Possible to do remote coding? - Biller/coder/MT

Posted: Dec 02, 2010

Are there any companies out there that hire specifically for remote coders.  I saw a few and applied but have never heard back.  I do have my CPC but I don't know if they are looking for anything in particular. I also have almost 18 years of billing/coding experience.  Maybe the jobs are just rare.

Two companies I know of who hire remote coders are Amphion and Precyse, perhaps you've already tried them. A Google search might reveal more names.

Has anyone tested with Amphion? - Biller/coder/MT

Just wondering if anyone has done the assessment and if they finished it. I didn't expect it to be so long and timed. I immediately felt pressured due to the "timed" situation and I just could not concentrate so I saved what I had done and logged out. Now, I wonder if I can go back in and continue or since I had already timed out, I am done. Does anyone know? I am just one of those bad test takers where someone basically hits a clock and says GO. I just mentally freeze up. Now I am bummed I probably blew it.

Write to them and ask - You never know

Can't hurt to ask.

There are a lot of remote coding jobs. - sm

Remote coding jobs aren't rare; there are loads of them. Like any employer, they are looking for credentialed coders with an appropriate work history, able to work independently following written guidelines and procedures with even unfamiliar specialties and types of work, and who demonstrate the positivity and appropriateness in interpersonal relationships that is required to work remotely in coding. They are looking for self-starters with high standards for accuracy, productivity, and ethics.

That is what all employers are looking for in coders, but remote positions typically have an unwaivable requirement for recent (current) experience, since the coder has to hit the ground running and be able to work without supervision.

Tests aren't just to see if you can get the right answers. They also provide an indication of how the applicant fits with the employer's expectations and needs regarding work behavior, especially with respect to productivity and accuracy.

Remote coders usually maintain accuracy rates of 98% or better and they are extremely productive workers. That's why that test was very long with a very short time limit. In all honesty, if you did not expect that and found it unreasonable, it is likely that your work experience has not prepared you to work in a remote coding situation. You would not be happy in a job like that, much less able to succeed in it, because that kind of production is expected all day, every day.

That isn't to say that you cannot become comfortable with a situation like that, of course. Perhaps you could review, study, and practice until you felt more able to tackle a test like that.

Note that they are looking for coders, not biller/coders. While there is nothing wrong with billing, it isn't what remote coders do. If you are presenting your experience to these companies as billing/coding, they may peg you as an office employee who copies codes off charge tickets and who has limited ability to function doing actual coding.

Excellent post!!! I understand what your saying and I must have came off as a whiner. Their test was not inappropriate on any level and it was very thorough. I was just ill-prepared time-wise with so many distractions and then I stressed myself because I knew it was being timed and I was not going to make it. I love to code. I've been doing it for years and work for a large medical center coding. I may go back and try to test again at a different time and not in the evening where my house is a zoo when everyone is wanting/needing something. I have also done transcription at home for years, it's my second job so I know the time constraints of doing production all day. Again thanks for the post. It hit the nail on the head!!

There are several companies who use remote coders. Maxim is one who will test you for a remote position. However, you need to make sure that one, you have had 3+ years of hospital coding experience, such as inpatient, outpatient coding, and that you can pass their test with an 80% or better. Those are the requirements as of 2010, unless it has changed.

Remote Coding Questions.

I currently have a small IC MT account that I plan to support myself on while I get through coding school.  This IC account is all done via encrypted email and can be done from anywhere I can get a wifi connection.  I have worked on this job while visiting friends in Italy.  It is a wonderful thing.  My question is this:  Are there opportunities for remote coders (maybe not in the beginning) than enable that freedom?  I used to work remotely doing MT for a hospital ...

Remote Job After Graduating
Mar 28, 2013

I'm curious how many of you graduated from your medical coding/billing course and found a job to work remotely?  I'm currently a transcriptionist looking to enroll in a coding/billing course, but will not be able to work onsite to gain experience that most of these companies are wanting.  I've been doing some research and most of them want you to have 3 years onsite experience.  I will need something remotely after graduation.  I thought I would check here and ...

Remote Scribes
Jun 24, 2013

We all know the frustration in dictation where they don't use a pause button, how our salaries dwindle to nothing as a result.  I noted an ad on the Job Seeker's Board to train to become a "remote scribe" for .07 to .08 CPL.  Doesn't it seem this would also dwindle to nothing as it seems there would be far more waiting for data to enter and would take forever to complete a line if you are working in real time.  Anyone have any info on how this would work? ...
