Epic - realistic and honest insight - Anne
Posted: May 02, 2012
Can anyone give me realistic and honest insight as to what effects the Epic electronic record has on employees in the HIM department including transcriptionists, coders, technicians, etc. as well as other employees at doctors' offices. I am contemplating an inside Epic position transferring data from two different electronic record systems into the Epic system. Will this temp position likely be gone after a year or so? I know that a lot of healthcare facilities are moving toward Epic. Epic is a great system and I can see why. Should a former MT just jump ship from healthcare altogether and take a chance on another completely different from this or is this position something that will be an asset? Also, are RN's doing much of the HIM data entry anyway? Sincere replies only. All replies appreciated.
I've seen several ads for MTs that I suspected were - just what you describe. I didnt apply. (nm)

of this field, do it. That's my 2 cents. Have they offered you the job?

Anne, I use Epic where I work as an MT. Some of the information can be templated and there are many shortcuts that the providers use, but transcriptionists are still needed. We transcribe partial reports and complete reports based on the provider's preference, many of them are lengthy. We have VR but a lot of the providers don't like it and won't use it. Our work load has lessened but our department still has plenty to do. I personally like Epic Care because there is no need to enter demongraphics, you just transcribe. Our MTs were transferring data in the beginning but none of us have time for that any more because transcription has been so busy. Whether your temp job goes away will depend on the number of patient records you are working with, our data base is huge. Nurses are doing some data entry, but many nurses want hands on patient care, not data entry. Generally the work gets delegated to MTs or HIM employees. I can't address the coding side of Epic except to say that I have a coding background and chose to stay in transcription, but I don't see coders going anywhere. Personally, I wouldn't jump ship. Your temp job could possibly lead to other things. I know many people will advise you to get out while you can but I guess that would depend on your age and how many years you plan to work. I'm getting close to being able to retire so I'm hanging in there. I have a great employer and my situation and experience seem to be different from most of the people on this board. Sorry to be so long winded, but that's my experience with Epic so far.

I guess it partly depends on whether you want/need to jump ship.
If it's a temp position it will probably be gone in a year, but if it's a large medical system they will likely need to retain people to work with it afterwards. Try going to a job search website and typing in Epic. You will get a ton of hits. Having hands-on experience with Epic, especially if you can get a certification once you have been working in it, is gold and may be a great transitioning step for you, if you want a transition.
Where's the benefit in going broke at bottom-level clerical? - You need to train for something that will pay. NM

Epic needs trainers and consultants. Learning the system and working at a clerical level would be the first step if a person wanted to advance. Very few people start at the top of the pay scale in any job, even with training.

What Happened To An Honest Day’s Work For An Honest Day’s Pay Jul 29, 2010It is amazing that more people are not committing suicide. I guess that goes to the underlying optimism that human beings are inherently born with. We always think there is good in all people and that we will be protected from evil.
But, what happened to an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay? Every day there are posts about people working hard for their paltry wages, only to be paid late or not paid at all. We cannot even apply for a job ...

Want To Change Companies And Need Insight May 14, 2014Been working at a particular company for a few years now and I am just sick of being verbally abused, unappreciated and underpaid. I was considering applying somewhere like Nuance, but I don't have contacts in other companies to give me a clear idea of what they're like. Let's Be Honest . . .. Jun 24, 2013. . . some of this Nuance work is just god-awful; and yet they wonder why it's out of TAT even when they offer extra hours? Really?
The quality of this dictation is so bad that no one wants to do it . . . at least not willingly. One dictator even whispers his dictation no one will suspect that he hasn't yet mastered English. I suppose if we cannot hear him then the MT can be blamed. UGH. Horrible.I think anything would be better than this job, e ...

Honest Opinion May 15, 2015I really want opinions about this. There is a dictator where I am constantly having to put a QA note that says to "copy and paste from previous report, or copy and paste from such and such". I think it takes away from my editing , especially if I have to go in and do several of them back to back during a shift. My QC says it only takes a few seconds, but I wanted to know if we get paid for leaving these QA notes when the doctor asks for one.
Do you think I am wrong to wa ...
