make up the time. You can choose to take the time off w/o pay. Companies (namely Nuance) hate this so they act like they don't know about this law and try to make employees believe they have to use PTO or make up time. You don't. Not in CA anyway. Of course, if you choose to take time w/o pay you don't GET PAID, but you do have that option.
