With the current unemployment situation, it was only a matter of time - VR was the solution

Posted: Aug 26, 2010

All these big companies knew the bill would pass, especially with the current unemployment situation.  How could anyone vote no?

Why do you think they came up with VR in our industry?  It was the only profitable solution.

You *do* know VR has been around for a really long time, right? - VRoldie

I'm pretty sure no one has a crystal ball.

Our industry is perfect for technology to some day replace us. THAT is the issue, not offshoring.

Of course I know this. It has been a long time coming though. - It is here to stay.

VR has been tried and failed, tried and failed, and then tried and improved upon to the point that it is a viable option to offshoring and having say 10 MTs on an account instead of 20. In the past, clients have refused to allow their work to be offshored, and some smaller MT companies would not go that route. It was so hard for them to compete and be profitable that VR had to eventually succeed, and now it has.

I see many practices being bought out now by the big medical corporations due to the new healthcare reform. These corporations will also be providing the MT service, probably with MTSOs. With EMR, etc. being required, practices with say 10-30 doctors just don't want to get into the "computer business," so they will let these larger corporations handle that for them.

I would say that no matter who you work for or what kind of MTing you do, it would be best to learn VR efficiently if you want to stay in the MT/editing business.

Again, it is not illegal to offshore work overseas - just not so profitable anymore. The government can no more stop that than they can stop you from going on vacation overseas. Hopefully, now we will see a reverse trend in all industries. Should help provide additional tax dollars here, social security fund, and reduce the unemployment situation. What better way to stimulate the economy!

Unemployment More Than Full-Time At MModal

Unemployment While Working Part Time IC
Feb 25, 2015

I have a question concerning unemployment and I hope I can word this correctly. I have 2 jobs. One is IC with a very small volume - about 1500 lines per 2-week pay period. I also have a full-time job as an employee. I will be laid off my full-time job this Friday due to loss of work. I am considering filing for unemployment, but I wonder how my IC job will affect my unemployment, if at all? I also have an option of receiving more work from the IC job, but still would not be making as much as I d ...

Getting Out Of MT -- No Matter WHAT!
Feb 26, 2012

My 2-1/2-decade MT career is coming to an end. When I think back on how *HAPPY* I was back in the good ole days (late 80s into late 90s) as an MT and then contrast that with the picture now, it makes me want to cry.  We made GOOD money for someone without a degree, had GOOD benefits, and were at least somewhat appreciated back then.  In retrospect (hindsight is always 20/20), working conditions began going downhill when we became isolated from the physicians (as if we w ...

No-win Situation
Nov 22, 2010

I've been a transcriptionist for 29 years, the last 14 of which have been working from home.  My husband used to always carry me on his insurance but he lost his job (the plant closed down where he worked) and he has subsequently gone on disability.  He's 62, and is soon to be on Medicare.  I need insurance in a bad way, but I've tried and I just can't maintain 150 lines an hour.  I manage between 125-150.  I think holding us to a quota like ...

Bad, Bad Situation
Dec 23, 2012

I expect to get flamed or slammed here, but I have a question. Is there anyone else on this board that works for the measily 7 cpl for straight typing and if so, how in heck do you survive? I am a pretty fast typist and I use a word expander, but I find it almost impossible to make any kind of a living from this now. The last MTSO I worked for the hospital decided to go with the Q and I did find another MTSO to work for, but for 30% less than what I was making before. I have been an MT for 1 ...

What Do You Do In This Situation?

Is This A Legal Matter?
Dec 26, 2009

I was hired full-time by a small company 3 months ago, offered 15.00 hr, just recently demoted because of a complaint of quality (which was very questionable), told they would pay me 5 cpl (woohoo) for production.  Now they are not supplying me with any work, let alone full-time work!  Dont they have an obligation to fire me, lay me off or supply me with work?  How can they do this?  I cant get unemployment if I'm employed, but my employer isnt supplying me with any work ...

No Matter How Hard I Try, I Just Cannot Keep My Lph Up.
Jan 30, 2015

I'm surprised I haven't received performance management yet. I just cannot keep my line count up high enough since going to Fluency 7.6. This is too frustrating. Maybe I should copy a job into Word and see if the line count matches. Although, it could be because the ASR output has been so horrible and I am stopping 3x more to make corrections. I don't get why ASR outputs synonyms of what was said and alternative ways to phrase what was said, not to mention the downright w ...

This No Work Situation Is Getting To Me. Am I The Only
Dec 21, 2011

one out here with nothing most of the time?  I filed for partial unemployment but I really don't know what that is going to do for me yet.  I am just trying to get through the holidays and then really pound the pavement looking for something else.  Right now there are just no jobs in my area.  Thank God my husband is working but we do need my pay to make ends meet, so I'm really discouraged what has happened since being bought.  Sorry to vent, I just feel reall ...

Very Discouraged About Job Situation.
Jan 26, 2012

I have been in business for 30 years and I have never seen things this bad. I am currently out of work, after having steady work for the last 5 or 6 years. This is new for me and after applying for several companies and no response, I am very discouraged. The companies say they are bogged down with applications and not able to reply to everyone. I feel for all you out there who are out of work now. God help us all. I guess all we can do is pray for a miracle at this point. ...

Coping With NSA Situation
Aug 07, 2012

How are you all coping with this NSA crap?   Giving up Friday evenings to try to make up hours is just not always possible.  Sometimes there are too many hours to make up anyway.  Most of my PTO was used up before they decided to let us take unpaid time off.  Second jobs?  Using PTO?  I know I am not alone in this situation, how are you all handling it?   ...

Hypothetical Situation
Feb 19, 2014

Let's say for a moment you get this kind of exchange: TSM: When will be making up the time you missed from your appointment? To be honest, I don't really like this line of work at all, my motivations are being here are strictly financial. Your company is just a stepping stone, a crutch, until I can find something that can get me out of this dying industry. Has management ...

Can Anyone Explain The Situation When You Are OOW

Every week on certain days there is no work so I am having to flex flex flex PTO PTO until all used up, etc. I have read of some of you getting minimum wage due to OOW, can someone tell me how to achieve that? I am so fed up with this. I am pretty much out of PTO and don't want to use it for this anymore. A Matter Of National Security?
Sep 28, 2012

With the nature of world affairs and US relations such as they are, I can't help but think how wrong it is for companies in general, but specifically MTSOs, to be sending highly sensitive information overseas the way they do. It scares me to think about my social security number, date of birth, address, etc. being handled by someone who doesn't necessarily feel the sense that they must protect that information. Maybe instead of complaining about how much work is being offshored, we s ...

Why Does Upload Speed Matter?
Jan 10, 2013

I don't get it. Suddenly companies are asking about download & upload speed of my computer. My computer has worked just fine for MT work for over 9 years now. Now I'm looking for work and because my upload speed isn't 1.5 or above, places won't hire me despite my qualifications.  ...
