Just rejected by a company that said I could not work due o tax issues in the state I live. - JW

I just received an email from a company that said due to tax issues, I was not eligible to work for them. Give me an ever-lovin break, I worked for and quit a company in Arizona that I was eligible to work in another state as an employee. Just another excuse they use, although it was nice of them to let me know.

Sounds like they will lose out on a lot of good MTs just cuz we don't live in the right place. I was very disappointed.

What states do you all live in? I am in Michigan and just finished working for a company in Wisconsin, so I'm not sure if it is because they have to pay money to the state or what the deal is. The company in Wisconsin that I just finished working for did not have a problem with it.

Could be the reason but the minimum is low here in CO compared to other states.

Not all companies are licensed to do business in every state of the union. It may be due to the minimum wage in that state. It may be due to the fee to be licensed in a state is too high, and yes, there is extra paperwork because the company has to submit your state tax withholding quarterly to your state. I have been turned down for a job after applying and testing, so now I always find out ahead of time whether they hire from my state. You can also call your state's department of business regulation and find out for yourself whether the company is licensed to do business in your state. The smaller companies probably don't hire from as many states because of the added cost of doing business. The bigger ones probaby don't hire from certains states (like California) because of their stringent labor laws and/or higher minimum wage.

Always check first before testing.

I agree. Would have been much more considerate for them to be more up front and let people know before they go through the usually time consuming and lengthy process of applying for a position. Just plain inconsiderate which seems to be the way of the emplyoment world. Same thing happened to me about a year ago. I live in PA and the job was in New Jersey but I would have been working from home for them. Worked out okay though because a much better job came along for me a few months later!

The company I used to work for converted to all employees a year ago and some people were laid off because of those so-called laws in states that did not qualify. I just bet some of them posted there dismays here on MTStars. I was very unhappy at that point because they cut our pay and from then on it was all downhill because we were expected to type at least 1200 to 1700 lines for type/VR for full time and then pay another $200+ for benefits if you wanted them. I was part time from then on because I had injured my wrist after four months of working with them and could not commit to full time. I left that company last October and have not worked much since then. I am sad that I cannot find work someplace.

Labor laws in some states are more protective of - workers in a variety of ways.

Some states give workers fewer rights and employers more. I live in Georgia and everyone will hire me, but it's nothing to envy.

I was let go from a company after working 5 years for them because they went to employee only and were not hiring in Kansas. I have since had another company tell me they do not hire in Kansas because of tax laws.

ie, AAMT or whatever their name now, if they were looking out for our interests (instead of their own), they'd have seen to it that a law or something was in place so we'd know these things from employers on the front end, IMHO.

Exactly right. The AAMT/AHDI or whatever they choose to call themselves next has never been about the rights of MTs. The sooner MTs are wise to that, the more level the playing field.

even if AHDI somehow could buy enough influence in Congress to get one passed...why? To save us the bother of asking about this issue when we apply? To rescue us from the bother of having to take a test before being denied? Silly stuff.

Our rights are being trampled big time, all right, but not in this matter.

I'm pretty sure my former employer made a mistake on my W2 or made a mistake by withholding state taxes. I live in a state that has no state taxes. My company is in a state tax state. I just cracked open my W2 and it shows state tax withholding. I checked last year's W2 for same company, state (theirs and mine), and nothing is in that box. I have been in the interview process with a national and was informed state tax would not be withheld. In that case, they would also not be paying into unemployment in my state. Has anyone ever had a reversal rejected right off the bat and never even received a confirmation e-mail for it? I put one in the other day and had it say "rejected by admin." What the heck is this and why did this happen??? I never received an automatic email either that they usually send once you request a reversal. MModal made me install Windows Live, but I need to uninstall it. Long story, but it was a disaster.
