Regarding helpful suggestions from people who are doing well - I will add one to the list

Posted: Dec 02, 2011

Someone else has already suggested what I was going to say, going over your resume and making some changes.

Another good idea is to get together with some MTs who are successful. Just as negativism rubs off, so does success. I've learned quite a bit from my friends who were successful years before I was. They've been at it a long time and are still going strong. Just as in any career, we each have our ups and downs, but we do well overall. Part of the reason why is, we keep learning from each other. We get together occasionally and go out to eat. We don't talk about work all the time, but we keep up to date that way. We also know that if we have a question, we have people we know who will give us answers we can trust.

Yes, that always helps. So does - AncientMT

Reading books on productivity tips will help those who can't figure out how to create a structured library of macros, etc.

Some of us are top producers and have already done ALL of that and are still struggling in this lousy economy. This is a DYING PROFESSION, and all the "positivity" in the world is not going to change that, which some of you on here don't seem to grasp.

Please allow each of us to have an opinion of our own - Disagree with you

[ In Reply To ..]
I have no idea why you are struggling so much. Regardless, please allow each of us to have our own opinions. Don't abuse us for disagreeing with you. I wish you the best. Thanks.

Please allow each of us to have an opinion of our own. - AncientMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I didn't abuse anyone but merely acknowledged that some on here aren't facing reality and/or are painting a false picture. If that applies to you, then I can understand why you took umbrage.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, as I am entitled to mine.

Then there ate the FACTS that this profession is going down the toilet -- FAST -- and will likely be defunct in just a few years.

You can stick your head in the sand and pretend that it isn't happening, but that won't change the situation one iota.

I will agree with you that you will most likely be out of a job very soon - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
There will be changes. No doubt about that. Some will be able to handle them and others won't, just as it has always been. If you say that you will be out of a job, I believe you. Please don't speak for me. The future jobs will use many of the same skills. We may even have a different job title. We're going to lose people who don't have those skills, don't want to change with the time, or are just have grown snarlish and hard to get along with. Employers are going to feel the same way about snarlish people in the jobs as they change just as they do now. They prefer not to deal with them. Some of that is happening right now. If we have a group of MTs and management has to let some of them go, they will first of all let go the ones who make their lives miserable griping and complaining every day of the year. That is already happening.

Some of us do feel like dinosaurs, but ... - The original AncientMT
[ In Reply To ..]
... that doesn't mean there won't be a need for the skill set MTs have developed, in whatever "health record documentation" becomes.

Yes, the profession AS WE'VE KNOWN IT is undergoing a sea change thanks to many factors. You, like many of us who've been doing this from the time of IBM Selectrics to now, are perhaps justified in a bit of jaded cynicism about the future of the profession. I go there from time to time, myself. But I don't throw a wet blanket at folks who are trying to extract some positivity from the situation. There's a small possibility that we could be wrong, you know.

You're completely entitled to express your opinion in any way you choose, but please have the courtesy to use a different alias when you do. I've been using "AncientMT" on the boards for several months. No, I don't think I own the name, but it's rather disconcerting to see something posted with my accustomed moniker that I would not have said. Thanks.
Exactly. In fact, I'm seeing some hopeful signs - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
By the way, I used to use a certain moniker until someone else came in and started using it. Her messages tended to be less than articulate. She wasn't able to communicate unless she used vulgarities and 4-letter words. Obviously I stopped using that one after trying to put a disclaimer every time she wrote something. It turned out she was doing it on purpose to discredit anything I wrote.
The writing's on the wall. - AncientMT

Read the trade literature, and it's plain to see. MT will be defunct within the next 10 years.

We already know about 3 CPL editing VR, 1-paragraph EMR reports, $9-per-hour scribe jobs, etc. so don't need you to tell us about those.

Call it "throwing a wet blanket" or whatever you want. I call it UNMASKING THE TRUTH because that's what it is. You ostriches can keep doing MT and starve to death -- cheerleading the whole time -- as it peters out completely, I couldn't care less.

I will use whatever moniker I please on this board.

I have seen first hand what EMR is going to do to us. And there is literature out there. But most people just can't take the reality. It's useless to try and persuade them.
I don't think that's it. - Tammy
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't think those are MTs who need "persuading" at all.

