Remote coding questions. - Melody

I currently have a small IC MT account that I plan to support myself on while I get through coding school. This IC account is all done via encrypted email and can be done from anywhere I can get a wifi connection. I have worked on this job while visiting friends in Italy. It is a wonderful thing.

My question is this: Are there opportunities for remote coders (maybe not in the beginning) than enable that freedom? I used to work remotely doing MT for a hospital, but it was not as flexible as the internet connection was required to be hardwired.

It really depends on who you work for. Many hospitals still have a paper record, and they scan it, so you can code it. Others are completely electronic. Typically, you have to get credentials to login to the hospital or clinic's electronic system to code. It will all depend on who you end up working for, and how they handle their workflow.

I can just about guarantee that you will not be able to send your coding back by email. It usually requires accessing the facility's computer system. Some do prohibit wifi connections. They may also require you to be physically within the US.

It is also unlikely that you will have your own remote office account. Offices do not need to contract out coding since the doctors do most of it. You are going to Andrews to learn professional coding, not office billing, and that is likely to result in an on-site or remote job with a large facility or HIMS staffing company. Those jobs are not the sort of thing you can do in your spare time while vacationing.

I think many employers would suggest that you use the vacation time they give you for your vacation and leave your job behind. Given what coding pays, I think that you will be able to afford to do that.

I recently obtained my Certificate from a community college for Medical Transcription/Coding. We all know the frustration in dictation where they don't use a pause button, how our salaries dwindle to nothing as a result. I noted an ad on the Job Seeker's Board to train to become a "remote scribe" for .07 to .08 CPL. I was browsing through the jobs board, and saw that Inscribe is hiring MTs and remote scribes. What is the difference? It says remote scribes input directly into EMR. Does anyone know anything about this company? I sent my resume and got a response right away. It seems like they might be a 'head hunting' agency for transcription of different sorts.
