burned out with transcription life for a long while, but just unsure what direction to go in.

I will most definitely be doing some serious research on this.

Meridian - Great Post!

Very informative! Thanks so much for taking the time to send that! Yes, I had to Google the JFDI that Joann put in her email, but what I found was not "freakin"! My mouth actually hung wide open when I read that...unbelievable actions for a supervisor.

very little work - Kreed

There has been low work since xmas. Very extended holiday for the docs, I imagine, when you include New Year's, Easter, Memorial Day, and 4th of July.

I agree... great post - nm

No work - Tired of Waiting

[ In Reply To ..]
There is never any work. And then if you ask for work they take it away from someone else, then those girls don't have any work!

And if they don't like you, then you get the crappy dictators or the jobs that you make $5/hr on. But someone is still making $$ I'm sure. Someone out there is getting the easy-money jobs. Seems that QA is able to designate who the jobs go to.

Then you get all these emails of us making errors. What do they think, that we are going to try and do perfect work when we are underpaid and underappreciated! Do we get accolades when we do a great job on a report or spend the extra time making sure it is perfect?! Maybe they should start treating us better and then we'll do better.

Please forgive my ignorance, but how did you learn EMR to be able to teach it to physicians, clinics, and the like?

How MTs are doing at Meridian? - Not so good now. sm

This has been a wonderful company to work for in the past. However, different does not always mean better. Just because you CAN change something does not mean that you SHOULD. I think they were sold a bad bill of goods with the new VR system. It is slow, cumbersome, and not being used for the intended purpose for VR. What is happening now would have been absolutely unheard of in years past with this company. Will it be their demise? After their investment in ChartNet, they refuse to concede that it is not only costing them good MTs, but I would think hurting the company financially as well. Is this the route a company of this size tries to take before they end up having to sell out to one of the monsters, and then everything is lost? I fear for my future here.

Now wondering with the new name change to SpeechMotion - what other changes are looming?????
