Just lost job 2/2/2012 after ten year long career - any helpful hints - al702

Posted: Feb 13, 2012

Well after ten years as radiology transcriptionist I lost my job to new technology.  Any helpful hints on finding a new job, what the market is for radiology transcriptiionists, is there any hope for me?

sorry - experiencedmt

I'm hanging on by a thread after 16 years it seems like. Wish I could say I felt better about it, but I don't. I have applied for a second job with too many companies to count to supplement my first one. Good luck! I wish you the best.

I don't know anything about them except what I've read here, some good, some not so good, but I think Keystrokes has radiology, think have seen an ad recently for a couple of companies for radiology.

and wanted to say also - sorry for your loss

hope you find something soon!

I am not sure if this makes you feel any better, but you are not alone. I too was laid off due to lack of work and technology. I have had a hard time finding work with 30 years experience. Of course I will not settle for anything, meaning no low pay VR and am not going with big companires that pay nickels and dimes. You will find something else I am sure, but beware of companies that over-hire and leave you sitting with no work.

I agree with posters above who recommend new training programs, especially those sponsored by government, EDD. I am sure you will find something and maybe even better than doing MT work.

Good luck.

I would milk unemployment and learn something new totally altogether. I plan to do this when I get laid off or I always have my ears and eyes open for new opportunities as this is a dying art. Check your unemployment office for displaced workers, there is a lot of free education out there now. Do not get scammed by a trade school without really investigating how the trade is doing in real life. They are still scamming new subjects who are lied to about a transcription career these days so be careful there. You could do acute care if you insist on staying in transcription, there is always low pay for VR and terrible dictators for this position.

First of all, my heart goes out to you. You ask if there is any hope for you. Of course there is! I would think that with your experience, you might try to market yourself:
1. At free-standing radiology centers. I don't know where you are located, but in California there are tons of them. I am quite claustrophobic, so when I needed an MRI, I went to a free-standing center that had an open MRI. I see all kinds of these centers advertised in the papers, etc.
2. Are you anywhere near a large teaching hospital? For years and years, I did radiology (in-house) for a large California teaching hospital and loved it. It seems the trend in Cal is to bring radiology jobs back in-house. Again, I do not know where you are, but might this work for you?
3. I would also contact the bigger clinics in the area, surgery centers, doc in a box, etc.
Above all, don't give up! And I will keep you in my prayers. Good luck to you!

On the plus side (it really is), SR improves TAT tremendously - BUT,

and can integrate with natural language processing to extract important data, suggest treatment, etc. Plus, docs dictating into good systems find it as easy as dictating always was. They can edit if they want, edit just a part and send the rest to us, or send the whole thing to us. The better the system, the less comes to us, and some are very, very good and getting better every day.

Also on the "plus" side, though--for us only, the percentage of major errors in front-end-processed radiology reports, according to one study I read, is 8 TIMES higher than reports that are sent to us back-end for transcribing or editing.

This enormous increase in numbers of errors holds for all other areas of medicine, too, and has to change. Errors kill AND cost institutions a lot of money. When physicians are pushed to invest more time to bring them down, they will, but how much and how much time can they afford to invest?

I believe these human and economic factors mean there will be work for some of us for some while. We're in an era of great experimentation and change, though, with tremendous enthusiasm for getting rid of our function. As the current wave of change plays out, which of us reading here will be pushed out and unable to find a job for months, if at all, unable to rejoin those who still have those jobs?

I don't know, but I sincerely believe everyone who isn't on the point of retirement, incapacitated physically or by grave responsibilities, or able to do without a year's income without devastation, should retrain. Now. If at all possible while still working. If you have the brains, get tough and go get a four-year degree so you can earn a college grad income. If not, trade school for a skill with a low but dependable income.

In the meantime, good luck finding a new position you like. Please come post your experiences for others who come looking for direction.

Thank you for encouragement - al

Helpful Hints?
Mar 12, 2010

I got an email today with a bunch of FYI... do it this way, type it that way.  I suppose it will be helpful at some point, but I just got feedback... back and for the first time ever I was corrected to type H and P instead of H&P.  How do you type it, does anyone know how it is supposed to be?  I think H and P looks stupid. Also, doc dictated vital signs:  see nursing notes and then went back later and changed it to unremarkable.  The QA changed it back to see nursi ...

