Change from company-provided computer to own computer - ANOM

Posted: Aug 04, 2011

I am in the process of transitioning jobs and will be going from a company-provided computer to my own.  Any suggestions on what software programs are needed, virus protection, word expanders, line counting, and hardware like foot pedal?  The hospital I am looking into will be using Microsoft Word.  Any comments on whether this is a good program or not to transcribe on?  Any tips?  I have been with the same company for 15 years, so have been out of the loop and need all the help I can get.

Most often, the employer provides software so I'd not make any purchases at this point in time. Also, Word has autocorrect which is easy to use to add your shortcuts to, so again, no $$ invested.

All of these questions should be answered by the hospital hiring you. As an employee, you could expect them to provide you with a foot pedal and any other special hardware (other than your computer, although as an employee, you could request that too).

I wouldn't make any major changes to your PC until you fully understand what their needs are and what they will or will not be providing.

If they do not provide a medical spellcheck, I'd encourage you to get one.

Good luck!

No one likes to be yelled at. It's annoying.

The post was originally in all caps. - The OP went back and changed it

after it was pointed out to her that all caps is yelling in cyberspace.

Haven't you got anything better to do than post messages about posters typing in all caps? It certainly doesn't hurt anyone's ears if they do!
It makes it harder to read. We stare at a screen all day; this board should not - make being here a chore. nm

I'm with you! Why on earth do people need to shout at each other in caps? Has nobody heard of netiquette? Geez Louise.
Sure, just maybe not walk up to someone at a party - and start out by saying, "Stop talking so loud"?

It would seem quite impolite, even if the person was talking louder than necessary.

when I don't think the OP was trying to be offensive. There's a nice way to point out that someone has made an error and I think bashing them over the head with a demand is certainly not the right way. The woman merely wanted to ask a couple of questions (and when it was pointed out by me that she had created a faux pas she quickly corrected it).

If ya feel better bashing someone because they "shouted" to your eyes, well then let's hope that's the biggest problem you ever have.

I just went through the same thing. Only difference is that I had worked on my own equipment with a previous company. The company I am working for now has required the following: MS Word 2009 (MS Office 2009), IE 8.0, high speed internet, 256 bit, and Windows XP (I would not recommend Vista), AAMT BOS, and several references (electronic or book)I prefer electronic since it is easier and quicker to access. I also have Instant Text as my word expander program (we are allowed to use anyone we want), foot pedal, Headphones, virus protection. They supply the dictionary and load the program to be used for dictation, and their own line counting program. I will start training this afternoon. Technical support with the company will usually contact you before training to load their software onto your computer. Not sure if I missed anything but this will give you some idea as to where you need to start. Of course, every company will have their own specifications as to what is needed. I have found that the above equipment is pretty standard. Good Luck!

Company Computer

I currently have a company-issued computer and when hired I think I signed the boiler plate agreement not to add any programs.  I really want to load my Instant Text so I do not have to rebuild everything.  I am not tech saavy so was wondering if the company can tell if I actually put anything on the computer?  I know they can go into my computer if I use a program that allows them to get into my machine and make adjustments but not sure if they can monitor it in any other way?  Thanks for a ...

I'm just talking about employees here, not ICs.  It amazes me that as a company employee, we would not be provided the most important tool we need to work with all set up to company specs, loaded with company s/w.  If we worked on site, would we be expected to bring in our own computers?  I don't think so. Computer Age VS 6.1
