Seems Like It Takes Forever - Meh

Is it just me or does time seem to take a long time when working as an MT? It seems like I've worked about 7 hours when I've only worked 4 hours and have 4 more hours to go.

Everything about MT is making me physically, emotionally, financially, and spiritually bankrupt. I can hardly remember the days when I looked forward to each day.

I think it's the whole being chained to a desk for 8 hour "shifts" like sweat shop workers that makes it seem like that. When I first started the work at home thing a long time ago, I could get up, work a couple hours, take a long break, come back, finish up, and maybe even put in an hour or 2 if I woke up in the middle of the night. Now I count every minute waiting for the "whistle to blow." Horrible what this job has become.

Our company, about a year ago, forced us to start punching an electronic time clock. Have to stick to your shift, take 1/2 hour lunch and punch in/out for it, punch out if you are away from keys for more than 10 minutes, that sort of crap. If you work straight through and don't punch out for lunch, it automatically does that for you, and so you are docked 1/2 hour automatically, even though you didn't take a break, and it's all completely legal according to my state's Dept of Labor. Ethical? Perhaps not. But 100% legal.

My morale and subsequent line count reflect the mental burden this has become, and although I have no contact with any of the other MTs there, I can't help but wonder if they are going through the same thing, as we are constantly being told we have to work mandatory OT because TATs aren't getting met. Hmmm....why is that now?

Perhaps it's because we work on production, not hourly wages, and this new way of doing things is just asinine and not working out for anyone. This just isn't that type of work that is predictable in the way "pieces parts" assembly line production work is.

Since we are paid on production, I could never see the point of the time clock, and MM is absolutely rigid about sticking to it. And in what other profession does one have to clock out for breaks?

I'm so glad I finally got out of there.

in a hospital setting, there were others around to talk to, to help listen to the garbled reports, to laugh and gripe with, and now it's just us at a keyboard at home alone with no real contact with other MTs. I constantly watch the clock too, and I'm only part-time.

The cushion on my office chair became hard & uncomfortable, so I decided to get one of those Forever Comfy cushions. Worked great.... for about 2 months. Now it's all flattened out and lumpy and is really uncomfortable. I spend all day moving it, adjusting it, trying to get comfortable. I don't want to buy another office chair, but I'd like a cushion the same size as the Forever Comfy (18 x 13 1/2) that I can stick inside the cover or just replace altogether ...

MT of the year/month or whatever. I figure if I show up for work every day, do everything I have to do without complaining, sometimes extra when asked, always make 99% or better on QA, then I should be considered for MT of the year, yet somehow imagine my name never even comes up when they are considering. What do you think someone has to do extra to even be considered, much less win? ...

I also work for another company who has started docking pay for another issue and just wonder what other companies out there are doing this as I am ready to find a new company to work for. First, I had to have an audit, which was done on 10/01 and my score was 99.89, so she went ahead with the paper work. Rarely are they taking 1/2 the time of straight typing. The majority are taking at least as long as it would to straight type and some more time. This is all due to the number of corrections and punctation and formatting I have to do! ...
