I am on site QC. I'm sorry, but reading MT comments and sorting out words they can't understand is your job. Our platform includes a comments box for questions. If you are not able to differentiate between what the MT thought they heard and what you hear, maybe you are in the wrong job. As far as citing research, maybe they are doing that to save you time so you don't repeat what has already been done. I personally appreciate all the feedback I can get.
