Hints for brand names vs generic drugs - sm

Posted: Aug 11, 2011

I was hoping some more experienced MTs could help me with something.  I am struggling with remembering which are brand names and which are generics (so I know to cap them or not).  Is there some trick to this? A website that can quickly (and obviously) tell you?  Perhaps some software you all have? Please, it is driving me crazy and my quality is suffering :(

Could you put them in your - expander?

Place the drugs in your expander so that the brand named ones come in capitalized? That way, you only have to look them up once.

Look them up the first time, put them in your word expander and - Olive

then you will learn them by using them. Drugs.com gives the generic name and the brand name. I still use my book American Drug Index.

I do it like this - sm

Same idea as the good suggestions above - I instruct my dictionary to capitalize it. This way, I type diovan and it corrects to "Diovan".

brand/generics - website

http://www.needymeds.org/ A website I like for brand/generic names.

If in doubt I don't capitalize and wait for - ruby

Stedman's to mark it when I spell check if it should be capitalized. Is this wrong?

Brand or generic - anon

Use RXlist.com and as you go put them in your shorthand expander; Instant Text, Shorthand, even word autocorrect. Put them all in as generics and then put the word you want typed as a Brand if that is the case. Like coumadin: Put in coumadin lower case, then replace with, put Coumadin with a cap. That way every time you type coumadin it will jsut cap for you and you won't have to remember each time. On generics, just leave alone. Because you are typing everything lower case, the only ones that will get replaced with a cap is the brand. Hope this makes sense.

Drugs...generic Or Not?
Dec 20, 2010

Ive asked QA this five times to no avail.  Truth is, I'm still not sure why SpellCheck doesn't cover this.  How do we know when I drug has switched over and is now generic and no longer requires capitalization?? I used to depend on Google (at the bottom of the page whether it is capped or not) but QA has bit me a couple times on this and for the life of me, even after researching, cannot find a 100% reliable answer to this question.  As always, thanks in advance! ...

Need Opinion - When You Hear ACE Bandage, Do You Think Brand Name Or A Generic Bandage
Nov 05, 2010

I have been out-of-town, enjoying being away from Medical Transcription for a few weeks, and upon skimming through the posts that I had missed, I noted that there was recently a discussion on the Word Help Board regarding ACE Bandage and if it should be all caps or not.  The debate seemed to center around whether ACE should be used for “ACE inhibitor” and Ace for “Ace wrap” to avoid confusion.  if you are talking about the original ACE™ wrap or ACE™ ...

Hints.
Jun 17, 2010

If you think you hear P it could be B, and vice versa.  If you think you hear T, it could be D, and vice versa.  If you think you hear K, it could be G, and vice versa.  These sounds come from the same location in the mouth, same tongue placement, etc. but the difference is one set is voiced and one is voiceless. PTK (voiceless) BDG (voiced) When you are doing op notes or something requiring you to remember your anatomy and physiology,  you can open up a medical termi ...

Helpful Hints?
Mar 12, 2010

I got an email today with a bunch of FYI... do it this way, type it that way.  I suppose it will be helpful at some point, but I just got feedback... back and for the first time ever I was corrected to type H and P instead of H&P.  How do you type it, does anyone know how it is supposed to be?  I think H and P looks stupid. Also, doc dictated vital signs:  see nursing notes and then went back later and changed it to unremarkable.  The QA changed it back to see nursi ...

Helpful Quick 7.1 Hints

A lot (if not most) of the commands are the same in 7.1 that you're used to.  The training encompassed everything, not just new information.  There are just a few additions, is all.  You still upload the same, get the QA note the same, back to ADT the same, etc. ...

Okay, Lets Try Tips/hints Again
Apr 01, 2014

The next tip/hint I have for everyone is the comma, semicolon, and colon. First of all, UNLESS YOUR DICTATOR IS VERBATIM, ignore their punctuation. Most doctors I have experience with wouldn’t know proper punctuation if it bit them in the behind. Just because they say “comma” doesn’t mean their correct. I won’t say much about the comma, because I think we all pretty much know how to use that. However, the semicolon stumps some people, especially doctors. A semicolon ...

Helpful Hints For MTs Leaving The MT Industry
Aug 01, 2012

As someone who worked as a professional full-time MT for 31 years (most of those years at home), I've learned the ropes the hard way when transitioning over to the "public workplace."  I'm here to offer encouragement to others who need to find another career in order to make a decent living.  I do still work 15-20 hours at home as an MT online, but I work a full time job in a completely different sector during the day.  I finally have the job of my dreams, and I absolute ...

Message From Drugs.com
Aug 08, 2012

There have been reports that the Drugs.com website is infectiing users with a virus. This is not correct. Back in June we identified a rouge advertisement that was being swapped out infrequently in place of a genuine ad. This ad launched a false virus threat message and directed the user to a website to pay to have the virus removed. The ad was removed and we have banned the network that supplied the ad. We have had no further issues since then. You can confirm that the website is safe by chec ...

Capitalization On Drugs

In the last few weeks Google has this new feature. It has a little picture of a pill on it so it is easily seen and recognized. This is so much better than scrolling down through the links to find o ...
