comes down to the money factor. I'm willing to bet, as you've stated, that it all has more to do with a higher pay rate for SR, TR, and/or benefit rate (for PTO, make-up pay) that the company is just no longer willing to pay. They also don't like paying for full-time employee medical benefits, either.

I think the age factor may just be due to longevity within the industry and having stayed on with the same company for many years. These long-time MTs probably on average have the higher pay rates within the company.
