A community of 30,000 US Transcriptionist serving Medical Transcription Industry

I found this quite funny (in a sad way) - ME

Posted: Jun 21, 2011

I put my resume up on one of the resume sites and it had an area where you could find out what the local and national average salary of whatever career you are in.  I typed in Medical Transcriptionist and my area.  Locally, I should be making $38,600, and on a national level I should be making $39,000!  Are any of us anywhere near those numbers???  I sure as heck am not!  My mouth would be totally shut if I was making that.  I know there are people who definitely make more than that...but I would not be complaining if I made that amount a year.  I wonder if that is more based on people working AT hospitals or offices...not those working from home.  ???

Yes, I usually make that much - but...

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, I am still making somewhere between 35,000 to 40,000 per year.

BUT...

I am also working for 3 companies, working 7 days a week and at least 12 (usually more) hours a day, second and third shift.

I used to be able to make that much with just working part time. Of course, that was a number of years ago and before VR. But since the MTSOs have been dropping our line rates to third world wages, in some cases I'm not even making minimum wage. I'll be glad when the DOL finally catches up with them.

I am a small MTSO. I pay 9 cpl NOT third world wages, and people still cannot make what they used to with all the platforms and short notes typed in EMR programs compared to tapes and straight typing 20, 30, 40 pages and yes speed matters. The faster you can type the more you can make since we are paid by production. I have employed people for over 20 years and 90-100+ wpm MTs obviously make a lot more (hourly) than 70-80 wpm. Same amount of work is available to my subs, and some can produce 1000 lines a day, and others only 600-700, depending on typing speed and familiarity with the medical terminology.

ME - Not going to post my name

I made 46K last year. And before anyone accuses me of bragging, I am only posting this in answer to a person's question. I work at home for a major teaching hospital. In 1995 I made 90K, so you can see where the industry is headed.

Likewise, made much more in the late 90's. Now working more, making less, but so are a lot of other people in other fields. And would choose working from home ANY day.

Yes, I do - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I make that much per year working 40 hours a week from home. I do straight transcription, no VR.

I really must not know who to work for - Me

[ In Reply To ..]
I am not seeing that much at all. I guess you guys all have excellent companies to work for. I am still looking.

I am around there. - destinyisntfree

I am in that neighborhood, give or take a thousand depending on the day. I work one full time and one part time job, average 12 or so hours a day 4 days a week, and then 2 other days of 8-10.

I used to be close before VR came to fruition - mt

Now I don't make jack. I could make more in fast food. Luckily, I just got a new job doing straight typing. I'm so ready to start and make real money again. :)

Most of those job-outlook sites are pretty outdated... - or else theyre not including MTSO pay. (nm)

Yes, I make that, but you don't want to know the number of hours a day I have to put in to do so, 12-15, AND I have subs working for me. Things have really changed, but I would still prefer this to working in an office setting any day, no one to answer to and surrounded by my 4-legged friends....

I make that much and made 10,000 less than the year before, was in the 50s - once upon a time

[ In Reply To ..]
.

regarding above, I am working 8 hours a day if there is work and 5 days - a week, NO VR

[ In Reply To ..]
.

Nope, used to make more than 40k. Now less than - 30k

Certainly don't think I have gotten worse at my job?

Just had to share this.  An ad on the local radio inviting "everyone" to a seminar to become a "medical transcriptionist.  Earn more money working at home than in an office."  I laughed.  I would definitely have gone, but unfortunately it is at least 1-2 hours away on a working night.  How I wish it was closer.  I would have love to have gone and given them an earful.  I want to know where those jobs are because I'll go find one.  Alas, it is not mean ...

Just A Little Funny

I was looking at glassdoor, where you can see reviews of different companies.  I was looking to see if there were any reviews on M*Modal.  AND there are.  The majority are bad -- really bad.  What I find funny is that even Indian employees are complaining about them.  One of them wrote "Joining here is like you are committing a suicide".  So, how bad does a company have to be that even people in India think it is horrible? ...
