Profit vs. not-for-profit hospitals... - ...and out-sourcing?

Posted: Sep 13, 2012

Are there any opinions whether a not-for-profit (religious-affiliated) hospital is less likely to outsource their medical transcription work....more likely to try to keep the jobs in-house for their employees?

I had a friend tell me that, about trying to get a job with a not-for-profit hospital near us.  However, though I'm sure they'd LOVE to keep their employees' jobs, I just have to wonder how ANY hospital is able to keep their MT department in-house in this current electronic age and with the fact that there does appear to be tons of money saved by outsourcing the work.

Would love to hear your thoughts about this!  TIA.

The only money saved is going into the MTSOs pockets - doesnt benefit the hospital at all

But man... Those MTSOs are making out like a bandit, hey?

Sorry, but I work for a large religious affiliated hospital and the only thing that has kept my inhouse job so far is the fact we are a union - no outsourcing in the contract.

Sounds like you're very - fortunate! (s/m)

I'm not informed enough to have known that any MTs are unionized. Very fortunate for you! Is that a union for all the hospital clerical workers, Medical Records people, or what? I'm wondering if this hospital my friend was talking about has union workers...I'll have to see what I can find out.

Like I said before--even though religiously affiliated, all hospitals need a lot of money to operate, and the hands-on patient care is always going to come before us MTs.

If they aren't union, I could see a risk that most hospitals will outsource one of these days if they don't already....unless the backlash against offshoring patients' medical records gets strong enough that the doctors insist it remain in-house. The docs had a very strong voice at the hospital where I used to work. Of course, the doctors there probably didn't even know their work was going outside the building, let alone across the ocean, until it was a done deal between the Administration and the MTSO. I have a feeling nobody asked the doctors for "permission"!

The work can be outsourced without the patient records being offshored if it is done in the US.

I just got outsourced last month - Ex-MT

and my hospital is not for profit, so I would say that it doesn't really matter one way or another. If they can find an easier way to save a buck, trust me they will outsource as quickly as they can.

Not for profit - Inquiring minds

Not for profit has nothing to do with religious affiliation. Our local hospital is not for profit but not affiliated with any religious group. Hospitals in our areas with religious affiliations eliminated their MT departments years ago. Being a member of a union does not necessarily mean job security if you are an MT, plenty of union members have lost their jobs to Epic and outsourcing too.

Doesn't make a difference - MT

I work for a religious hospital and it doesn't matter, we are being outsourced as we speak. It all comes down to the bottom line. When we told them what we had heard about the company they are going with they told us everything on the internet was a lie and that we would not be having any more discussions. Just because it is a religious hospital doesn't mean the powers that be care about anything more than the money.

I'm sorry to hear this... - (see message)

[ In Reply To ..]
....and sorry that you're going through this, too. Will you be accepting a position with the outsourcing company or moving on to another job somewhere? I wish I had had a crystal ball when my (for-profit) hospital job was outsourced!

It's disappointing to hear that some of the religious hospitals would feel forced to turn to outsourcing, too; but like I said, with the cost savings for the facility, I believe it's inevitable.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of work I can do that requires a real human (me! LOL) to be there in person...don't want to have to keep worrying that I could wake up one day to find my job has disappeared. My friend who's looking to get on with this not-for-profit hospital....well, I hope she doesn't get burned again, too. :-(

No... - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I will not be accepting the offer. Actually, out of the 14 of us there is only one that might accept it and that is just for insurance. We have all decided that it is not worth it and we're moving on. Two are retiring and one is starting school to become a medical assistant, the rest of us are getting out of the medical field completely.

We all work from home and it is hard to imagine working in an office again.

Good luck to you and your friend.

We are not for profit and not a religious entity - independtly owned community hospital and they outsourced their regular MTs, radiology went to VR, and ER to point and click.

Employees Who Generate No Profit For Nuance
Feb 26, 2015

I just wonder has anyone ever tried to calculate the cost involved in recruiting, hiring and training the long line of people who come through the revolving doors of Scruance? There seems to be a never-ending stream of newbies. Meanwhile, the long-time, loyal, revenue-producing MTs are getting the shaft. And what about the cost of employees who do the recruiting, hiring, training, mentoring, QAing, QCing, auditing, TSMing, COMing and POCing in addition to other nonrevenue-producin ...

