Something that I found very interesting - anon

Posted: Nov 21, 2009

Just for the heck of it, I went to the resume section of this board, and noticed there were quite a few MTs with "entry-level or less than 5 year's experience" wanting to be compensated 10-15 cpl  -- I really seriously doubt that is going to happen, especially for a "newer" MT.  I would suggest that if you are really serious about finding a job in MT, then revise your expected compensation rate to something a bit more realistic.

Are you kidding me?! - anotheranon

you're kidding, right? 10-15 cpl??? On what planet??? Even the much more experienced MTs are not getting paid that kind of money! This line rate sounds like something a transcription school had told the students prior to them signing on the dotted line as a "potential" earning, so this is what they "expect" to be paid. HA! Just the same as when I went to Medical Assistant training...they told us to expect at LEAST 15.00 an hour, to start, with no experience. I had put that on my resume, foolishly, and actually receivd a phone call from a physician's office for an interview, because they "wanted to meet the person who thought they could earn this type of money straight out of school" as a MA. I was ridiculed to the point that I was in tears, and I immediately took that off my resume. I was sooo embarrassed! These people who use that type of line rate on their resumes need to have a good dose of reality dumped on them like I did, and change their expectations, or they will never find a job in this field.

Just sharing my experience and trying to get the newbies to come down to earth.

Shame on that person - gourdpainter

I feel sure that is an office where you would not have wanted to work anyway. Unbelievable that someone would actually say that to you!!! The schools ought to be tarred and feathered for telling their prospective students such ridiculous stuff. Of course if they told the truth they wouldn't likely get ANY students.

Thanks GP for your support. This happened back in 1985. The doctor's office I had received a call from for an "interview" was a cosmetic surgery office. It was not just one MA who had more or less "confronted" me, but more like four or five all at the same time. They made me feel like a bullied school girl at that time. They were really "angry" that I had "expected" that sort of pay back then. They told me that they never started out anyone at over 8.00 an hour, which back then was pretty good pay. They never actually even "interviewed" me for the position at all. They had just called me simply to meet the person who had the gall to put that sort of expectation on their resume. Even after I had explained to them that this was what the school had told us students to expect, they were relentless in their ridicule. I have never forgotten that incident and it thoroughly changed my ideas about wanting to be a medical assistant. I never pursued the career ever again. They may have felt "justified" in their ridicule and their anger, but I hope they truly know that their words and actions changed my life direction entirely. Even now, I do not put my earning expectations on my resume. I will barely even respond to be questioned about it by email or face to face any longer. I usually will respond with something like, "well, what do you offer for this position?" and leave it at that.

Again. Thank you for caring. You too, are appreciated by some on this board.

Who would put on their resume what kind of pay they expected for a job? I did not know that was something you would put on a resume in the first place.

I believe that when you post a resume online for MTStars, there is a section that asks "expected rate of compensation." Which, for newbies expecting 10-15 cpl and even up to five years experience is unrealistic. I am at 30 years and making 10 and working my tail off for it

That really burns me up! If the school - kiki

told you to expect that much to start (or probably EVER) they are flat out lying to you. If you pulled that number out of your head, good thing you came here first.

My daughter is attending M-TEC and her teacher tried to give her (and the other students) the same line of BS about starting pay, etc, neglecting to mention the pitfalls such as ASR and off-shoring. Well, good thing my daughter's mother is an MT. I had a little talk with the teacher and told her PLEASE do not raise your student's expectations so high, etc. She wasn't very appreciative of that and my daughter is now saying she is EXTRAORDINARILY nit-picky with her work.

Jan 08, 2013

I was looking for job openings at our local hospital and it's a long story but, found out that they have taken their transcription back in-house.  Too many mistakes, not enough quality work, bad turn around times, et al.  I am applying today, in person with them.  I will offer to scrub their floors if that is what it takes to get back in to transcribing.  I know folks who work there and they get a very fair wage, benefits and time off!  ...

I think it is very interesting how a company will make you jump through hoops to "prove" you are an independent contractor but still want you to use an employee based punch in/out system. You don't get it both ways, if I am an independent contractor, then I don't have to use your employee based punch system, especially when you want to charge for it but to keep track of my own hours is free. ...

It Will Be Interesting To See What Happens When
Jan 28, 2014

Been reading the business perspective of what will happen when (not if - when) minimum wage is increased, and 99% of companies who employ low income workers say that will be the day they lay off most of their employees, or have to close their doors altogether.  Not that I expect MModal to ever "close their doors", but that does leave open the other alternative for a huge layoff as the need to "supplement" employees who aren't earning minimum wage, or who don't meet their ridiculou ...

Isn't It Interesting That Newbies Are Getting
Jul 01, 2010

us oldies are getting below 98%, in some cases waaayy below, after years or decades of exemplary work, with raises, etc. How much more obvious can it get that they're downsizing the highest paid (and most experienced) MT/ME, to hire the newbies and get the tax breaks. Makes me SICK, so I resigned a couple weeks ago and feel absolutely in shock that I did it, finally, and trust in God for a better job. ...

I work in-house at a clinic.  When I'm reading over reports from the transcription service, I noticed there are no periods after "Mr.," "Dr.," and so forth.  The transcriptionists type them as Dr, Mr, Mrs, etc.  Is this yet another way to cheat the MTs out of keystrokes?  If so, that's pretty pathetic. ...

Aug 23, 2013

When we got the New Work Availiability Policy last week I replied and made a suggestion that they go back to the idea of a 12-hour shift within which to get your 8 hours.  I pointed out that it would eliminate the work tickets and all the other administration and mumbo jumbo that goes on trying to get everyone's work hours in.  People would be more likely to be able to get their 8 hours in if they had 12 hours to look for work. It would increase employee satisfaction being able to ...
