So I'm casually cruising the internet, looking for a better job, and come across a website for a career school, and on the front page of their website is a big picture of this happy-looking young mom, sitting there at her laptop PC, with her toddler sitting in her lap, playing with the papers on her desk.

Like.... GAG me! Not only does that reinforce the current stereotypical picture of the bathrobe-clad, pink-fuzzy-slipper-wearing, mom-MT, but..... REALLY! Who in their right mind actually believes anyone can transcribe with a baby in their lap?

I used to do just that when my daughter was born. She is almost 2 now and I still sometimes type with her sitting in my lap. You do what you gotta do. So, yes it is possible and no it does not interfere and has never interfered with my production.

Could you breastfeed her, too, doing MTing? - crap!

Thanks to a Boppy pillow, it was very doable. A bit rough on my shoulders at times, but I don't think it slowed me down. She wouldn't take a bottle!

My problem was with portraying that image as the stereotypical MT.... someone who just needs "something to do". The entire transcription industry seems to have forgotten that most of us are trying to eke out a living doing this.

TOO MANY believe it (excellent advert, aaaaawww!)) that's the reason why we have such an abundance of MTs. It's called MISLEADING, but they still do not get it, MT schools are literally swamped!

But I was able to raise my two children while MTing. I considering myself very lucky.

Not all MTs are old haggard and mean. Some of us are Mommies and it's no different than any other online profession, be that telemarketer, customer rep, etc. Actually some pretty high-paid banking administrators do business from home with a baby on their lap.

So whatever makes you gag, that's your gag, not everyone's...

Anyone that that makes gag must never have breast fed. I have been an MT for going on 17 years and only a mother for 8. So having a kid was not the reason I got into doing transcription at home. I did breast feed my child. I would take a break and do it and actually made good money at the time. The low pay, loss of benefits, etc. has nothing to do with MTs not being professionals. It has to do with greed and outsourcing of work to other countries. Like I said when I started this, I worked for a small company that had all benefits, bonuses, PTO, etc. and the pay was excellent. They were bought out by a huge company and the pay and everything else went down hill. So, yes you can do an extremely professional excellent job and take care of a child at the same time if you are good at what you do. Just my opinion.

this is not the right way to do, not for the mother and not or the baby; just on the "side," being occupied with something else.
How negligent to the baby. This is, or at least should be, a special bonding time between the mother and the baby, and should not be done automatically, the mother having her brain and feelings occupied with MTing, or whatever else.

I think every breastfeeding MT should and can spare 10 minutes and devote hersef entirely to her baby.

I breast fed my twins while working in an office and I pumped other times while working. What's the difference if we feed them in the privacy of our home office and are still able to work. I worked while I pumped IN an office.

I raised 3 kids that way. Rocked them to sleep on my lap some nights while I typed. I've even held grandbabies now that way, although I'm more apt to stop and rock the grandbabies because my deadlines aren't as pressing.

But I do agree the impression it gives about working at home is not a good one.

Okay, let's sum it up: 1. Imedx hid information on losing more than one account for months, this is a fact. 2. Number one above is confirmed by Imedx having an acct going to EPIC, and a few days later 3 accounts that we "do not have access to anymore" as stated by manager. 3. I just found out about this government program. From what I understand, it helps those who have lost all or part of their hours/income due to outsourcing of their profession, especially us older workers who need to retrain in order to reenter the workforce in another field. I work for a company whose initials are TTS. I was told that QA works on editing and transcribing too and QA has the ability to assign work to themselves. In other words not only do they take work away from the MT but they can choose which work/dictators they want to do. Isn't this a conflict of interest? I know other companies do not allow double dipping but it was confirmed to me TTS does this and that the QA people have the ability to pick and cho ...

Thought I was going to make it through today with no Major error but no such luck. I typed "There are" and they heard "The" Trust me either way the sentence says the same thing and in no way changes the meaning of the sentence so I get dinged a major error for this. I really hope these quality people get good bonuses for these type things. Just another major error to add to my very long list. QA filled in my blank, and the error category is "major" with subcategory "not applicable." Platform is Cornerstone. Keep track of every job you send to QA with blanks or other. Compare job numbers to those jobs that come back with major errors. Want to bet that most of those jobs we have a hard time with are the very same jobs that we are getting marked down for? Most likely the very blank or the very problem we had is what the major error is for. ...
