50 cents per audio minute? I remember being paid $1.10 - sm

Posted: Nov 26, 2014

per audio minute (as an employee) and ending up making considerably less than my per line rate, so I requested off that account and back onto a per-line account.  I can't believe these MTSOs now.  I've seen others, 40 cents, 60 cents... as ICs no less.  Unbelievable.

As long as people accept that pay they will - SMT

continue to offer it. As long as people think it's okay to outsource to other countries what used to be good jobs here in America, our wages will continue to decrease. I've heard it from people who do that that it is now a global economy so it's okay. We are becoming a one-world economy, not an American economy. How do you feel about that? Now with cheap labor being welcomed into our country by our President, guess what?

Hey, you were the ones who wanted to work at home in your pajamas. Now, no one respects MT because they think it's a jog anyone can do while taking care of infants while running the vacuum and doing laundry. People lost respect for this occupation when the professionalism fell by the wayside. People accept that pay because that is all there is and if a domestic MT turns it down a foreigner will gladly take their job. Blame Obama if you want, but it started long ago under Clinton and Bush Sr. when NAFTA went into effect. A global economy is nothing new. I have no feelings about it because it is what it is but it is not my fault.

I have to agree with #99. The MTs wanting to work - from home for the..SM

the greedy MTSOs, when had they stayed working for the facilities, they would have eventually went home to work anyway though the hospital, clinic etc. with better pay, benefits intact, and somewhat of a reasonable living.

Instead everyone jumped on the MTSO bandwagon who in turn screwed the whole industry. It sounds mean and I don't want to come off as insulting but it seems like that's what happened.
Mts working at home - katrina

I know personally I tried working out for years and ran across so much pettiness from co-workers and so many office politics this is why I wound up at home. Now the good job I once had has went to the dogs, so pretty much any transcription you do from home, whether medical or non-medical the pay is consistently going down. Just time to look for something else.

and what entities first sold us on the idea of working through a middle man and help make that possible if not as easy as .. oh I don't know... answering an ad?

Have some compassion - for your fellow MTs

[ In Reply To ..]
Sheesh, sympathize much? I've never seen a more mean and spiteful post. You obviously have everything handed to you on a silver platter. Not everyone is as lucky as you are. Some of us like what we do. We just wish we got paid a rate worthy of all the crap we have to put up with.

MTs were riding high in the 80s and 90s, I was one of them. Had a cushy hourly paid MT job in MR Dept of hospital, side job transcribing at 12 cents a line. When health care costs started rising out of control (NAFTA, all the uninsured), the brick and mortar had no choice but to slash the easiest overhead--the MT and her desk. The pendulum then swung too far the other way--crappy pay and poor working conditions. I do now see a more balanced approach. There are some great companies out there (decent pay and conditions but they don't fall in your lap), still can get MT gigs in some clinics, and the piranha companies will get some MTs to accept poor pay. Again, how most of life works...down to choice.
Yes, but back in the day MTs had a choice and chose MTSOs - over facilities. SM
[ In Reply To ..]
It's almost like we gave them power over us and the industry. They saw a profit in what we do and took advantage. Now we are being used and barely compensated for what we do. They obviously make a lot of money off us while some MTs sit and wonder where their next meal is coming from.
This is the truth. I agree. - IMANMT2

It's the middle man syndrome and it is very unempowering.

If you could contract directly, would you? And cut all this go between stuff out?
Of course, I would much rather have taken a statutory position then end - working for MTSOs...
[ In Reply To ..]
If money was an issue, let me keep my job as a statutory employee, alleviate the hourly pay and give me a good CPL rate and I'll get my own insurance and work from home. It would have been better for facilities to go that route than to bring the MTSOs in. That way, we would still make good money and the hospitals would save.
well, none of us can return to 'back in the day' - iveseenitall

I don't think we MTs gave up power, not anymore than people who worked at factories gave up their power. It's all progress and change. Survival of the fittest. Adapt. Keep up or get run over.

I wonder if you realize how your post came across. There are those of us who have disabilities that prevent us from going out to work, but are darned good MTs working from home and should be paid for our work. You know, we are the ones who refuse to take handouts. I have put my foot in my mouth a time or two as well.

I don't like the wah, wah, wah it's misleading - IMANMT2

but I agree with the rest of what you said and was surprised when I read it. I thought you were going to say you should just be happy about the cut in pay.

It is unfortunate that Obama and immigration is being brought in on this discussion of line rate. The poster above doesn't understand the timing nor that the main objection to legalizing illegal immigrants from Obama's opposition lies in the fear they will vote republican and NOT work for less money. When Regan legalized the first 10 million they did work for less money and it didn't affect our wages in MT and I notice it didn't slow republicans getting into office. I'm not sure of the connection here to MT and our line rates of at-home MTs but 50 cents an audio minute isn't something I would be interested in. Degree of difficulty aside, that's about 5 cpl.

I also agree that the responsibility for the state MT is in right now, lies solely at the feet of the MT. She/he has no one to blame but herself/himself and our peers. They cannot force you to do what you won't.

I try to avoid cleaning up after VR. I figure if it's not perfect and they still need me (my skills) to use it, if I DON'T clean it up, they CAN'T use it and it will revert back to a better line rate for everyone. They all have different reasons for doing it. I'm single. I raised my kids and when I don't have money, I have nothing to fall back on to pay my mortgage, etc. It's a choice you make.

Fox Transcriptions Pay Of 40-50 Cents Per Audio Minute
Feb 06, 2013

Even at 50 cents an audio minute, if you get a 10-minute report that would equate to $5.00. Usually it takes 30 minutes to do a 10-minute report so that would mean one would receive $10.00 an hour. If only getting 40 cents, that's $8.00 an hour. PFFT! I don't see how this is any improvement over our standard slave wages, yet their ad sounds like they invented the wheel or sliced bread. With a name like "Fox," it's got to be bad. (Apologies to Smucker's.) ...

Job Pays 30 Cents Per Audio Minute, Geez
Jan 18, 2013

So there is job posted that pays 30 cents an audio minute.  How generous!  You figure depending on the dictator and difficulty of transcript 60 minutes of audio is equal to 3 hours of transcribing.  Granted, most of the time it does not take that long, but just in case for good measure we'll say 3 hours for 60 audio minutes.  Do the math!  30 cents a minute x 60 (1 hr)= 1800.  So another words, if you divide 1800 by 3 you get your hourly rate = 6 buck ...

Can Someone Tell Me About Pay By Audio Minute/page?

Pay Per Audio Talking Minute
Jan 16, 2015

Note, these are non-MT jobs. I have been applying to jobs that pay per "audio talking minute." I guess I'm curious what "audio talking minute" means. I'm assuming it means not ...

Experienced MTs; Paid By The Line Or By The Audio Hour?
Jun 11, 2013

I've been an MT for over 5 years and have always been paid by the line. I would think that most MTs preferred wage is to be paid a set amount per hour.  If this were not an option, what has given you more of an income, paid by the line or by the AUDIO hour?  What I'm currently being offered per audio hour comes out to less than what I was paid per line at my previous job, but the reports are easier to understand so it may be worth it.  It is basically both ...
