"Deciphering bad dictation" ... - Linda

Posted: Sep 5th, 2015 - 9:14 pm In Reply to: How do you know - Look in the mirror

Is NOT what we are paid to do. Thirty years ago, we were paid to transcribe normal dictation with occasional mumbles and were paid 2-3 times the measly line rate that we are paid today. There was communication with the doctors so we could help them curb dangerous dictation habits. There is now NO communication with the doctors to warn them about dangerous dictation styles with a high risk of error. They get back an accurate report that we made far less than minimum trying to decipher, so they think their is nothing wrong with their dictation! We can pull up old reports to try to decipher word-for-word what the lazy, uncaring mumble-mouth or ESL is attempting to spit out, but our production and wages drop to the level of threatened termination or unlivable wages! You can not just leave blanks for everything sloppily mumbled as this would leave too many blanks and the report you struggled over would be sent back to the pool by a QA person for another unfortunate MT to have to struggle through without any pay. You can sugarcoat the profession all you want but the truth is blatantly obvious to most of us.