There are certain folks who DESPERATELY want us all to believe that MT is a viable, lucrative profession that will be around for a long time. They are MTSOs and school owners. They patrol (and troll) these boards A LOT, especially lately. Any mention of the dim future of MT on here elicits immediate responses, many of them unreasonable. No MT who looks around and sees what outsourcing, offshoring, VR, and EHR is doing to our jobs would say the things that these people say.

They NEED MTs until they can squeeze the last dime out of the last client for the last report. They can't afford to have MTs jumping ship and going into other things, and they need newbies to enroll in their schools and for future exploitation. JMO

Knock yourself out, sweetie. - The former AncientMT
[ In Reply To ..]
It was just a polite request; get off your high horse. I am neither an ostrich nor a cheerleader, but if it suits you to throw labels around, be my guest. The "AncientMT" tag appears to have been hijacked by a bitter cynic, and I'm just as glad to disassociate from it.

I am a long-time (30+ years) MT and I am doing quite well, thank you. You do the profession a great disservice to paint with so broad a brush. You (not YOU-you, but the general, all-inclusive "you") create your own reality. If you are struggling, perhaps you need to look into your own situation and see what role your negative attitudes are playing. As someone else said, please let everyone have their own view of the profession--and success with it.

Where did you find MT friends - to meet with?

[ In Reply To ..]
Thanks for adding to the tips. I would love to meet with fellow MTs in my area, as just about everyone I knew in my former small MTSO have all moved away. I live in a small town and have worked at home for 15+ years, so a bit isolated. I tried looking on Facebook, but found that overwhelming. Any suggestions?

I found mine years ago in local what was then AAMT meetings - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I have worked in large hospitals, clinics, and at home as an IC. What did not work for me was meeting MTs on the job. Many of them were cliquish and just not friendly at all. I started attending AAMT meetings and met some people that I am happy to call friends now. It probably took about 3 meetings before I started feeling like they were friends and not just strangers at a meeting.

Anyone Have Any Helpful Hints/suggestions For How To Go Faster
Jul 16, 2013

Since the report is already typed and we are just editing I know I should be going faster than I am.  Sometimes I spend as much time as I do if it was regular typing, but I know I should be going faster.  Do people go faster on VR and if so do you have any suggestions that will help. Thanks, ...

Helpful Hints?
Mar 12, 2010

I got an email today with a bunch of FYI... do it this way, type it that way.  I suppose it will be helpful at some point, but I just got feedback... back and for the first time ever I was corrected to type H and P instead of H&P.  How do you type it, does anyone know how it is supposed to be?  I think H and P looks stupid. Also, doc dictated vital signs:  see nursing notes and then went back later and changed it to unremarkable.  The QA changed it back to see nursi ...

Helpful QA Feedback
Sep 14, 2010

Helpful Kitty
Jun 09, 2011

My kitty, who used to lie quietly under my chair, has just taken to sitting under my desk and "helping" me get through my transcription by pushing the foot pedal when I take my foot of it.  Short of putting her in the other room, which I may have to do, does anyone have any ideas how to get her to stop this?   She has also started licking my feet.  And yes, she has fresh water, clean litter box, and I just fed her.         ...

Just Something I Want To Pass Along That Could Be Helpful
Sep 24, 2012

I, I think like a lot of the MTs on here are getting fed up with Express Scribe and the fact that you have to go to the Pro Version and downgrade to the free.  Stupidly on Thursday, I removed my copy of ES to install the version that the company I was going to work for uses.  Well, now, I cannot even configure the footpedal unless I purchase the product or one of their footpedals (my footpedal is an IN-USB-1 which has worked on Express Scribe in the past), but now, it is not even on th ...

Some of you don't need me to tell you this, but others might benefit from this advice.   Reading through the posts on this coding training, I am seeing some legitimate questions and concerns, but also some that are so off the wall that they are either the product of the world's worst paranoid or someone who is intentionally trying to discourage you. The content and tone is a lot like some of the negativity that gets posted on the coding board every time some one asks about coding ...

Helpful Hints For MTs Leaving The MT Industry
Aug 01, 2012

As someone who worked as a professional full-time MT for 31 years (most of those years at home), I've learned the ropes the hard way when transitioning over to the "public workplace."  I'm here to offer encouragement to others who need to find another career in order to make a decent living.  I do still work 15-20 hours at home as an MT online, but I work a full time job in a completely different sector during the day.  I finally have the job of my dreams, and I absolute ...
