Can anyone tell me in no uncertain terms, with absolute certainty - is crepitance a word? I cannot find it anywhere EXCEPT on sites like this where MTs are saying it is not a word. I always thought it was not a word but, of course, it keeps creeping up in reports. I even find it often in voice rec reports, over and over, which tells me that other MTs are not changing it - and this is what is prompting me to ask. Please help - thanks!
From the AHDI Book of Style, 3rd edition:
Crepitance, crepitation, crepitus: These terms are all synonymous. The adjectival form is crepitant (crepitants is not a word). Although crepitance is not found in dictionaries, its frequent usage has made it acceptable, though MTs should defer to facility preference, especially in a non-verbatim environment, for editing crepitance to crepitates.
This is the important part (and I've never had any feedback that I should have changed the dictated crepitance to something else): ...its frequent usage has made it acceptable...
