Moving to no mans land aka paradise.. Internet options suggestions needed! - SweetlyExiledFromSuburbia

Posted: Oct 21, 2010

I am only able to find a privately owned local phone company in this small town to offer Internet, through the phone, requires a landline (which I really did not need). Pricing: $100.  For 750 min long distance, call waiting, caller ID, DSL - 3MB.  VERY expensive just for internet and phone line!

Insane...ALL calls ANYWHERE except within just two small communities within 5 miles of our new house are long distance!  So, we will be using our cell phones for all calls.

There are no other companies that service our address.  I tried AT&T, Consolidated Com, Home-Tel, Charter, Comcast, Verizon.

Does anyone know of satellite companies that would offer service in rural areas?

I'm in the same boat. - sm

I've heard that Wild Blue works, or Charter...

But if you have cell service, what I would look into is the mobile broadband. I have Verizon cell service, and they have a mobile broadband 'card' that you can stick in your laptop (or desktop) and have service from anywhere you have cell service. I don't know all the in's and out's as so far I am still with my local phone company.

I have Hughes - Oracle

I loathe it. I pay $75/month for mediocre service at best that is degraded with the wind. There are limits on how much you can download between the hours of 7 a.m. and 2 a.m., so I dare not watch much more than 10 minutes of video anywhere at all (forget using your Netflix watch-now things). Fortunately, my work does not apparently count as a download, but it does take it a while to do whatever it is doing. Also, some companies will not accept satellite internet; not exactly sure why because I've not found one yet that it didn't work with.

In disgust after three years I tried to get any of the cell companies and use the plug-in internet, but unfortunately the cell reception is not sufficient to sustain the internet. Admittedly, my general cell service is not great to begin with, but I could hear the guffaws in the background when I called both AT&T and Verizon to inquire.

working over satellite - satellite savy

I had this problem with a satellite. If you are trying to type in a hospital system, you realize that each keystroke has to go to a satellite and bounce back into their system? The only way I could make it work was to type the document in word and then copy it into the hospital system's document. That was only a make do -- and I had to work for a while to get that to work. Another problem with working over satellite is security. While the original poster said she had never had a problem -- I had lots of problems and actually only one company I worked for accepted satellite. Be sure to check with the company you want to work with to see if they accept satellite -- most of them DO NOT.

I live in the same place. lol - nn

I am with a local wireless company who services this area and surrounding rural areas where I live. Thank goodness I have them because there is no DSL or Cable available here, except for satellite and I'd rather have dial up if i had to use satellite. Satellite is terrible.

Info Needed On Using Aircard For Internet Access To Work
Nov 21, 2009

If anyone uses an aircard to connect to the Internet to work daily, I have some questions... Most aircards I have seen have an access limit of up to 5 GB per month. I work online with a constant connection - as I finish one report and send it in, another one is downloaded, so I am probably downloading/uploading 25-40 times a day. Does anyone know if 5 GB is sufficient to do this for 8 hours a day?  If not, what is the cost of the overage. If anyone can suggest another alternativ ...

MT CO-OP. Am I In Fantasy Land? (sm)
Jan 30, 2014

Those of us who have many years experience know that very, very few doctors can be trusted to actually proof and correctly edit their reports.  Am I wrong in thinking that this will lead to a lot more malpractice suits which will cause malpractice insurance to dramatically rise?  We know that they want to replace us completely, but will the doctors learn to dictate the first name and address, email or fax of all the docs they wish to cc?  Of course not.  This necessitates off ...

Tips On How To Land A Job That Requires Experience? Have You Ever...
Jan 21, 2011

landed a job that required experience that you did not have? I am getting so very frustrated. I have a job now that covers maybe a week and a half of groceries every month. I am pretty new to this field, but due to a ridiculously long college program, I have studied for well over a year and I know my stuff. I test very well and I know what I am doing. All I want at this point is a job with work available, but all of the decent deals seem to require experience. I just need some way around this. I ...

Land Mines And Booby Traps
Nov 26, 2013

I am having one of THOSE days where there are tons of errors! The numbering on meds and diagnoses are wrong about 90% of the time! They tell us our PERCENT OF ACCURACY. What is the ACCURACY of VR????? I'll bet doctors would be horrified if they saw the stuff that we need to fix, except they are too busy to give a crap about us. Days like this I just feel like I am walking through a field packed with land mines, knowing I have a good chance of stepping on one! Does anyone else get sc ...

PT'ers Have No NJA Options

So, being a PT'er, I have to stick around the whole shift waiting for jobs?  There is no option for PT'ers as we do not accumulate paid time off.  This is pretty crummy and really unfair.  If I am expected to sit here for 8 hours doing nothing, I should get paid something for my time. ...

A New Company & Options For Spellchecker
Jun 29, 2010

I started with a new company and I did not have spellcheck, so I ordered it and it was quite expensive for the 2010 one. Now I found out that when I am in their program they are using their own. This has really ticked me off because I was TOLD that I needed to download a spellchecker and now I cannot send it back because I have downloaded it. Is there anyway that I can use this spellchecker instead of theirs? Any feedback will be appreciated. ;) ...

Health Insurance Options Available Now To Anyone
Jan 30, 2011

To those of you who desperately need insurance now, here is a great place to look for temporary insurance.  If you eventually find out that COBRA is not going to happen or LM jerks you around so long you miss the deadline, you can still qualify for Uninsurable Risk insurance depending on the State you live in.  Some of these plans may even be cheaper than COBRA, which is something you might want to look into.   It is definitely worth your time to check this out instead of just wa ...

Checking/unchecking Options

Opinions/options For Headset
Jun 27, 2015

My headset is worn out has wires showing (again).  I have taped it numerous times, but this last time the sound quality is not good.  I have been trying unsuccessfully to replace because I have really tiny ears and the ones advertised as "designed to fit all ears" usually end up falling out anyway and back they go for a refund.  I would just replace the cord if it didn't cost as much as a whole new set.  Tried the ones for children, but the sound quality is not good eno ...

Looking For Career Options, Exploring Coding

I walked into my community college and asked an advisor to give me a list of choices of careers I could study locally that would be quick. My sole purpose is to re-enter the working world as fast as possible. Medical Billing / Coding was one of the options. A friend reffered this site to me in response to an MT oportunity and, as if my prayers were answered, I noticed the Coding / Billing forum which has answered many questions. However, I have more, I always do. How d ...

Moving On.........

Moving Practice To EMR.
Dec 22, 2009

I received a call today from a doctor that I know.  His practice is switching over to EMR, and he wants someone to coordinate that transition.  New patients are easily entered into the system, but he has a temporary need to get the old records into the EMR system.  His office staff is too busy to add this big job to their workload, and I think he correctly determined that he needs someone who can read the old office records, understand them, and then extract the info that needs to ...