Companies That Provide 401Ks And Profit-sharing:

There's just ONE, eensy-weensy little problem with MT companies providing their employees with a 401K as one of their benefits: What person on a measly MT's earnings can afford to put anything into it?????  I can't spare even a dollar at the end of each pay period, and haven't been able to put anything into even a savings account for years.  Did it ever occur to them that a retirement account is USELESS if you don't pay your employees enough to fund it? ...

Why Don't Hospitals . . .
Aug 22, 2014

. . . and larger medical facilities hire disenfranchised MLS to dictate their doctors notes instead of sleep deprived nurses and residents who can't put 2 words together???  I'm not saying all RNs and residents dictate poorly, but in my experience a huge proportion leave a lot to be desired.   What with the doctor and nurse shortage, doesn't it make sense to utilize the MLS' command of medical language?   It would free up the nurses for nursing, the ...

Hospitals/outsourcing

Currently, I have a FT job w/a very large hospital, actually multiple hospitals combined.  We all once worked in the office; however, they sent us all home to work.  There are about 130 hospital transcriptionists.  We also outsource a lot of work to a large company.  There have been so, so many changes - everything from new management, VR, pay for production.....Communication amongst co-workers has disappeared.  Management doesn't respond.  I'm really wond ...

Do You Think MTSOs/hospitals Keep An MT
Jul 23, 2012

I've been applying and applying for every in house MT job that comes along in my area.  I have the skills, I have the experience, and all that.  Even for jobs where I would have been a perfect fit, I'm always passed over.   Although I'm applying for in house, I realize that many of them also have outside vendors for overflow, or did in the past, and are transitioning back to in house.  For quite some time, I've had a suspicion that one bad-apple ...

Golden Opportunity For Hospitals Right Now!
Nov 11, 2010

As we all know, thanks to the way most MTSOs operate, there is currently a glut of experienced, talented, highly-qualified MTs who are looking for something better than just a chickenfeed job at a national.       Some hospitals have begun to question the quality of work they're getting back from the nationals (and the HIPAA compliance), since ever-increasing amounts of the work those nationals have is getting offshored.    & ...

The Hospitals I Work For Are Going Over To Nuance -
Apr 27, 2012

I've been an IC for almost ten years, and just found out that the hospitals I work for are going to be outsourced to Nuance.  It probably won't happen for a while - they're are still in the very beginnings of transition.  When it happens we will be given the option of staying on as employees of Nuance.   From the posts I've seen on the Main Board this scares me a little bit.  I guess I would like to get the inside scoop of whether I want to work for ...

My friend works for a local hospital that I used to work for.  That institution just recently outsourced their MT department to Nuance. The hospital has hired a "Life Coach" to direct their "Learning and Development" department.  They have announced that the L&D section will be "massively expanding" in the near future.  Their mission is to come up with new worthless slogans (like they one they had in place when I worked there) to put on posters plastered all over the hospital ...

Reputable Accounts/Hospitals
Mar 01, 2014

We just lost one of the most respected hospitals in the country to EPIC.  I have a phobia about working on disreputable accounts -- the kind that hire non-English-speaking physicians who prey on old, senile, demented individuals and do consult after consult after consult.  The physicians speak little to no English and in my opinion it is all an insurance scam that the disreputable hospitals happily participate in.  Now I have no choice but to be a hippocrit and work on these types ...

Why Don't MTSOs And Hospitals Get Together And Have BOS Specifics For All Accounts?
Nov 07, 2009

Have been pondering this a lot lately.  Why would the hospitals and MTSOs not want to all have the same specifics so MTs could concentrate on providing an accurate report based on BOS that would then allow all healthcare providers to recognize a standard for their records?  I am so tired of switching to a new account or my backup account and having to change gears to comply with different specifics.  I have one account now that we are told to literally "might as well thr ...
