Anyone have any helpful hints/suggestions for how to go faster - in VR

Posted: Jul 16, 2013

Since the report is already typed and we are just editing I know I should be going faster than I am.  Sometimes I spend as much time as I do if it was regular typing, but I know I should be going faster.

Do people go faster on VR and if so do you have any suggestions that will help.

Thanks,

This is a - question

that has been around since VR started. If you normally type fast, you will always be able to type faster than edit the garbage the VR spits out. If you are a slower typist, then I guess you can maybe do it faster. Here's how the lie went. VR was going to make our lives wonderful. Our production would double, thus a paycut to half the typing rate. Okay, I type a little over 200 lph or a little more. Now with using VR for several years, I can edit about 200 lph or a little more. This is with shortcuts, macros, focusing and anything else they tell you to do. Now, MModal went from telling us we can double our production to bragging that the average VR speed is about 180 lph, and this is supposed to be great. Hmmm..things have changed. Paycut, double my lines went to the same as typing and they are bragging that is great.

Use your expander aggressively - s/m

I used to work for Transcend and I even taught classes on using Shorthand to speed up editing. My classes were platform-specific, but many of the tricks I developed could be adapted for use in other platforms. One trick I used was to "remap" my most-used shortcuts to the home keys on the keyboard; for instance, I created a shortcut that turned CTRL+J into the same thing as CTRL+right arrow. You'd be amazed how much speed you can pick up just by not having to move your hands away from the home keys. It takes some time and effort to develop a system, but once you do, you can and will get faster. Best of luck!

Use expander 4 automatic backspace 10 characters - JM

If your expander can do it, program it to delete 10 spaces at a time. I use a "JJ" to delete 10 characters left. In Instant Text you have to use the format function to put it in as a special function, (Control Backspace), (Control Backspace) - as many characters as you want it to erase. It helps tremendously.

Helpful Hints?
Mar 12, 2010

I got an email today with a bunch of FYI... do it this way, type it that way.  I suppose it will be helpful at some point, but I just got feedback... back and for the first time ever I was corrected to type H and P instead of H&P.  How do you type it, does anyone know how it is supposed to be?  I think H and P looks stupid. Also, doc dictated vital signs:  see nursing notes and then went back later and changed it to unremarkable.  The QA changed it back to see nursi ...

Helpful Quick 7.1 Hints
Oct 08, 2012

A lot (if not most) of the commands are the same in 7.1 that you're used to.  The training encompassed everything, not just new information.  There are just a few additions, is all.  You still upload the same, get the QA note the same, back to ADT the same, etc. ...

Helpful Hints For MTs Leaving The MT Industry
Aug 01, 2012

As someone who worked as a professional full-time MT for 31 years (most of those years at home), I've learned the ropes the hard way when transitioning over to the "public workplace."  I'm here to offer encouragement to others who need to find another career in order to make a decent living.  I do still work 15-20 hours at home as an MT online, but I work a full time job in a completely different sector during the day.  I finally have the job of my dreams, and I absolute ...

Regarding Helpful Suggestions From People Who Are Doing Well
Dec 02, 2011

Someone else has already suggested what I was going to say, going over your resume and making some changes. Another good idea is to get together with some MTs who are successful. Just as negativism rubs off, so does success. I've learned quite a bit from my friends who were successful years before I was. They've been at it a long time and are still going strong. Just as in any career, we each have our ups and downs, but we do well overall. Part of the reason why is, we keep learning f ...

Faster! Faster! No Mouse Clicks Allowed!
Mar 17, 2013

Right when you think MM (Merciless Master) couldn't possibly come up with a new way to add stress to your job, they make you install a software that counts your mouse clicks! My friends who still work in hospitals wouldn't believe this! Okay, I've seen everything in this business now. ...

If you think you hear P it could be B, and vice versa.  If you think you hear T, it could be D, and vice versa.  If you think you hear K, it could be G, and vice versa.  These sounds come from the same location in the mouth, same tongue placement, etc. but the difference is one set is voiced and one is voiceless. Okay, Lets Try Tips/hints Again
Apr 01, 2014

The next tip/hint I have for everyone is the comma, semicolon, and colon. First of all, UNLESS YOUR DICTATOR IS VERBATIM, ignore their punctuation. Most doctors I have experience with wouldnât know proper punctuation if it bit them in the behind. Just because they say âcommaâ doesnât mean their correct. I wonât say much about the comma, because I think we all pretty much know how to use that. However, the semicolon stumps some people, especially doctors. A semicolon ...

Hints For Brand Names Vs Generic Drugs

Do You Find It Faster To Use The Mouse
Dec 04, 2011

I know the "push" is to use the shortcuts but it takes me twice as long to remove my hands from the keyboard to reach the arrow keys and alt+shift or ctrl+shift than to just click where I want to go with the mouse. I was just wondering if it's worth it to retrain myself to use those particular shortcuts. I tried creating my own but they will not work in our system.  The other ones we have are fine but the cursor ones stink. ...

Our Work Is Going Off Shore Faster Than You Can Imagine
Feb 25, 2010

Our work is going off shore faster than you can imagine.  According to posts, I see we are wondering about the lack of work, in many cases for over a year.  We are behind in getting info on this.  Google off-shore transcription or any words that will get you the info.  The information is plentiful.  Many articles state the hospitals are unaware that work is going off shore.  They just dictate, assume it goes to a central system in the states and we sit behind our desks and have so much wor ...

M-Modal - Anyone Found A Way To Make It Faster?
Jun 25, 2010

Wondering if anyone has been able to find a way to make M-Modal go faster or if it is just hopeless.  The software can be extremely slow and bogs down a lot, especially if you increase the speed or choose to optimize the playback to skip over blank spots (dictator not talking) in the dictation.  I increased the RAM on my computer with what my employer provided when we first switched over to the software, but it is still so much slower than our previous software.  Has any ...

Do You Think You Can Talk Any Faster? I Actually Understood A Word!
Nov 14, 2014

Doc was saying the silver alginate was doing a good job, so he will continue the patient on "surovnick."  "Surovnick?"  I spent approximately 20 minutes looking for all brand names of silver alginate, googling every possible spelling of the word.  THEN realized he was actually saying - - silver alginate really fast.   Lets see, how many lines could I have typed in that 20 minutes?  Even after I realized what he had said, it still sounded like surovnick to me! ...

Tricks To Faster Speech Recognition Editing?
Aug 14, 2011

I have been straight transcribing for many moons. Then got into doing QA and a lot of the reports I get are straight editing of speech recognition rather than doing QA. My production stinks when I do straight editing and have no idea how those of you that edit speech recognition all day make a living. Kudos to YOU! I am one of the probably few QA who really appreciates you MT's who make our jobs easier and do AMAZING jobs transcribing what I can't even QA. Thank you for your hard work ...

Just Something I Want To Pass Along That Could Be Helpful
Sep 24, 2012

I, I think like a lot of the MTs on here are getting fed up with Express Scribe and the fact that you have to go to the Pro Version and downgrade to the free.  Stupidly on Thursday, I removed my copy of ES to install the version that the company I was going to work for uses.  Well, now, I cannot even configure the footpedal unless I purchase the product or one of their footpedals (my footpedal is an IN-USB-1 which has worked on Express Scribe in the past), but now, it is not even on th ...
