Have you ever been told this and if so------ - MTgotjob

Posted: Apr 09, 2010

what would you do about it.  My TL repeatedly tells us to get off the system when the work volume is low because we are taking food out of other MTs mouths because they cannot feed their families or pay their bills because they need to get at least 20,000 lines per pay, but they cannot do that if we stay on the system, and we need to have compassion for them and get off the system so the ones who need it the most can pay their bills.   Even if our line count is not met, they need it more than us and we should have compassion.  Then, she sometimes tells us to get on at 2 pm when the work is available, but by that time the work is gone and she will say, but you got on early and have enough lines.

Have anyone else heard of such a thing?  I am not kidding either!!!!!

So..... it's okay for YOU to lose money and not have enough to feed your family? - Horse Hockey

Are the other MT's ILPs or are they American MTs? It's irrelevant, I suppose.

Either way that TL should never be in a position like that because she has no class and is about the most unprofessional person I have heard of in a long time. Are they telling you to get off the system during your regular shift hours? If so, I'd pretend I didn't see that message and keep on working. I also would NEVER sign on either before or after my shift to help them out. Finally, I'd be doing everything I could to find a new place of employment.

What a load of garbage.

She tricked us off the system - MTgotjob

and told us to sign on at 1 pm when the work would be available, and when 1 pm came around, she said you made enough lines earlier today, stay off the system. I am not kidding. This happened for real!!!!!!!

Are you IC or employee? - Just one question

[ In Reply To ..]
If you are IC and the other MTs are employees, this is the usual. Otherwise, if you are employee I would find another job - or 2 if necessary.
No, employee status - MTgotjob

This above poster is correct, standard protocol - BTDT

I supervised an in-house MT department and we had an overflow MTSO, as well as part-time employees.

When work was slow, ALL work was first and foremost for the FTEs and then PTEs. If there was enough work, the overflow account/MTSO had work.

When work started to slow, the first place we removed work from was the overflow/MTSO, then PTEs were called off. FTEs rely on that job for their primary source of income, which is entirely fair as that is what they signed on to be...Full-time employees and all that that entails.

PTEs had PTO benefits they could use during slow times. I have no clue what the overflow/MTSO MTs had on their end.

It's not playing favorites or anything remotely close. It's just FTEs are the bread-and-butter of a hospital and are always taken care of first.
But it doesn't sound like OP is an overflow MT. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Or at least it doesn't sound like she was aware she was when she took on the job. If I applied somewhere for a full-time employee and was not told it was overflow, I would expect full-time work if the work is there. I would not expect to be told not to work if others were making 20,000 lines ppp. It seems like if she was not informed that she was overflow (which sounds like per diem), she would have a case for unemployment if she quit.
I fully agree, hence my reply - BTDT
[ In Reply To ..]
It sounds like her MTSO was NOT forthcoming with her at all about their status with the account (and perhaps disingenuous to the other MTs on the account), and that's simply infuriating. If an MT knows going into a position it's only overflow, we can choose to accept it and plan around it; however, if we're led by the MTSO to believe it's "their" account, we plan accordingly and assume we get our 20,000 lines or more per pay period.

That is why I reiterated my belief that MTSOs who do this do such a disservice to MTs. When will some of them ever learn a little honesty would go a long ways with us?

My heart breaks for her, it really does, because I've been on both ends of the spectrum; being shorted lines because I was an MT on an overflow-only account and also had to bear the burden of calling off the overflow MTs when there simply wasn't enough work.

It's not a good situation at all. I hope she's able to find something more reliable.

OP - In case you misconstrued my posts, I'm in YOUR corner. DEFINITELY.

Are you full-time status? Is this your primary account? - nm

Everyone should have that opportunity of getting "20,000" lines per payperiod! - Sunshine State MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Especially since you are an "employee."

Now, if I was trying to pick up some extra lines on another shift besides my own and it was slow, I wouldn't want to jump on for that long.

If I'm working my shift and work is there I would probably have to ignore those requests because those other families are not more important that my own family, we all should be equal.

By the way, it's been a long, long time since I've reached 20,000 lines in a payperiod because of lack of work, jumping from acount to account.

Hang in there MTgotJob.

In a perfect world, I agree... - BTDT

However, as I posted earlier, having been the lead MT at a hospital, it's a difficult but necessary call. It's "pecking order," for lack of a better term, in which FTEs get first shot at that 20,000 line; PTEs are next in line; and sadly, overflow/MTSO staff are on the low end of the totem pole.

I never enjoyed calling ANYONE off, whether they were FTE, PTE or overflow/MTSO. I knew they weren't working for fun and they needed to pay their bills, too. This is why I get frustrated reading this board with some MTSOs that might not be completely honest with their MTs about whether an account is their own personal account or simply an overflow account. There is no consistency or reliability with an overflow account, and those MTs will always get the "leftovers" that FTE and PTE couldn't get to. It sucks, but at least if an MTSO is HONEST about their status with the account, the MT can prepare for the low times and have something more reliable going on.

I did overflow for 1 company notorious for having primarily overflow acounts on these boards and it was chaos. Tons of work for a few minutes then all disappearing because the FTEs/PTEs needed the work.

All MTs trying to make a buck nowadays have my sympathy.

I'll betcha not EVERYONE on your team is getting that - message. Sounds like theyve got some favorites....

[ In Reply To ..]
that they want to make sure get their 20,000 lines. (That's TWICE what I get, BTW!). I've heard a lot of B.S. before, but this one sure takes the cake.

Please name the company so we can avoid it! - nm
