What is a fair rate per audio minute? Is 0.6 okay? I've never been paid that way before - Thanks

I've seen them advertise paying between 40-65 cents per audio minute. We had someone who poated here recently who did general transcription and was paid by audio minute. She stated in general it takes 4 times the number of minutes to transcribe it, so a 15 minute tape would take one hour, generally, to transcribe. So .60 per audio minute based on that would be about $9. per hour. There are all kinds of variables which scare me away from being paid per audio minute like unintelligible meetings or conference calls that are very hard to understand with poor sound quality. I would want to try one tape before deciding whether to stick with it.

Rose, you're right. - Thanks

I was just too dumb to figure it out before, but these days with straight MT, I probably do about 160 minutes a day, which would be about $96 a day, or $12 an hour. Still not good.

Oh well, that rev.com thing sounded kind of fun and different and we all want to bail on MT.

I think it varies highly, based on who you're - working for. The person I am - SM

doing general transcription for right now doesn't want me wasting too much time trying to fill in blanks, especially if it's got a lot of background noise. One account is interviews done at a busy airport, of all places, and the conversations are between two people with Spanish accents. Our agreement on those airport conversations is to leave a blank, highlight it in yellow, and mark the time on the audio (i.e., "@03:58:07") where it can be re-listened to. I go back and re-listen one time, while proof-reading, and if I can't hear it then, it goes back with a blank. The employer mainly wants the gist of the conversation back, not every single word or piece of punctuation. That enables me to charge my regular price for those tough transcription jobs, rather than my higher price. So we both win in the end!

I charge $40/audio hour for non-MT transcription. - Thats for the easy stuff. If it is -sm

difficult, equivalent to or harder than typical ESL MT work, then I charge +/- $50/audio hour.

I find MT takes about 3x the audio time to transcribe, mainly because of all the specific job description minutia I have to slog through for each account, and often each individual doctor.

For my non-MT work, it's usually transcribing meetings or conversations, has a simple format, and the only research I do is usually spelling of proper names, towns, or the occasional foreign word or phrase. I find I can do that work at 2x the audio time, and $40/audio hour comes out to $20/hour, which is the least amount of money I will work for, regardless of what I'm doing.

(PS): Just as an FYI - I don't work thru one of - those online "e-job" companies, - sm

this was a job I got strictly through word-of-mouth. I purposely haven't tried the online transcription job thing (such as e-Lance) because of the sheer volume of lowball bids that come in from... (you guessed it!)- India, Pakistan, Philippines, China, etc. I refuse to put myself back into the position of trying to compete with those countries, as we've been doing with MT.

That's not a bad rate. I sometimes see .65 an audio minute too, which is what I get.

I love getting paid by the minute. I make slightly more money than I did getting paid by the line. I also get through my minutes faster than I did my lines. For example, most days 100 minutes doesn't equal 1000 lines, it's more like 900.

It's also amazing on accounts with those dictators who change their mind 27 times or those who talk ridiculously slow and stop and go "uh, uh, uh" every 5 seconds leaving you with minimal lines but taking lots of time.

I once had a dictation that was 30 minutes of music playing. The doc had done a 1 min dictation then it went to music. There were less than 10 lines on the report, but since I got pad by the minute I didn't lose out!

It definitely has some advantages if you can get a decent rate.

0.6 vs .65 - Used to work for hospital

Are you saying 6 cents a minute of audio. If you are, then that would be a horrible rate. My former employer stated that 1 audio minute averages 14 lines. 60 or 65 cents per audio minute would be much better pay.

I am saying 60 cents per audio minute. I really appreciate everyone's input. nm. - Thanks

Can Someone Tell Me About Pay By Audio Minute/page?

I am getting ready to test for this company (not medical) for a transcription job. Pay Per Audio Talking Minute

Fair Line Rate

Fox Transcriptions Pay Of 40-50 Cents Per Audio Minute
Feb 06, 2013

Even at 50 cents an audio minute, if you get a 10-minute report that would equate to $5.00. Usually it takes 30 minutes to do a 10-minute report so that would mean one would receive $10.00 an hour. If only getting 40 cents, that's $8.00 an hour. PFFT! I don't see how this is any improvement over our standard slave wages, yet their ad sounds like they invented the wheel or sliced bread. With a name like "Fox," it's got to be bad. (Apologies to Smucker's.) ...

Job Pays 30 Cents Per Audio Minute, Geez
Jan 18, 2013

So there is job posted that pays 30 cents an audio minute.  How generous!  You figure depending on the dictator and difficulty of transcript 60 minutes of audio is equal to 3 hours of transcribing.  Granted, most of the time it does not take that long, but just in case for good measure we'll say 3 hours for 60 audio minutes.  Do the math!  30 cents a minute x 60 (1 hr)= 1800.  So another words, if you divide 1800 by 3 you get your hourly rate = 6 buck ...

Update On Fair Hourly Rate Question
Apr 05, 2014

Last week I asked what you all thought was a fair hourly rate for a one-doctor clinic MT. I went to the interview on Tuesday. The job ad was for a "medical records transcriptionist." The office uses an EMR. The nurse practitioner uses the EMR, but the doctor uses a piece of paper that resembles the EMR screen and checks the appropriate boxes and writes additional comments. The job is to take those papers and input the data in the EMR. It's not actual transcription, no headset or foot pedal ...
