Helpful Kitty - Old Hand

Posted: Jun 09, 2011

My kitty, who used to lie quietly under my chair, has just taken to sitting under my desk and "helping" me get through my transcription by pushing the foot pedal when I take my foot of it.  Short of putting her in the other room, which I may have to do, does anyone have any ideas how to get her to stop this?   She has also started licking my feet.  And yes, she has fresh water, clean litter box, and I just fed her.

I have two cats who like to be in my office with me. One just goes and sleeps in her cat bed but the other likes to sit by my feet and he will often sit on my foot pedal too thinking he's helping me and will sometimes nibble my toes if I don't pay attention to him.

Does you foot pedal have any warmth to it? - Maybe that is why. NM

I have had cats all my life, and 1 in particular (my favorite I've ever had) used to do something really weird. I would play with him in "stalking mode" where I would move my hand back and forth, he would stalk and pounce and try to attack my hand, and during this attack I would rub his belly... which he did NOT like. Even though he disliked the belly rub, he would back off for a second and then come back for more. This wasn't cruel BTW... he enjoyed the play fight a lot. Anyhow, he would get so worked up that eventually he would go through the house, find one of my shoes, and bite and kick it in a frenzy. It was hilarious and baffling. I finally figured that, from a cat's perspective, they must identify with our feet since they're at eye level to them. Your cat probably figures if the hands aren't going to pay attention to them, the feet will (or in my cat's case, if the hands are getting the best of him, he can take on the feet with no problem). Again, this sounds crazy, but try putting one of your slippers or a sneaker near her when she's comfortably sleeping away from you. You might be able to trick her into thinking that she's near your feet and getting attention. Or you can try just encouraging her to sit near the foot that's not using the foot pedal.

Mine insists on nuzzling my hands on the keyboard. - The only sure way to get rid of her is to

pet her until she's forced to leave to get away from it.

You might try rubbing your foot/pedal with orange peel to se if that works, though. I've heard they don't like the smell. Roughening it up with a grater will release the oils.

Alternatively, if you have Nepeta outside, or a neighbor does, they do like that (mine always roll around and smash it flat in the garden), so you could try using that to lure her all the way away to, as suggested, the other foot. :) Pragmatist

My kitty loves the smell of new socks when I wear them, for some odd reason. She will "hug" the foot and begin to play fight with it, and rub her face all over it. I have noticed her doing the same thing if I have put certain arthritis medications on a sore foot or something. She likes the smell of some things, and dislikes the smell of others. I think they just want to be close to you. They are also more observant and probably is curious about your pushing the foot pedal all the time. They are only mimicking what you do, is all. Mine sits on my foot occasionally too, but when I encourage her to stop it, she will.

if I print something she tries to stick her paws in the printer to grab the paper as it comes out so I usually print when she's in another room. She used to practically sit on my mouse and keyboard or as soon as I got up from my chair she would jump in it. We got a mini trampoline and now she stays on that all day. My other cat, Mia slept all day yesterday up against the front door and looked so comfortable I didn't check the mailbox because I didn't want to disturb her. Luv them! :)

I did that with my cats when they were jumping on the kitchen table(ewww). They learned quick though. It only took about 3 or 4 times and now, like you, all I have to do is make the sound (s/l chew-chew) and point my finger (like I have the bottle) and they are gone. I just wish it worked for the kids and dog!

In our house we call it the cat .357.

I had to make little barriers, or "walls", on the - desk on either side of my monitor. sm

One of them specifically bugs me on the computer because she wants a treat. If I give her the treat, (I make her do one of her tricks, first!), then she eats it, goes and has a drink of water, and then usually takes a nap somewhere else.

So do I. Tip for others: Don't use your cup of coffee. - NM

Our household also has a helpful kitty. How I solved my problem was to buy one of those tall "cat condos" and put it next to my desk. She can sit on top of that and watch me (and feel like she is supervising, no doubt) while I do my work. Once she got the condo, she left the foot pedal alone.

LOL...I don't have an answer, but I can relate..sm - Tiny

I have 2 cats, 1 kitten, and a bulldog. One cat is constantly trying to lay in my lap while I type and the dog will sit and stare at me and then sneeze on me when he wants something. Drives me crazy.

I got an email today with a bunch of FYI... do it this way, type it that way.  I suppose it will be helpful at some point, but I just got feedback... back and for the first time ever I was corrected to type H and P instead of H&P.  How do you type it, does anyone know how it is supposed to be?  I think H and P looks stupid. Helpful QA Feedback

Just Something I Want To Pass Along That Could Be Helpful
Sep 24, 2012

I, I think like a lot of the MTs on here are getting fed up with Express Scribe and the fact that you have to go to the Pro Version and downgrade to the free.  Stupidly on Thursday, I removed my copy of ES to install the version that the company I was going to work for uses.  Well, now, I cannot even configure the footpedal unless I purchase the product or one of their footpedals (my footpedal is an IN-USB-1 which has worked on Express Scribe in the past), but now, it is not even on th ...

Some of you don't need me to tell you this, but others might benefit from this advice.   Reading through the posts on this coding training, I am seeing some legitimate questions and concerns, but also some that are so off the wall that they are either the product of the world's worst paranoid or someone who is intentionally trying to discourage you. The content and tone is a lot like some of the negativity that gets posted on the coding board every time some one asks about coding ...

Regarding Helpful Suggestions From People Who Are Doing Well
Dec 02, 2011

Someone else has already suggested what I was going to say, going over your resume and making some changes. Another good idea is to get together with some MTs who are successful. Just as negativism rubs off, so does success. I've learned quite a bit from my friends who were successful years before I was. They've been at it a long time and are still going strong. Just as in any career, we each have our ups and downs, but we do well overall. Part of the reason why is, we keep learning f ...