A lot (if not most) of the commands are the same in 7.1 that you're used to.  The training encompassed everything, not just new information.  There are just a few additions, is all.  You still upload the same, get the QA note the same, back to ADT the same, etc. ...

Helpful Hints For MTs Leaving The MT Industry
Aug 01, 2012

As someone who worked as a professional full-time MT for 31 years (most of those years at home), I've learned the ropes the hard way when transitioning over to the "public workplace."  I'm here to offer encouragement to others who need to find another career in order to make a decent living.  I do still work 15-20 hours at home as an MT online, but I work a full time job in a completely different sector during the day.  I finally have the job of my dreams, and I absolute ...

Anyone Have Any Helpful Hints/suggestions For How To Go Faster
Jul 16, 2013

Since the report is already typed and we are just editing I know I should be going faster than I am.  Sometimes I spend as much time as I do if it was regular typing, but I know I should be going faster.  Do people go faster on VR and if so do you have any suggestions that will help. Thanks, ...

I Think I Will Be Leaving This Career This Next Year
Dec 28, 2013

I was an LVN/LPN for 13 years before deciding to change careers and work from home.  I was really burned out on nursing and needed a change and I really wanted to be home with my daughter when she got home from school.  Also, the employer I had at the time would hardly let me off work when my child was sick and she was young then.  She is now 16 and is going to be driving soon.  Now that she will be driving she can drive herself to and from school and I won't have to wor ...

Career Step - How Long It Took Some Of You To Complete The Program
Oct 21, 2009

I am currently enrolled in the Career Step program and I am wondering how long it took some of you to complete the program. I am a mother to 3 kiddos and I don't have time to work on it every single day. It seems a bit overwhelming if you look at all of the reports there are to transcribe. So, how long did it take for you to complete the program? Thanks, MT Mommy 2B ...

Hints.
Jun 17, 2010

If you think you hear P it could be B, and vice versa.  If you think you hear T, it could be D, and vice versa.  If you think you hear K, it could be G, and vice versa.  These sounds come from the same location in the mouth, same tongue placement, etc. but the difference is one set is voiced and one is voiceless. PTK (voiceless) BDG (voiced) When you are doing op notes or something requiring you to remember your anatomy and physiology,  you can open up a medical termi ...

Okay, Lets Try Tips/hints Again
Apr 01, 2014

The next tip/hint I have for everyone is the comma, semicolon, and colon. First of all, UNLESS YOUR DICTATOR IS VERBATIM, ignore their punctuation. Most doctors I have experience with wouldn’t know proper punctuation if it bit them in the behind. Just because they say “comma” doesn’t mean their correct. I won’t say much about the comma, because I think we all pretty much know how to use that. However, the semicolon stumps some people, especially doctors. A semicolon ...

Hints For Brand Names Vs Generic Drugs

I was hoping some more experienced MTs could help me with something.  I am struggling with remembering which are brand names and which are generics (so I know to cap them or not).  Is there some trick to this? Helpful QA Feedback

Helpful Kitty
Jun 09, 2011

Just Something I Want To Pass Along That Could Be Helpful
Sep 24, 2012

I, I think like a lot of the MTs on here are getting fed up with Express Scribe and the fact that you have to go to the Pro Version and downgrade to the free.  Stupidly on Thursday, I removed my copy of ES to install the version that the company I was going to work for uses.  Well, now, I cannot even configure the footpedal unless I purchase the product or one of their footpedals (my footpedal is an IN-USB-1 which has worked on Express Scribe in the past), but now, it is not even on th ...

Some of you don't need me to tell you this, but others might benefit from this advice.   Reading through the posts on this coding training, I am seeing some legitimate questions and concerns, but also some that are so off the wall that they are either the product of the world's worst paranoid or someone who is intentionally trying to discourage you. Regarding Helpful Suggestions From People Who Are Doing Well
Dec 02, 2011

Someone else has already suggested what I was going to say, going over your resume and making some changes. Another good idea is to get together with some MTs who are successful. Just as negativism rubs off, so does success. I've learned quite a bit from my friends who were successful years before I was. They've been at it a long time and are still going strong. Just as in any career, we each have our ups and downs, but we do well overall. Part of the reason why is, we keep learning f ...
