BEST JOBS FOR WORKING AT HOME: Proofreader Average Pay: $18/hour Education: Bachelor's degree Medical Transcriptionist Average Pay: $17/hour Education: Associate's degree or one-year certification program Show me a company I can make $17/hour at. And proofreader....we already do that and again, not for $18/hour.

Bachelor's degree to be a proofreader? What a - joke. nm

The medical coders I know started out at quite a bit more than that $18 per hour, and I don't suppose they even have to proofread.

No, you are not doing "proofreading," - not that kind.

[ In Reply To ..]
You are doing proofreading as MTs do it. That is not quite the same as the proofreading that professional proofreaders perform.

Yes, education and credentials are required for that. You could get that education and those credentials if you choose.

Suggest you Google proofreading as an occupation. A link to the Editorial Freelancers Association is below.

$17 an hour - It is possible

[ In Reply To ..]
If you got out of the house and didn't insist on working at home, you could make $17 an hour as an MT. It might be in QA or editing, but people do make that much on site and it is not production based. The proofreaders mentioned the ad are probably people who proofread books and newspapers before publication and that does require a bachelor's degree; more and more occupations do place that in their job descriptions, even secretarial and entry level jobs. The person with the college degree usually gets hired.

Excuse me but I don't "insist" on working from home. sm - mt2

I've been a MT for 25 years, the last 18 from home. My previous company, where I made well over $40,000/year lost their accounts to EMR. I then was hired by N. Most pay weeks, I make well over $1000 before taxes, etc. That's when there IS work to do and I'm not nitpicked by post audits. I also have a disabled husband who I couldn't leave at home all day even if I wanted to. I have 5 more years of this before I can retire and it can't come fast enough. I was only pointing out what the article said was average for MTs.

P.S. I forgot to add....sm - mt2

Where I live, the pay is low. I was going to apply for an office manager assistant until I saw the wage was $8.50/hour. There are not many opportunities to work outside the home here, so I plan on sticking it out as a MT.

Don't insist on working at home either...SM - Old Anon

I was forced to 4 years ago when my in-house hospital job paying hourly at $18.35 an hour, not on production (with fabulous benefits, I might add) was outsourced and the whole dang department closed. None of the other hospitals within computing distance were hiring anymore either and also in the process of outsourcing their whole departments. In-hospital opportunities are nonexistent where I live, so I am forced to work at home. I'd much rather be working in-house and making the big bucks and benefits instead of $10-12/hour on production; and from what I read on these boards, I'm luckier than most making that amount. I don't know what decade you're living in, but most of the large hospital systems have been outsourcing their work for the last, at least 10-15 years. We have no choice but to work at home, and for a lot less pay I might add.

This is my experience - Ex-MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I think I live in the same decade as you. My facility outsourced as well (I had been there 18 years and made more money than you did). I have never worked at home and never wanted to. There are not many onsite jobs left, that is true, I work in medical records now, where I do a lot of different things, including QA. I took a pay cut in the beginning but worked my way back up in about 2 years. Our local hospital (not where I work) still has a fully staffed MT department and gives people the option of working at home or on site, they recently hired another full-time MT. Some of the smaller offices still hire from time to time (employees, not ICs). Finding another job is really difficult but you don't have to do MT. The choice is yours to continue to work for $10 an hour. I doubt anyone is "forcing" you to do what you do.
Didn't mention, I was 63 at the time.SM - Old Anon

I was laid off and 66 now. There were no openings of any kind in other departments because they were laying off like crazy there too. I collected UE, worked with WorkForce (UE) on my resume, and put out approximately 50 resumes and looked into schooling too. In the end, I found an at home job in MT because I love MT. Nobody forced me to continue doing MT. I'm retired now but still do transcription part time as a supplement to SS and my hospital pension. My original point for posting my story was only to mention that there aren't a lot of in-house MT departments, like one poster mentioned, so not so easy to make the in-house big bucks anymore.

No, you are not being forced to - work at home.

[ In Reply To ..]
You are not being forced to work at home for nothing. You have choices. One of them is to find alternative employment site.

You do have marketable skills that will serve you in other areas.

When we suggest that, though, the objections begin ... can't stand people, won't work with blotches
, can't leave the pets/kids/husband/other alone, won't drive more than a mile, won't leave house, too high to leave house, can't smoke in workplace, can't drink in workplace, can't be told what to do, got no clothes, won't wear shoes, know that people judge them, have to homeschool kids, too old to learn, afraid to learn, no time to "go to" school, went to school for MT 30 years ago and will feel bad about throwing all that away, etc., etc., etc.

The only excuses we never hear are don't want to and too lazy to bother.

You forgot one more "objection" --- - ......

Sorry, I thought I had that covered with "can't stand people." I edited it to add "won't work with blotches."

People are people. Part of life is getting on with them. I don't like them any more than you do, I am sure, but I don't let them bother me. They are not certainly not worth poverty-level wages.

you missed - the point

I found the below on the Company Board, and wondered if this could be true? ... Because you've already put in your 40 hours. It is illegal to change your timesheets so they don't have to pay overtime. If they can't give you sufficient work and keep hiring people who take your work away from you, find a company that will give you enough work. I have been in this (medical transcription) boat for a long time.  I have enjoyed it and been able to support myself.  The last few years I have been stubbornly trying to hang on and "ride the waves", but have finally gotten it through my thick head that this is NOT working for me anymore!  I hate what this industry has become!  Anyway, was looking on the website of our local technical college, and I think I have found something I may be interested in.  Going to lo ...

Something That I Found Very Interesting
Nov 21, 2009

Just for the heck of it, I went to the resume section of this board, and noticed there were quite a few MTs with "entry-level or less than 5 year's experience" wanting to be compensated 10-15 cpl  -- I really seriously doubt that is going to happen, especially for a "newer" MT.  I would suggest that if you are really serious about finding a job in MT, then revise your expected compensation rate to something a bit more realistic. ...

In my quest to improve SOMETHING, I stumbled across "job burnout."  I think it is my problem and wanted to share. "A strong signal that the burnout victim is sliding into an existential crisis of meaninglessness is evident when the person's statements about work are cloaked with a "so what?" or "why bother?" attitude. This is particularly striking among burnout victims who were once very enthusiastic and dedicated." There is some very good information and might be helpful.  At ...
