PLEASE PLEASE be very well informed and ask lots of questions from a knowledgeable source (State contact). Also be well informed if you are getting financial aid from the school. If you get a grant, make sure that you are eligible for the grant if a third party (state) is paying for your tuition. Be aware you can't get a loan if you have TAA benefits. How will you survive going to school and can't qualify for a loan or grant? These are the issues I ran into and ended up not taking TAA benefits. As a single income household, I was counting on that grant money to live on, but was uninformed it was for tuition only. I feel I was not well informed ahead of time and anticipated benefits that I was not eligible for in the end. It may be different for you, so just please be sure to cover all bases. Not everyone is knowledgeable about TAA, especially if you are still working. State employees in local departments were giving a lot of misinformation or guessing on things. They would say things like, well, we don't advise you to get a loan, but you can, when in actuality, you can't have a loan while getting TAA benefits.

and it is a lot of work. I am still working and getting partial UE. It took me a long time to get mine straightened out because most people that are in the TAA program are laid off, but in MModal's case, you don't have to be. The people I was dealing with were learning as we went along.

I am starting school this week. Yes, you do have to have a way to survive while going to school planned out so if TRA program benefits get cut (UE while going to school), you have to be able to financially survive. In my case, I have a husband who would take care of our bills if need be. Not sure why you would need a grant or loan if you are on TAA, as they pay for everything up to $15,000 a year for two years. My first semester is paid for already and I have my books for the classes already. I guess if you want to go further after the two years, you would be required to pay for it. You also have to go for something that is marketable in your area. They will go over all that with you.

You do have to be able to show you have resources to support yourself while in school, but be sure those resources do not come from a student loan. I am very glad I went to the TAA interview first, the above posters are correct, there are lots of rules and you do need to know exactly what you are doing. Be sure to get an interview with the TAA counselor the very first thing.

I am looking for a true IC position where I can work when I am available due to being handicapped. Out of curiosity I went to the Merrill Lynch site. I was looking around on my personal page; I had NO idea how much I had in there, and it showed me (I was surprised as I thought it was much less) But what do I know about it...never really kept up on it.....
