Doc dictates "mag oxide". Do I expand? - traci

Posted: May 13, 2010

mag oxide

Expanding mag oxide, it all depends - sm

The best source to an answer for this question would be your company or the client.

Some clients want slang like "mag oxide" and "tox screen" expanded, but other clients are strictly verbatim so you need to leave it unexpanded if that's the way it was dictated.

Personally, I usually tend expand things like "mag oxide." The only time I will not expand it and leave the slang as dictated is if the client has specifically requested it or if the client is strictly verbatim.

We do not use slang or abbreviations for medications. Check - with you employer. NM

I got a style error minor deduction for this, because it could also refer to "benign prostatic hyperplasia."  I was actually aware of this terminology controversy in the medical community in terms of what the actual meaning is, but I've never once had "benign prostatic hyperplasia" dictated in over 18 years of MT, regardless (has anyone else?). However, I should somehow intuit that Nuance wants it done this way (though I've been expanding it for over 2 years now with never a corre ...

exactly the same on every report and you have put his ROS and PE in your abbreviation expander, but sometimes he will dictate something out of order.  For example, the dictator still says the same exact things he always says, but sometimes instead of saying "EXTREMTIES:  No clubbing, cyanosis or edema."  He says, "EXTREMITIES:  No edema, clubbing or cyanosis."  Do you go back and change it or do you leave it since he is saying the same thing?  And if you don ...
