Important Work? Couldn't Be - Meh

Posted: Aug 07, 2014

It's ironic how we get emails about how important we are to patient's medical care and safety, yet we get paid a beggar's rate. Flipping hamburgers is a more important job; no customer wants a burnt hamburger, which explains why you can make more money at McDonald's.

Our work is important and I know you know that. Some MDs take great care with their reports and then there are those that believe it to be a waste of time. We're at the bottom of the totem pole now, bleeding money out our orifices for who? These all encompassing healthcare organizations that have purchased the majority of the hospitals have no loyalties to anyone, just to their "shareholders", their wallets, and least of all to their employees. Not one acute care facility within 100 miles of me has in-house MTs anymore, all being outsourced to the companies we work for. Now we have to compete with the offshore people! Our companies are being bought out by those offshore people. Am seeing a trend also of MTs not properly trained, doing crappy work, cherry picking the best work, and some of the good companies we still have around putting up with a lot of drama queens not doing the work they were hired for, only working when they feel like it. Then enter us old dogs that depend on this check to survive who work 6 or 7 days a week and still can't make the money we made 5 years ago. Offshore and bad voice recognition software have killed this occupation. The good VR software learns and doesn't keep giving us back the same stuff that I still can't understand what it thought it heard. REALLY! VR that takes longer to clean up all the time is killing me. Offshore is killing me. Those large healthcare organizations buying up all our hospitals, owning so many of them, and choking the heck out of the workforce are ruining the industry. They make everyone not care anymore because all they care about is the bottom line -- NOT THE PATIENT AND DEFINITELY NOT THEIR EMPLOYEES, contracted or in-house. Cutting corners all over the place in-house to the point I'd have to be half dead before going there. MRSA, MSSA, and all the other diseases their cheap, cutting corner butts are enabling. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

I agree with you 100%. I was a transcriptionist and a unit clerk in a healthcare organization hospital system. I watched the transcription department get laid off one by one, and then the ones left they cut their pay, got rid of OT, got rid of flexing, and trained them on EHR, which made even less money. I jumped ship in the same hospital system and worked as a unit clerk. The cuts that I saw the hospital made to save money was so scary, I thought I would try to never be a patient there. They wouldn't buy us pens (I mean this is little, but still important when you work behind the desk). When a patient's family came up to the station and ask for a pen to write something to the doctor, I had to literally run around the unit looking for one or just use one of mine in my purse. I notice too typing these reports after being a transcriptionist for 6 years at a hospital system and then now typing for Nuance, that it seems like they aren't doing a lot of tests on the patients like they used to. It probably is my imagination, but when a patient came into the ER 5-6 years ago it seems like they did every test or anything under their power to get to the bottom of it, now it seems they try to do just the bare minimum. Maybe that is good though, not wasting time or resources.

Labor Day And OOW, But Couldn't Have It Off?
Sep 01, 2014

I knew it....I am not a moron.....hiring all these MTs for these accounts, running OOW on a regular work day.....did they think we would all stay busy on Labor Day?  I am disgusted and am taking the day off.  I ask about being off.......NO.  Don't you think that managers could make schedules knowing the work is slow?  Let people off if they ask, making sure to have at least 2 MTs on in case some work comes in?  That is too easy a fix....let everyone just be OOW and ...

I had a discussion with a friend that paid like 400 dollars to clean a bug off her computer..I think she got scammed but thats a whole other topic...The person "fixing" her computer was Indian.. He told her we used to get paid terribly, but now I get paid real well. Hum, I wonder why? Maybe cause now that they have all our jobs and our information, they can demand higher wages and the companies must acquiesce or risk some major hacking scam? So here is my bet, IF and I say if, medical transcr ...

PHOENIX MEDCOM - Couldn't Find The Answers

Hello. I looked through the archives but couldn't find the answers I was looking for. I read the post for Phoenix medcom. I am very interested in doing front office stuff while doing transcription. WHAT THE ***? IMPORTANT!! ALL MUST READ!
Dec 17, 2009

The HITECH Act: Will You Be Fine, or Fined? FRANKLY, OUR GOVERNMENT SUCKS BIG TIME!  I AM STILL USING A WORK COMPUTER, IS THAT GOOD OR NOT??? Under the new Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) that takes effect this upcoming February, you as a transcriptionist could now be directly liable for any private health information (PHI) that is stolen or somehow reaches the public domain. That could include any transcriptions you produce that are emailed ...

Regarding HIPAA - This Is Important For MTs
Jan 28, 2010

if we are to be held responsible for any kind of so-called 'security breach' which can be so easily manipulated to either just get ridf US MTs or at least make life a iving ____ for those of us left in these jobs (for example, if your reports are not 100% perfect - because 98-100% would no longer make sense because an error is an error and all are a security risk and breach - (this is so ridiculous I almost cannot even write it)); however, an MT can and will be fired for such?  Im ...

IMPORTANT! Every MT/MME Needs To Read This!
Mar 03, 2010

Just spoke to someone I know in TAA/Unemployement office.  FIRST TIME RIGHT is a gray area. We can fight this because it is a gray area. It is not right that if a doctor dictates and we cannot understand what they are saying for sure and we can get docked in pay, literally take money from us.  IT IS NOT LEGAL.   That is probably why the big bosses are on this board to see what they can get away with.  We have every right to fight them.  It is just wrong!  I WAS ...

IMPORTANT! NEW CAREERS FOR MTs.
Aug 18, 2011

I have been enrolled in college for the last year while still working.  Found out today about a whole new carrer that has just come out and being created because of EHR/EMR and now being offered and will become even more popular. My teachers in college informed me of a meeting they had in the city where I live.  This meeting was held with physicians, PA's, NP's, MT's, Medical Assistance, nurses, etc.  Because of EHR/EMR, most doctor's (about 78%) do not like ...

Important Question
Oct 21, 2012

I am asking for opinions and suggestions only...no bashing, please. I "worked" for a client as an IC for a total of one week, two dictations, equalling about MAYBE $40 in pay. I have not actually counted lines, so I don't know. What Do Hospitals Deem Important?
Oct 06, 2012

My friend works for a local hospital that I used to work for.  That institution just recently outsourced their MT department to Nuance. The hospital has hired a "Life Coach" to direct their "Learning and Development" department.  They have announced that the L&D section will be "massively expanding" in the near future.  Their mission is to come up with new worthless slogans (like they one they had in place when I worked there) to put on posters plastered all over the hospital ...
