I did not know you had to be certified. Ah well. Hope something comes along and soon!!

health aides, and it may not be this way for all home health agencies. My Dad has been under the care of home health for a long time and the aide that bathes him told us that while she is a full time employee she is paid BY HOW MANY PATIENTS she sees per day. She also has to provide transportation and gas. The HH agency has had quite a few patients dismissed and she has not had a lot of work. In fact, one pay period she barely made enough to pay for her gas. We do live in a rural area and she has to travel a lot. I could not believe they did not pay by the hour....this includes the RNs also. The RNs are provided with a car/gas. I guess all healthcare jobs are going down the drain. :-(
The 2 HH aids I've met were hired by families - Anon.

to care for their elderly. Both lived with their charges, allowing them to remain in their own homes. It apparently can be confining, but one of those ladies had health problems of her own and it allowed her to live mostly quiet days in a pleasant comfortable environment, much as she might if she could afford to retire.
I expect you have your own home, and family for that matter, but your thread made me think of those people apparently considering dropping out and working at McDonalds. Combining some MT with no rent might even allow someone to sock some money away.
But not all HH aides are live-ins. Some are just (sm) - Yochana

8am to 5 pm jobs. They report to a Home Health agency in the am and get their schedules for the day. At 5 pm they report back in and then go home. The aide that bathes Dad also sits for patients during the day. It is a wonderful service. To those that may not know....the elderly qualify for xx amount of hours per year through their local Council on Aging Society. These hours can be used to have an aide come out and sit, bathe, take you to the doctor, or get your groceries. These hours are no charge.
If you get certified you have other job possibilities - tiredoftyping

You can also work in a hospital, some clinics and nursing homes. You are not confined to home health and yes, they do not pay great, but neither does being a MT these days. At least it would be consistent pay. I got certified in about 3 mos, but there are quicker programs and am now in my 2nd semester of nursing school and am glad I took that first step out.
From what I've heard they barely pay min wage - not good money there

My mother does it on and off as her health permits. Usually all she does is errands and drives them around, maybe cooks and cleans a little. There are different types - some do more medical tasks than others (bathing the patients, giving them injections, etc.). From what I've heard though, neither kind pays very well. And some of the things people expect her to do for them borders on the ridiculous - like washing out and saving all their garbage bags so they can reuse them, climbing on chairs and cleaning the tops of their kitchen cabinets, etc. Some elderly people consider if they have "help" they're going to lay awake dreaming up every task they can think of - the sad thing is my mom is in worse physical health than some of her clients and she really can't do much more than drive them around.
Around here, it is $2 over minimum - lovnlife

so not too bad. Better than a lot of other jobs pay.
Some places will pay for your certification - sm

Some places around where I live will pay for your training if you agree to stay for a year. Then you've got your certification, which you can take anywhere with you! But be prepared to use your people skills rather than your fingers!
Maybe you could try Craigslist for caregiver. nm - Sharon
I found the below on the Company Board, and wondered if this could be true?
... Because you've already put in your 40 hours. It is illegal to change your timesheets so they don't have to pay overtime. If they can't give you sufficient work and keep hiring people who take your work away from you, find a company that will give you enough work. Save the emails and send them to the department of labor. ...
I just found out that even though I am doing the minimal required lines (120) I am not earning minimum wage and so even if I increase my lines I won't make any more money....Until I am typing over 160 lines. I am so angry. Now they are pressuring me to get higher lines so I can get out of them paying minimum wage. Which is insulting in itself. I am going to try to do it and then be a benefited employee. But I am just angry that 120 lines doesn' ...

I have been in this (medical transcription) boat for a long time. I have enjoyed it and been able to support myself. The last few years I have been stubbornly trying to hang on and "ride the waves", but have finally gotten it through my thick head that this is NOT working for me anymore! I hate what this industry has become!
Anyway, was looking on the website of our local technical college, and I think I have found something I may be interested in. Going to lo ...

Just for the heck of it, I went to the resume section of this board, and noticed there were quite a few MTs with "entry-level or less than 5 year's experience" wanting to be compensated 10-15 cpl -- I really seriously doubt that is going to happen, especially for a "newer" MT. I would suggest that if you are really serious about finding a job in MT, then revise your expected compensation rate to something a bit more realistic. ...
I also posted this on the main board, but here goes.

In my quest to improve SOMETHING, I stumbled across "job burnout." I think it is my problem and wanted to share.
"A strong signal that the burnout victim is sliding into an existential crisis of meaninglessness is evident when the person's statements about work are cloaked with a "so what?" or "why bother?" attitude. This is particularly striking among burnout victims who were once very enthusiastic and dedicated."
There is some very good information and might be helpful. At ...
I put my resume up on one of the resume sites and it had an area where you could find out what the local and national average salary of whatever career you are in. I typed in Medical Transcriptionist and my area. Locally, I should be making $38,600, and on a national level I should be making $39,000! Are any of us anywhere near those numbers??? I sure as heck am not! My mouth would be totally shut if I was making that. I know there are people who definitely ma ...

I was looking for job openings at our local hospital and it's a long story but, found out that they have taken their transcription back in-house. Too many mistakes, not enough quality work, bad turn around times, et al. I am applying today, in person with them. I will offer to scrub their floors if that is what it takes to get back in to transcribing. I know folks who work there and they get a very fair wage, benefits and time off! ...

a nonMT job!! It is at WM. As much as I hated WM, if they give me a job and I can earn a straight, steady, hourly wage, I will be SO grateful. After being dumped on and treated like an idiot for 18+ years, I am almost out. I sure hope so. I need this so bad. ...
I saw this post while doing a little research into the field. The company is not named, but the location was given as Franklin Tennessee. Hmmm, I wonder what company that could be.

I always thought that companies paid for PTO based on an average of your last 3-6 months production.

that due to the problems of the Kapersky program they are not pushing the remaining few of us to install. I spoke with my CCM yesterday who told me that almost everyone was up on Kapersky at this time. However, there are still some of us that have not been contacted to install due to major problems it causes running MQ programs such as ASR.

retirement hut. It is on the inner island. If it makes you feel better there is no tsunami and/or hurricane season in this area of the South Pacific.
Bunion, I was not sure of your island preference, water, beach or inner island hut. There are plenty to choose from.
Shipwrecked, you may have NJA tonight (I have it almost everyday as well), but it won't be long before we say "Q who" and move into these huts in paradise.

I am really glad I found this board. I felt really alone. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who thinks MQ is making a profit off of the MTs. Being cut in pay for ASR was bad enough, but this first time right stuff is too much.
I am going back to school and I'm getting out of the MT business.

find an MT job? I'm currently with a horrible company (you guessed it, starts with M)...and would like to try elsewhere, but I am worried that another MTSO won't hire MTs in California anymore because of their strict employee laws (which are fair to the employee but I'm sure employers don't like)......
So, any CA MTs out there who found a job fairly easily recently? Thanks in advance for any replies. ...
that it's harder to pull these lines?
Don't get me wrong, my speed has also been impacted by some of the changes that we've seen in the industry over the last few years, but I just don't have the energy, so to speak, that I had when I was younger to crank out lines in a high-producer range. It's so tiring to try to maintain a steady frenzied pace for eight hours. I'm not a machine. Just don't know what to do. I need the money, but I just can& ...
