I'd like to post my tips for getting through the day:  I have at least 8 different accounts (so far, keep getting more...)

I made a print out of each client profile, but for quick reference I have colored post it notes with tips like:

stacked/nc (for H&P and ROS),   means stacked, mixed case (no caps...)

pt name (+ or -),    patient's name allowed or not.

date format #         Some accounts allow the date to be typed, others prefer 01/01/2011.

ADT (Y or N)           ADT feed or not.

Verbatim acct (Y/N) mainly for op reports and the pre and postop diagosis.

Things like that.  The post its allow me to start working right off and I am to the point where I only refer to the entire client profile when I'm stumped or have a question.   I'm improving in production and accuracy too.

I'm sure that there are many, many wonderful ideas to speed up our work.  I'd like to start a thread of helpful tips and hints.  Your turn!  GO!  (thanks!)

That is very helpful and a good idea. I can see this post going in the same way as "what happens when you break a job?" Because my first thought was to get a doctor voodoo doll. I would like that >:)

I thought the "what happens when you break a job" post was funny, but poor soul who asked. In that regard it was sad that not one person actually answered her question (at least to the point where I read to).

OP: I do the same. I don't have that many accounts, but the post its work well for me.

I also have a drug reference site added to my "favorites", so I don't always have to grab a book or rely on the docs spelling.

I've printed out my client profiles and highlighted the things I feel I need to be watchful for.

I use index cards - NJA Queen

Some days it feels like shuffling a full deck of cards, but most days I only use a few. I use an index card for each client and pretty much list the same stuff you do- PE/ROS, pt name, allergies, forbidden abbreviations and anything particular to that account. And yes it is a pain when I get a new account to list all this stuff, but I only write it once. Make sure you put what state that account is in, it helps when searching for cities or nursing homes.

When we get an email from the QC regarding a certain account I just write the info on the back of the card in case the email system goes down and so I don't have to keep checking email for each account.

I also make a note in pencil of when I last checked the client profile to make sure I check it every month in case something changes.

I love tips too although I did like the voodoo doctor doll comment :)

I use index cards also, but have then in an old Roladex! Remember those! It's really easy access.

I have a lot of accounts and when I run out of those, they put me on "Helper pools", but I've been at this for so long I feel like an expert! I think everyone is on my Roladex index card file!

Great idea, Helpful hints and tips!
(i liked the broken job thread too, we laugh so seldom on this forum)

Helpful hints - Snowy Day

I too use index cards.

Another helpful hint: Under my favorites I have all my hospitals "find a doc" web-site. I find this much easier to search for a doc than going through our pick-list most of the time. Searching by specialty is much more effective than our pick-list.

helpful hint - abbreviations - MT

I found a medical abbreviation site which is helpful. I have it on my desktop and it is much quicker than using a book.

Helpful Hints?
Mar 12, 2010

I got an email today with a bunch of FYI... do it this way, type it that way.  I suppose it will be helpful at some point, but I just got feedback... back and for the first time ever I was corrected to type H and P instead of H&P.  How do you type it, does anyone know how it is supposed to be?  I think H and P looks stupid. Also, doc dictated vital signs:  see nursing notes and then went back later and changed it to unremarkable.  The QA changed it back to see nursi ...

Helpful QA Feedback
Sep 14, 2010

Have a hospital where you are to phonetically spell name if not given (it wasn't except to call him "Steven")  QA so kindly sent me QA feedback and the only thing on there was that apparently Steven was actually spelled "Stephun."  Is that ACTUALLY going to be of any help in the future?  QA wonders why we have an attitude?  DON'T WASTE ANY MORE OF MY TIME THAN IS ALREADY BEING WASTED.  ...

Helpful Kitty
Jun 09, 2011

My kitty, who used to lie quietly under my chair, has just taken to sitting under my desk and "helping" me get through my transcription by pushing the foot pedal when I take my foot of it.  Short of putting her in the other room, which I may have to do, does anyone have any ideas how to get her to stop this?   She has also started licking my feet.  And yes, she has fresh water, clean litter box, and I just fed her.         ...

Just Something I Want To Pass Along That Could Be Helpful
Sep 24, 2012

I, I think like a lot of the MTs on here are getting fed up with Express Scribe and the fact that you have to go to the Pro Version and downgrade to the free.  Stupidly on Thursday, I removed my copy of ES to install the version that the company I was going to work for uses.  Well, now, I cannot even configure the footpedal unless I purchase the product or one of their footpedals (my footpedal is an IN-USB-1 which has worked on Express Scribe in the past), but now, it is not even on th ...

Just A Helpful Suggestion ...
Mar 11, 2014

Some of you don't need me to tell you this, but others might benefit from this advice.   Reading through the posts on this coding training, I am seeing some legitimate questions and concerns, but also some that are so off the wall that they are either the product of the world's worst paranoid or someone who is intentionally trying to discourage you. The content and tone is a lot like some of the negativity that gets posted on the coding board every time some one asks about coding ...

Regarding Helpful Suggestions From People Who Are Doing Well
Dec 02, 2011

Someone else has already suggested what I was going to say, going over your resume and making some changes. Another good idea is to get together with some MTs who are successful. Just as negativism rubs off, so does success. I've learned quite a bit from my friends who were successful years before I was. They've been at it a long time and are still going strong. Just as in any career, we each have our ups and downs, but we do well overall. Part of the reason why is, we keep learning f ...

Helpful Hints For MTs Leaving The MT Industry
Aug 01, 2012

As someone who worked as a professional full-time MT for 31 years (most of those years at home), I've learned the ropes the hard way when transitioning over to the "public workplace."  I'm here to offer encouragement to others who need to find another career in order to make a decent living.  I do still work 15-20 hours at home as an MT online, but I work a full time job in a completely different sector during the day.  I finally have the job of my dreams, and I absolute ...
