MedQuist employee computer use - newbiegal

Posted: Jun 08, 2010

I am a new hire with MQ and they sent me a computer to use.  How strict are they on the thing about being forbidden to use it for anything personal?  It says no personal email, chat, web surfing, etc; however, I had to shut down and pack up my personal computer because I had no space for both right now, so this makes things sort of a pain for me.  I'm on here now from the MQ computer, but I probably shouldn't be.  Do they have a way of keeping tabs on that?

Thanks.

I do not work for them. But this board stays pretty busy. - soooooooo

if you all use company computers, then you're all in trouble! haha!

Seriously though, I have no clue! Sorry! But, I highly doubt someone is jumping from the MQ computer to their personal one to get on MT Stars to complain.

I don't work for Medquist so I can't speak to whether or not they keep tabs on computer use. However, it might be a HIPAA violation. At the very least you do not want your work computer being infected by viruses or spyware when it contains confidential patient information. Permitting family members access to it is definitely a HIPAA violation. If your employer furnishes the PC, they have a right to tell you how you can use it. When I worked at home my employer furnished the computer. I used it for work only and had a separate PC for personal use with a router. If space is an issue for you, I would suggest using a computer at the library or internet cafe for personal things until you can make other arrangements, just my opinion.

This is a good point. I am trying to use my iPhone most of the time but there's no keyboard support (yet). I think I may try to find a small netbook so I can do my personal stuff off-hours.

Thanks!

I do check my personal mail from my computer, as well as here, and the weather, etc. I have worked for Spheris for about 6 years (so not aware of how MQ does things as of yet), and never had a problem. I don't download anything to it, or anything like that, but email doesn't seem to be an issue. I also just have my personal tower (actually I have 2), that I have right next to me, and all I do is switch over my peripherals (monitor, mouse, keyboard) and use my personal without having 2 of everything, just an extra tower. Yeah, it's a pain in the butt, but it beats having to have the room for 2 different complete set ups.

Do you know they have switches so you can switch back and forth between the 2 towers so you don't have to change everything else? Just thought I'd let you know. You might look into that.

No I didn't, thanks! I guess I always figured there had to be something like that, but never really thought to look....one of those laziness takes over things I guess :) I may have to look into that now, since I have work and 2 personal towers going on now.

doing MQ work. Just don't keep anything that is in HIPAA violation on the computer such as reports containing names, etc. If they were strict on what you could access with the computer, they'd have it setup with things blocked before sending it out to you. I've used an MQ supplied computer 6+ years without problems. I do also have a personal computer and have all my MQ stuff on that one too. This way if I have any problems with one computer, I just switch to the other one and it's business as usual.

I guess every place is different in terms of what they permit, I know my employer was/is pretty strict about that. You should have signed some kind of HIPAA/confidentiality agreement, use of the company computer is usually spelled out. I guess it's all in the interpretation; I was never willing to take a chance with equipment that did not belong to me. I like the idea of having 2 towers, and of course a notebook would work too.

thanks everyone - newbiegal

I suppose I will just use the iphone until I get a netbook or something. Appreciate the feedback!

Does anyone else work for Medquist? I have been working for them for 8 years now and am getting really fed up with their unrealistic policies!! I swear 85% of the executives for that company have never even transcribed one report including my own supervisor. They want to you to maintain 98% accuracy while following every single clients nit-picky policies and then having to translate about 85% of the transcription received from foreign doctors....while maintaining a 150 line per hour production b ...

Possible That I May Be A MQ Employee Soon

Hi everyone,  It seems the hospital I am employed by may be outsourcing completely to mq. Rumor has it, if this happens then the 20 or so MTs will be going to MQ or not have a job. Can anyone tell me what I am looking at if that happens, trying to figure out if I should be looking for employment elsewhere.  here are my main questions:  1.  Is there a starting pay or is everyone paid differently? 2.  Is there a schedule or is it flexible? 3.  What kind of benefi ...

Which Is Better, Employee Or IC?
Dec 16, 2014

I am a part time employee of an MTSO. In California the min wage is $9/hr, which means at 0.85/line for editing my LPH must add up to $9, while MTs in other states may only have to make $7.50 or so to remain employed. My Team Leader said that is somewhat unfortunate for me; as a 1 year out-of-school newbie I'm not as fast as other MTs.  A few years ago I was an IC and I recall they did have a minimum line count per day but I don't recall having to produce more than ...

IC Versus Employee
May 14, 2011

This post is not what you probably thought it was going to be.  I am not going to list the pros and cons of being an IC or am employee. It appears that MTSOs are "fudging" on these two classifications of workers to get the advantages. For example, as an IC you make your own hours.  There is no schedule; that is the nature of being an IC.  Yet these MTSOs want you to work a set schedule.  Another example:  You are hired as an employee.   Because you're an employee, you shoul ...
