accuracy requirements of Nuance - Mariazkafka

A friend of mine works at Nuance (formerly worked at Transcend, but of course Nuance is gobbling up every MTSO) and said they require 99% accuracy. And rather than an average, they run the accuracy on every single report so that even though, for example, 5 reports may be 100% accurate, if one is 98%, you're screwed. Since when did the industry standard go from 98% to 99%? Plus apparently you are marked down for blanks no matter what. Whenever I have worked in a "real" healthcare organization (rather than an MTSO), the performance evaluation was always run on an average of documents and was fine as long as you were 98% and above. We were not penalized for blanks (unless of course excessive). Is this really what has become of MT? It seems like horrible management of staff, but of course, when have they cared about staff....Pretty horrible labor practices for which, of course, there is no recourse.

My question is: Are other MTSOs like this? I am currently working for a hospital, but have no idea how long that will last and have been working on a degree in healthcare informatics. If I lost my current job, it sounds like I'd be better off working for Walmart.

I work for Nuance and it is even higher than 99%. It is like 99.3% or higher along with of course meeting your 186 LPH. The blanks (depending on account that you are assigned to) work like this. On my account you are allowed 2 blanks in every report with nothing marked off at all. Any blanks over that, if QA can figure it out then you get marked off for it and they say it is not a VALID BLANK. You only don't get marked off if they also cannot figure out what they are saying. You are also marked off for every comma, not putting in articles, that in no way affect the meaning of the sentence. You cannot meet their expectations regardless of how hard you try. They will always find something to get you with

There is likely very little difference in what either big company charges for the work, it can only go down so much. That leaves quality as the differentiator. If you say that you can deliver great quality for the same price as the other guy, which would you choose? Granted, whether or not that quality is consistently attainable is another matter entirely but it looks good. Also, as the need for U.S. based transcriptionists decreases, it can possibly serve as a tool for winnowing out people. Better off is all relative. Right now I continue to do this so that I can stay home but am making an exit strategy. The low pay really is not worth it.

I've made lots of 100% accuracy scores, but I just saw that I made a 3.0 Critical error on a VR dictation at Nuance. It was where the doctor said a medication amt that sounded very much like another amount. I have been extremely careful with the medication amounts and the laboratory values, but made this mistake!! Very shortly our accuracy requirement will be 99.6%. Since this company cares nothing about accuracy, my conclusion is two-fold: 1) As they always have, they are going to use this as a marketing tool. 2) Anyone who falls below 99.6% will have their pay docked thus reducing the company's labor costs even further and will probably result in administrative bonuses. I started at Nuance about a month ago. I am a new MT, graduated from CareerStep with Honors at 94%. I've been transcribing for 2.5 weeks now. I downloaded FlashCount and love the ease of use. However, it gives a count which is slightly higher than when I manually do it in Word by dividing characters with spaces by 65. Is there a way to adjust the settings in FlashCount so it will give me the same count. I wonder if it is counting things like bold, etc. Or, is there another counting program that will count batches of files and do it accurately? It need not be freeware. I will pay for it. Years ...

I've been thinking about line count. To figure if Nuance line counts are correct, just go to the eScription's old reports and do a search for 1 day of your own reports. Then, just copy and pasted them in to word. Then do a line count. Wouldn't that work? ...
