I'm 50, so it was the 80s when I was 18. I always thought the 80s was already pretty modern age. Well, it's certainly not the 1950s. I guess it could be society too. At the same time, I think one does have more opportunities when one has parents who are more involved during your upbringing, and being involved doesn't mean merely providing food and shelter. In fact, if parents provide only food and shelter and continue to provide that even when the child is well into their 20s, that is the opposite of parenting, IMO.
