No time for this foolishness. The main threat to our jobs is technology - and you cannot stop that.

If this were a "business problem" I would feel differently, but it is technology that will continue to put more and more pressure on medical transcription and one day, probably not in the far distant future, eliminate it.

First, it was the internet that made it as easy for someone living in India to log onto a dictation system located in the US as it is for someone who lives in Omaha.

Then, the cut-and-paste, multiple-choice, form-driven EMR.

Then, of course, speech rec, which is poised to make a huge leap forward in perhaps 18 months or less.

And, even as a business issue, you'll never get transcription clients to unwind the ruinous contracts that they've managed to "negotiate" with transcription companies, which in turn have put downward pressure on our income. It just ain't gonna happen.

And finally, there are too many MTs who just won't join you. I hate to say it, but despite the rage people express, there are too many who won't stick their necks out - and who can't afford to lose the little that they make now.

Stop chasing pipe dreams of "MT activism." If you're young, get into another career. If not, there may be no choice but to ride the tiger until it drops in its tracks.

Sorry, but that's reality. Any time you spend mounting protests, filing petitions, holding worthless "discussions about what we should do" would be better spent finding ways to supplement your income or training for a new career.

There's no way to get this toothpaste back in the tube.
