Moving practice to EMR. - Go with the flow

Posted: Dec 22, 2009

I received a call today from a doctor that I know.  His practice is switching over to EMR, and he wants someone to coordinate that transition.  New patients are easily entered into the system, but he has a temporary need to get the old records into the EMR system.  His office staff is too busy to add this big job to their workload, and I think he correctly determined that he needs someone who can read the old office records, understand them, and then extract the info that needs to go into his new EMR system.  I'd like to do this, but I know nothing about EMR.  He's not sure what has to be done, but from our conversation, I believe he wants someone to come in and define the task and advise him on how to get it done.  As I was a business consultant in my life pre-MT, I'd like to take on this challenge.  But where to start? I'm thinking that this might open up other possibilities for me, and if he's willing to let me learn with his practice, I may be able to take that knowledge elsewhere in the job market.

Has anyone here been involved in a transition to EMR?  If so, is there advice you'd care to pass along to me?

It would seem to me the EMR people - installing it should be able to guide him.

What exactly does he need from you? Maybe your first contact should be the EMR developer.

I have to find out, that's for sure. - Go with the flow

I only had a phone conversation with this doctor. He recently merged with another practice, actually two other practices. He bought the other practices, and the EMR was already in place in the two other practices. I'm not sure what support he has from the EMR developer. When I meet with him after the holidays, I will definitely find out more. Thanks for pointing that out to me. (I know. It's obvious, but my brain is on Christmas overload right now!)

No info here, but best wishes. Sounds like a good opporunity. NM - MissIndigo

Inputting into EMR - LinK

[ In Reply To ..]
Right before I lost my MT job to EMR, I was in charge of putting data into the EMR system. There were two ways. I had to take all the paperwork from the original file and scan it into the printer, which in turn transferred it to a special place in the computer. Then I took each document piece by piece and using the computer, inputted it into the EMR system (it just basically took a couple keystrokes to do this). When new patients would come in, I would take the notes from the referring doctors and input all that information directly into the EMR system without having to scan it. It was very time-consuming, but now that they're done with that aspect, I'm out of a job. I worked for approximately 4-1/2 months in house inputting all the data. Now all the new patient data is put in by the doctors with help from the medical records department.
Thank you. That's very helpful. - Go with the flow

That's basically how I picture this process. I know it's a short-term sort opportunity for me. But something might come from it. I used to do transcription for this doc many years ago. (Picked up full sized cassette tapes and delivered hard copies from my typewriter!) I've long since lost my job in his office as a transcriptionist when he hired someone to do his work there in the office. But, I'm pleased that he's kept in touch with me, referred me to other practices, and has called me in on occasion to help when there was overflow. Who knows what will come of this little job.
Good Luck - LinK

It sounds like something good may definitely come of it. It's great that he's kept in touch and is still thinking about you. That doesn't happen a lot in business.

I am loving the company I am working for.   I am new to the field, and they have helped me so much to develop my skills.  BUT I am currently only transcribing one specialty(rehab).  I would like to get some practice in acute care, surgical reports, etc.  I've seen several practice CDs on the net and ebay, and just wondered if any of them are worth it.  I have zero experience in other specialties except for the little bit I did during training, and I just want t ...

Does Anyone Do Family Practice?
Apr 30, 2011

I have been doing transcription for about 7 years now, but almost all of that has been doing family practice work in SOAP note fashion.  When I first graduated I briefly did some work doing OP, H&P, discharges, et cetera.  I only did that for a short time and then started working at my current job. I have been with this small MTSO for 6 years doing family practice. I also did some letters and SOAP notes for peds endo for a while while doing the family practice. Anyway, over the las ...

I Was Taught And Practice Communication Is Key
Mar 11, 2014

Today is March 11 - that's 11 days since those of us who USE to work on a large account for OTI went POOF.  There has been little to NO communication since then.  Since March 4, I have applied for so many job postings, MT - nonMT - employee - IC it really doesn't matter I just need to make $$ and support my family!  It is very frustrating that you don't even get a canned answer "sorry, the positions are filled"  or "sorry you don't meet our specifications" ...

The Transcription Doctors - Regarding The Practice Of Penalizing Them
Jun 30, 2011

I would like to hear from current Transcription Doctors transcriptionists regarding the practice of penalizing them if they do not meet the required production rate, and also do they do the same if your QA percentage rate goes lower than what they require?  I have never heard of a company doing this before.  I don't see how they can keep people if this is true. ...

Nearly Every MTSO Engages In This Fraudulent Practice,
Oct 26, 2012

Most of us are not even aware of this, but the MTSOs have been doing it to all of us for years, and what they are stealing from us is huge.  Check this out. I will use just one report I did today to illustrate.  Template loaded for DS.  Report was half a minute long.  I am required to delete any unused headings.  All of the preloaded headings came to 200 characters.  Based on a 65-character line, that's 3.07 lines.  I had to delete all of those characters ...

FIRED FOR MOVING
Sep 02, 2010

I was recently fired from my MT position because I moved to a different state. I was a full-time employee. I was never informed of such a policy and had actually moved to this state a few years ago when working with the same company. This was apparently a new policy they had come up several months ago. The kicker is that I informed my supervisor of my move and even provided my address and nothing was said until I moved. ...

Moving On After SoftScript
Feb 07, 2013

I, too, was one of the "account specific victims" at SoftScript.  I was fired for a QA score of 90%.  This score was from 100% account specific errors (same error over and over in four different reports).  Rather than counting one formatting or specific error, they dinged me over and over, making my QA score 90.4%.   My question is, when applying for future jobs, if they call SS for a reference, will they tell them that my QA score was that low?  I have never in my 20 y ...
