Paid by audio minute - JW

Posted: Apr 26, 2012

Anyone have any experience being paid by audio minute? I have an offer and want to know the pros and cons if any. Thanks.

This could be a nightmare. If this is to transcribe a meeting with several, terrible sound quality, where you can't identify who is speaking or understand what they are saying without playing it over and over, you won't make anything. If this is a doctor, what you make depends on his or her dictation skills, sound quality and rate they pay. I would definitely ask for a sample of what you will be transcribing before accepting it, or just do one tape on a trial basis.

I worked on a pay by minute system for a number of years. We got a base rate plus more depending on the level of difficulty of the work you transcribed (3 tiers) and there were production requirements in order to remain at that level. It was great when you had long reports and providers who paused a lot, the short reports didn't add up very fast. For me, it balanced out and I did pretty well. As the other person stated, find out what kind of accounts you will have before you commit.

I do p.r.n. general transcription where I am paid by the audio - PJ

minute. I am relatively new to general transcription, so I am about breaking even at what I would be paid by line. I really like the general transcription, though, much better than the medical transcription I did for 7 years, and I have no doubt that I will eventually be making more with this method of payment than I ever did in the MT field.

In my case, you get to listen to as much of the job as you want before you claim it, so you can hear if there are going to be multiple speakers, if there's a lot of background noise, etc., before you decide to take the job.

As in the other two posters' notes, you really need to ask a lot of questions and find out what you are getting into before you take a job that pays by the audio minute.

Can Someone Tell Me About Pay By Audio Minute/page?
Sep 28, 2013

I am getting ready to test for this company (not medical) for a transcription job. They advised me that their starting pay (depending on account) is 0.40 per audio minute up to $1.25 per audio minute and then they have some accounts that pay 0.65 per page up to $1.75 per page. Does anyone know if I could make decent money doing this full-time? I know it depends on speed and quality of audio (which is supposed to be good) but I am just wondering how things go based on this type of pay option. ...

Pay Per Audio Talking Minute
Jan 16, 2015

Note, these are non-MT jobs. I have been applying to jobs that pay per "audio talking minute." These are all basically customer service jobs which might include a little tech help and also might include some upselling. Anyone have a take on this? After I quit MT, I SWORE I would never do any job that was not hourly or otherwise a guaranteed amount per paycheck. Has anyone done this type of work? I guess I'm curious what "audio talking minute" means. I'm assuming it means not ...

Fox Transcriptions Pay Of 40-50 Cents Per Audio Minute
Feb 06, 2013

Even at 50 cents an audio minute, if you get a 10-minute report that would equate to $5.00. Usually it takes 30 minutes to do a 10-minute report so that would mean one would receive $10.00 an hour. If only getting 40 cents, that's $8.00 an hour. PFFT! I don't see how this is any improvement over our standard slave wages, yet their ad sounds like they invented the wheel or sliced bread. With a name like "Fox," it's got to be bad. (Apologies to Smucker's.) ...

Job Pays 30 Cents Per Audio Minute, Geez
Jan 18, 2013

So there is job posted that pays 30 cents an audio minute.  How generous!  You figure depending on the dictator and difficulty of transcript 60 minutes of audio is equal to 3 hours of transcribing.  Granted, most of the time it does not take that long, but just in case for good measure we'll say 3 hours for 60 audio minutes.  Do the math!  30 cents a minute x 60 (1 hr)= 1800.  So another words, if you divide 1800 by 3 you get your hourly rate = 6 buck ...

Experienced MTs; Paid By The Line Or By The Audio Hour?
Jun 11, 2013

I've been an MT for over 5 years and have always been paid by the line. I would think that most MTs preferred wage is to be paid a set amount per hour.  If this were not an option, what has given you more of an income, paid by the line or by the AUDIO hour?  What I'm currently being offered per audio hour comes out to less than what I was paid per line at my previous job, but the reports are easier to understand so it may be worth it.  It is basically both ...
