Best Hours - 30 something

Posted: Aug 28, 2010

I know there are so many on here who are fed up with Medquist.  But, can anyone tell me if there is any shift or days that work is usually available?  Overnight shift?  Evenings?

I have 2 friends who work for MQ and they are not out of jobs when they work.  (well, that's what they tell me).  They said it actually just depends on the account.

Is anybody here OK with MQ, maybe not perfectly happy, but not destitute either?

TIA

I think it does depend on the accounts - Not destitute

I have yet to see NJA on my accounts. I am tier 3 and work a split shift of late morning-afternoon and late evening-early morning, Tuesday through Saturday. I also think it depends on what tier you are as I know several MTs personally who are tier 1 and 2 and are constantly out of work here and moved around quite a bit, and one of them refuses to do ASR and has been moved 3 times this year alone due to lack of work. This may not be the case with all who are constantly out of work, just my knowledge from people I know personally who are.

MQ is not perfect (not sure perfect place even exists anymore) but, after trying some other places and then coming back to MQ, it is the best fit right now for me as far as CPL, work volume, and schedule.

Tier 3 - don't run out of work a lot, but sure - type some horrible dictation.

I am very fortunate with the accounts I have - Not destitute

There are very few really bad dictators comparitively, and they are usually the English-speaking ones, and female. I do a lot of operative reports and they are usually the better dictators, which is not the norm from experience at other jobs. The ones who seem to be the worst are the ER docs, but maybe because they never get any sleep, LOL. I really like the variety of doing the different report types that tier 3 offers, never bored.
In my old life before MQ, Op notes were my - least favorite.

I got paid by the minute of dictation then, and Op notes were a lot of typing in a short dictation. Now they are my favorite thing -- lots of lines, lots of reptition, no um, um, um, um and shuffling through history questionnaires and lab work and lists of medications and talking to the pretty nurses. Just dictation. I wish I could get all Op notes! My how we change during our lives.
I hear ya, sounds like my life LOL - Not destitute

I used to hate them and try to avoid them, now love them as they give me the most $$.

I'm tier 3. - Sleepy

I had NJA for 3 entire days last week.

It depends on the accounts and your CCM.

tier 3 - enigma

I think I only had one or two days where it was all day. Here lately it's just long enough for me to decide to get off the clock and then here comes another one. I've had some days with all helper accounts, though.

Sometimes it seems like someone looks at the system and says, "Oh--people are on with no work--I'll turn on the helper accounts." Really!

From my experience it DOES depend on the account, because - anon

for most of my MQ career (which is soon to end with retirement) I have been on one, and only one, of their larger "legacy" accounts. It almost never runs out of work. I am P/T and do not work after 5 PM, although 1/3 of my weekly hours are on weekends.

I think the quantity of work in your job queue also has to do with your Tier. Tier 3 is qualified to do more than Tier 2, who is qualified to do more than Tier 1, etc.

Realistically, I think even under ideal conditions the future for all of us in this profession, MQ and elsewhere, will be short, regardless of whether we work on "sweetheart" accounts or not. Even in my account, who has been a client of MQ since forever and who is supposedly delighted with our consistently meticulous work, dictators make reference to the front-end editing ASR (non-MQ) platform they also use on-site. It is apparently on board in a beta version until all dictators are comfortable with it. The new generation of docs who grew up with this technology do not balk at using it on the job, and it will make the processing of creating an accurate medical record increasingly faster and cheaper. Offshoring will not be an issue any more. A live MT anywhere will soon be an anachronism.

I don't mean to sound dismal, but please, if your age bracket really is 30-something and you need to support yourself and/or a family for the balance of your working years, get into something else NOW. Nursing, respiratory therapy, EKG tech., medical assistant, anything that a machine can't do by itself. Otherwise you will always be paddling upstream, harder and harder.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Agree and very well said. Nail on the head. - anon

Thank you, could not have said it better myself - Not destitute

I am also nearing retirement, hoping to BE ABLE to stick it out another few years. I tell all the young people who ask me about MT as a career that they would do best to spend their hard-earned money going to school for something else.

I have heard that some hospitals are now bringing in nurses from other countries at a much cheaper rate, so even nursing pay is going to go down to slave wages...may be hard to even get a nursing job eventually if US citizen because these hospitals are getting government incentives to hire from outside the country.

Not a good company since it became affilitated with CBAY - anon

Used to be a good company and decent job. Not in 3 years. Miserable most of the time.

Thank you - 30 something

Thank you all for your replies, with inflammatory negativity, but just how you see it. I have been an MT for 1-1/2 years in a small hospital, but am moving 1800 miles away, and this was the best way for me to keep employment no matter where I go. I hope to have work available, but I am not in the position if I don't make enough, we can't live. So, on that piece I am lucky. I chose MQ obviously because they only require 1 year experience. My plan is to use MQ for my continued MT experience. Many of the other good places require 5 years and over. I wanted to get hired by MQ so that I would not have a break in my employment. I am having my phone meeting today when they ask what hours I want, and so I appreciate all the feedback.

Hoping to become NJA immune, but I know that won't happen.

Thanks so much!

I have only ever worked M - F 7a to 3p shift in the 12 years that I have been here. I NEVER have NJA. I am tier 3. I am more than OK wt MQ. I don't work weekends unless they ask for a bit of help. Monday and Fridays are usually the days with very beefy reports.

Q8h Or Every Eight Hours?
Mar 12, 2010

Only 8 Hours...
Dec 08, 2011

Ok, I'm not as fast as I used to be and the doctors keep giving names of physicians that are not on their list and are spelled different ways so I take the time to look them up because blanks are not a thing I like to leave on a report.  Today we get an email that we can no longer work off the clock which for me is a problem.  Do you take the time to look things up like that or what do you do to get past the OCD of trying not to leave a blank?  I feel like MQ is chasing ...

I have 13 hours left to work at this company and then I am done.  I am typing what I consider good grammar for the ESLs and not worrying about an audit.  My blood pressure has come down.  I am cruising, not swearing and can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and it is not a train.  This company has been wonderful to me for most of my time as an MT.  I am saddened by the changes that have happened in the last few years.  I am going to work in Central Supp ...

How Are You Getting Your Hours In?

How are you all getting your hours in with the current low volumes? I do not work without being paid so I will NOT sit around 16 hours a day waiting for a report or 2 to come trickling in. PT Hours

Why Do They Keep Asking For Extra Hours?

So You Can't Roll Over 40 Hours PTO?

2-hour, 2-hours?
Apr 28, 2010

Hello. I've got something I've been wondering about. I know that when saying something like "There is a 2-hour window ..." I should hyphenate 2-hour. What about when the word is plural? For example, 2 hours, 30 minutes, 4 days, etc. Do I hyphenate there? IC With Assigned Hours??

I thought "IC" meant you worked the hours that met YOUR needs.  You're already taking a hit on benefits and taxes, so it would seem that schedule flexibility would be the only reason to opt for IC status.  I applied for a job that was IC with hours of "any time."  When I interviewed for it, they had very specific hours they wanted their ICs to work - all crappy.  I saw another IC job today that was "flexible" but farther down in the ad it stated "third shift full-time."& ...
