Companies rampantly abuse the system by hiring ICs when they should be hiring employees. I previously worked on a contract where I had to have a license to sign in to work. There were limited licenses available, not enough for all the ICs working on the contract. This very much means that I had to keep a regular schedule to have work, very much like an employee would, only I was not paid benefits or vacation pay, and I was not paid when there was a lack of work. Talk about a losing situation. That plus the hospital would tend to flood the MTSO ICs with ER notes. Since we were paid by the minute, transcribing ER notes was very much a losing proposition (much more lines than minutes with ER notes, which I am sure the hospital administration very well knows), leading me to barely break minimum wage when only ER notes were available. Not worth it.
