There's a big difference between a company shutting down, closing, closing U.S. operations (whatever you want to call it) and lay-offs. So far, it sounds like there ARE still people here, domestically, who haven't been laid off today.

That's not to say that they WON'T ever shut it down completely here, but I wouldn't call it "true"--at least at this point.

I'm almost 100% certain the press would've caught wind of it and there would be something about it online - a statement, a press release, etc. There aren't a lot of companies this size able to keep big news like that quiet, for very long. Especially right now.

I think anyone that knows something is much higher than an MT! Ive been here 18 years and I am clueless. As a matter of fact, I dont even believe they are really laying off, maybe its the same Indians who said they were closing on the 1st. Never know.

Well, Im part time, got no call, no email, and in my experience, they have gotten rid of people by quality so they dont have to deal with unemployment. Why would they change that now?

The simplest explanation, which is usually the true one, is that there is not enough work. Some people have to be laid off. The reason there is not enough work is that more is being sent to India. So though the company may not "close" its US offices, it is certainly downsizing them.

It makes sense to lay off the part timers,they probably do not make a lot of money and the UE would be less, supposedly, for a full-time MT. i do not know whey they did not do this a long time ago if it would mean more work for full timers. I have been out of work for almost 2 years and it keeps getting worse and worse. At first I could handle it, but not now and have filled for social security early because of it.

The original post here links to a thread that says, "Company closing in U.S." That's what the OP is wondering if it's true--not if there are people being laid off. People being laid off appears to be true.

I highly doubt that the only ones laid off today are ones that have specifically posted....whether that's only three, or more. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of M*M employees don't even visit this forum.

TWO job offers today. One is for my old hospital. I never thought it would happen again. I tried for 3 years to get my old hospital job back but never heard a peep. I am looking for a true IC position where I can work when I am available due to being handicapped. Out of curiosity I went to the Merrill Lynch site. I was looking around on my personal page; I had NO idea how much I had in there, and it showed me (I was surprised as I thought it was much less) But what do I know about it...never really kept up on it.....
