HONEST ANSWERS PLEASE!!!!! - New to VR

Posted: Jan 07, 2010

I am new to VR and was wondering something.....How many of you actually go through and listen to the whole report and how many of you fix the errors you see, sign it off and go on?  I am just looking at the high lines counts that you guys are getting per hour and am wondering if some of you are not listening to the whole report as that may take more time?  I know that doesn't sound good, but just looking for honest answers here.

Also, advice on how to get such high line counts would also be appreciated!!!

You must listen to the whole report - Tina

You cannot skimp over VR reports. The system always puts words in or leaves words out or uses one word over the correct word the dictator actually said. I have never had a report that wasn't full of that stuff.

If you really get lucky, you can get some great dictators. When I am fortunate enough to get a great one, I can get line counts in the 400s. Usually, though, my average line counts are about 250 lph because I have some real challenging folks to listen to at times. If you luck into a really nice account with good dictators, count your lucky stars because then you can get those nice high line counts after you get used to the dictators and the account specs. It is possible.

Another question: When youre listening along and you - see msg

see the wrong word as you're listening, unless it's a blatant error, don't you tend to hear the same word you're reading? QA is always telling me not to type in the comments section that I THINK I hear, for that very reason. Otherwise, they start hearing what I was hearing. So isn't that kind of a big problem for people who do VR?

Very good question, SeeMsg. For myself, I have - MissIndigo

[ In Reply To ..]
noticed a problem that way here and there, but not so much, although I can't say why. Perhaps because all of editing is about looking for errors to correct? The assumption they'll be there? I do try to keep my attention on the meaning of what's being said, which would tend to turn up a lot of those errors.

Thinking back, though, for me that problem was much bigger in my first year or two and had diminished considerably with experience well before I started editing. It would be interesting to see answers from others.

It is not a problem if you pay close enough attention - VRing

You are not only looking at words but also reading to see that it make sense as you go along. I see words that are not errors jumping out at me, such as look when the word is actually looked. I think doing VR you absolutely have to pay more attention than just regular transcription. I read every single word but I also listen to the sentence. I have no idea how a person would only "look" for errors and not hear what is being said. Sometimes periods at the end of sentences not there. If not comprehending what you are doing, better find another job (well at my place anyway).

I am not a COMPANY person by any means, but I've found that you are much better off listening to each and every word doing ASR work. THEY DO CHECK and you don't want to be on the receiving end of any points or negative remarks - believe me, I've been there.

As far as increasing your line count, I finally figured out that I can pretty much keep up with the listening/reading at a higher speed - duh! to me. If I get stuck, I just slow it down for that instance. Good luck.

I listen to every little word that is said, always - VR here

Just this morning have been changing things like check to checked, say to saying if that is what the person is saying. You cannot just let work flow through. My job would certainly not allow.

Just a word here about my VR this morning - VRing

I had a phone call from my coworker in animal rescuing and talked for probably 5 plus minutes, maybe 10 and even at that my count for the hour at 4 cents per line was $23 and some change. It can be done, very easy to make good but you definitely listen to everything.

Agree with everyone: I Listen to every word. Not doing so - would get one canned pronto.

[ In Reply To ..]
at my company would get me canned pronto--not sure whether physician complaint or routine QA check would cook my goose first, although I'm guessing one of the doctors having a real hissie over something I sent off to a patient's chart. And as I've pointed out a number of times, I still do make good line counts.

Regarding how, how about doing research on this board initially? Many hours of discussion are here spread over dozens of threads. Of course, you skip over input from people not doing well and focus on the people who are. I'd be happy to try to answer any questions you still had if you'd like.

Yes, I have 2 jobs and my FT job is 100% VR. You absolutely must listen to the whole thing. We are QA'd to death. After being an MT for 25 years, I find that VR requires much more concentration than transcribing. You can not take your eyes of the screen for a second. I've worked on 3 different platforms with VR. The platform you have makes a difference! Also, some speech accounts are more mature than others. The longer the acct has been VR, the more time they've had to work out bugs. Be sure to use your short-cut keys. The mouse is not our friend! Once you get comfortable with your account, try speeding up the audio. At my FT job, they offer a one-on-one session to help with productivity. If your company offers that, it sure doesn't hurt to take them up on it.

The mouse is very much my friend and I use it all the time, never use the other keys. I also can look away from the computer every once in awhile, that is not a problem with me. I always have the audio at its fastest with VR or with straight transcription. It took about 2 days of on the job teaching and no updated sessions since then.

I am new to VR. I am using ExSpeech. How long does it take to get up to speed. This account requires much editing. I can't get above 250 lph. I will starve at this rate. Lucky for me, my company has a transition pay :) Honest answers please.
I do not have any information on your particular - VRing

platform. How long have you been working on it now? I use a different one and trained about 2 days and probably took about a couple of weeks, at the most, to get up to speed. One thing is I was trained inhouse and knew the acct but still my platform is really good. Have no clues about others.

What Happened To An Honest Day’s Work For An Honest Day’s Pay
Jul 29, 2010

It is amazing that more people are not committing suicide.  I guess that goes to the underlying optimism that human beings are inherently born with.   We always think there is good in all people and that we will be protected from evil.   But, what happened to an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay?  Every day there are posts about people working hard for their paltry wages, only to be paid late or not paid at all.  We cannot even apply for a job ...

To those with questions regarding working for Precyse I can answer you.  Don't do it.  We were just informed that we now MUST make at least 260 LPH (previously was 240) OR ELSE.  That's for ASR.  The straight typing minimum line rate has gone up also---and those are few and far between plus usually only the very worst reports come in as regular transcription.  The sound quality is terrible.  A lot of the jobs go to India.  You only get credited f ...

I do not work for any service currently, but it seems that the general complaint I hear on this site is about the pay.
