Nuance or M*Modal? - 16TRANSRIBER

I've learned a lot from the M*Modal side, but now if you don't mind I would like to ask questions about Nuance.
1. Do they hire part-time, and if yes what might a schedule consist of?
2. What are the line requirements?
3. Weekend work required?
4. What shifts are offered, do they have 1st/2nd/3rd?
And, just about anything that is on your mind. TIA!

They do hire part-time and I understand you can work 20 to 30 hours. I can't imagine you would not have to work a Saturday or Sunday every week. Probably 2nd or 3rd shift. Lines would 186/hour. Don't count on bonuses or incentives at all. Plenty of posts on this forum about that. You might have a great TSM or one of the awful ones. It is a huge company so there is just no telling. I work on the Enterprise side and they are nice.

1. Yes. Part time is at least 20 hours a week. As far as I knew/know you can pick what your schedule looks like, just have to have 20 hours in for the week and 1 weekend day was a requirement before (not 100% sure if it is now).
2. Line requirements are 186 LPH. This includes traditional and/or speech. Does not matter.
3. Weekend work used to be required, not 100% sure if it is now. You'd have to ask. They used to always require some work on a weekend day, either Saturday or Sunday, your choice. Doesn't have to be an 8 hour shift, but has to be something.
4. Yes they have all shifts.
My opinion is this company does not treat its employees very well. With recent pay cuts and requiring to get on beyond your scheduled hours for out of work situations (which I think is totally unfair and illegal). I think there are some policies and rules in place that arent the same across the board or might be miscommunications between managers, etc., b/c they often change things. I have no issue with work flow and at rare times need my secondary. But I hear some people have low work volumes a lot. They are very hard on you if you are sick 1 day- have to make up everything basically. Unless you do happen to get a doctor note and complain. Seems they take advantage of their workers but not sure if this is just a manager problem or company-wide. I do have some good things to say about the company but the bad are more. I tend to barely make minimum wage now due to pay cuts and voice recognition. The VR is not that great. Would be faster to type the whole document. ok im done. :)

If you work over 30 hours, you are considered progressive part time and qualify for health insurance if you need it (I know nothing about the plan, I am covered through DH) but the other important thing to me is the PTO. The accrual is not as good as that for full time but it is something to think about. My paycheck always goes in on time and if you work between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m., there is a shift differential. The pay still stinks but that is really no different than any of the other big companies. While my supervisor is nice, the interaction is so limited it would not matter much either way to me.

The QA/QC (FIESA) nightmare that is Nuance is so horrifically worse than anything MModal does QA-wise.
The constant barrage of FIESA nastiness made me have daily panic attacks.
So, of the two evils, MModal is the better, IMHO.
I worked for 2 years at Nuance and now a little over a year at MModal. I also prefer Fluency over eScription. My paychecks are bigger at MModal.
I agree, same experience. MModal over Nuance - for same reasons.

Nuance's VR stinks compared to DocQScribe. I can only manage to produce 125 LPH whereas in M-Modal it was 185-250. I also hate their Enterprise system as I find it very time-consuming, having to navigate through several windows just for the demographics basically for free as you don't get paid for all that time and keystrokes. DocQScribe's system was very user-friendly, believe it or not, in comparison. And then there are the seven, count 'em, Seven different sites you need names and passwords for, all of which take time to load, especially that FIESA. I actually produce more with straight typing at Nuance than having to edit their VR junk. All of the three accounts I'm doing have dozens of petty, nit-picky client specifics that it makes my head spin. Their QA team is great at picking at Every-Little-Thing you don't do their way, and even if you don't have any Critical or Major or Minor errors (all of which add up), they throw in their 2-cents-worth and add a blank for you because They couldn't hear something you did. One QA person in particular is super snarky with her e-mail remarks, saying any editor could be picking these things up. Plus, since I can't make their 186 LPH, they get on my case for having to pay me minimum wage, which they say I'm not even earning - WHAT? With all the personal time I'm sacrificing having to review FIESA, plus their e-mails, plus their learning sessions, they're stealing money from ME! I hate this job and have been actively looking to get the heck out of transcription altogether, but where does an MT go with only 30 years of experience in this field? Maybe back to neurosurgery where I can make a buck.

I been where you are. About 3yrs ago the same thing happened to me. I read your story on the MModal board. Please consider taking the layoff, draw your unemployment and go back to school. Don't waste time with these companies. Your unemployment after 16yrs of making good money with the hospital you currently work for, will be much more than what you make for any of these companies.
If you're not interested in going back to school, then I would just start sending out resumes, but not to MT companies.

Exactly what I am going to do. I just like to do a lot of research on these companies before putting my keyboard on the shelf.
Thinking of doing something in the school system after drawing my unemployment.

M*Modal VR Sep 25, 2010I have another question. When one does a draft in VR, does MT get paid for all lines in the draft or would an MT get paid if it has to be edited.
