Opinions please...I work about 15 hours a week - justcurious

for a psychiatrist as a scribe from home.  He has also asked me to make reminder calls to patients for their appts the following day.  I use my land line to make the calls which is not blocked and is listed in the phonebook.  If the patient does not answer the phone I am to leave a message saying only "this message is for XXX, please call XXX at 123-4567 (his receptionist at the office)...as HIPAA forbids giving out any other information.  Rather than listening to the message I leave, a lot of the patients just call my private home.  I don't get paid for this as it's about a 60-second call each time, if that.  Half the time I'm not even sure if it's one of his patients calling or someone else so I go ahead and answer the phone.  Does anyone else find this a bit annoying/leary as these are psychiatric patients, mind you, or is this just the name of the game and I should just chill and be grateful I'm getting in an extra 30 minutes a day pay (a whopping $5) making the calls???  I'm probably more leary than needed, but you just never know what could happen.

I wouldn't do it, especially with my home number - mt

He can either hire a receptionist (as that would be a receptionist's job) or he can get you a business line. No way would I use my home phone. Plus, only $5/day? I actually was in the same situation with a psych that I did transcription for. She asked me to start handling some of her calls from her office during the week. I charged her $15/hour for that, plus what I charged for her reports.

Dial *67 before you dial their number - yours will be blocked

I wonder why it is professionally/ethically important for a scribe who works at home to make reminder calls to patients via her private home phone when the office receptionist or secretary could be making those reminder calls via the office phone before the end of her shift?

If an employer asks you to perform a task that is not in your job description or agreement, you can ask, "Why am I being asked to do this?"

If you feel uncomfortable with your home-phone number appearing on his patients' Caller ID, you can express that concern to him. After all, do the patients have the doctor's home-phone number?

mark your number private - charge him per call

I'd bill him per call. Period.

Also, you can block your number (and should) each time you make a call that has anything to do with his office. I'm a clinician and none of my clients get my home number, but I do call clients from that number.

Buy and charge him for a prepaid cellphone and use that as your "work phone" to make the calls on. Only use it for this purpose.

How Many Hours A Week For Courses?
Dec 20, 2011

Hi.  I'm wondering for those of you who either attend/attended M-Tec or Andrews, about how many hours per week do you spend on the classes (total, including all studying)?  M-Tec's website says 25-30 hours.  Do you find this to be accurate?  I did not see an answer on the Andrews website.  I want to be sure before I commit that I have the necessary time to spend on the course.  While I'm willing to put 30 hours in, I do not want to find out that in re ...

Does Anyone Work 16 Hours/week
Oct 31, 2014

I am PT now but cannot, due to medical reasons, work the 24 hours required.  I am waiting to see if I get disability and, if not, will have to fight with a lawyer to try to get it, in the meantime, I was wondering if anyone works only 16 hours per week, if so, did you need a doctor's note to request this.  I can get a doctfor's note with no problem, but Im afraid MM will just fire me instead and I dont want that to happen until I get disability.  Thanks for any informati ...

Due to medical reasons, I now work 20 hours/week, but have to cut back to 18 hours/week.  I read in the policies/procedures it is okay if you have a doctors note.  I can get a doctors note Tuesday, but I was wondering if anyone is working 18 hours/week and if they gave you any grief or if you know of anyone being fired for requesting 18 hours/week.  Thank you for any information you can give me.   ...

Why Are Companies Stuck On Everyone Working 40 Hours A Week?
Mar 02, 2012

I've got great experience and when I'm scheduled to work, I'm there working.  What the hell difference does it make if I only want to be scheduled for 6 hours on four of my weekdays?  Would they rather I said I would work 8 hours and actually only work 6 like a lot of people? I'm willing to work 10 hours on Sunday, so we're talking 34 hours a week and more if I have the time, and I'm not asking for benefits.  I'm so sick of this job search.  ...
