This is true, I was told this at least a year ago - When they noticed I was in CA

[ In Reply To ..]
Not sure why they didn't catch it on my resume. They were getting ready to have me test when they caught I was in CA and said they did not hire CA residents.

I'm sure it has to deal with taxes. They don't want - ne

to have to deal with paying taxes in all states that have state taxes. If they are an IC I don't know what their reasoning would be.

It's due to labor laws, not taxes - sm

The main reason why some companies won't hire in certain states like California is due to the fact that these states have stricter labor laws, along with a very good Labor Board that supports the employees.

For example, California has stricter labor law requirements that REQUIRE the employer to pay their employees overtime when overtime is worked. California also requires employers to pay for "downtime." As long as the employee shows up for work as scheduled, the employer must pay them even if the company has no work available for the employee at that time.

So basically, the companies who don't hire California MTs are also usually the companies that will require their MTs to "flex" their time and work extra time to get their lines in, but also tell them not enter that time onto their time cards.

They have an ad on another MT related board and state Illinois applicants only.

It said to reply via email but I did not see one. Do you have an email address for them?

eTransPlus does NOT hire in California either - nm

At least that's what they told me when I applied there not too long ago.

California - 15+ exp

I worked for eTrans not too long ago, and I live in California. OSi also does not hire in Ca. so they tell me. The labor laws and taxes make it a nightmare.

State Taxes Taken Out Reported On W2 But I Live
Mar 02, 2013

I'm pretty sure my former employer made a mistake on my W2 or made a mistake by withholding state taxes.  I live in a state that has no state taxes.  My company is in a state tax state.  I just cracked open my W2 and it shows state tax withholding.  I checked last year's W2 for same company, state (theirs and mine), and nothing is in that box.  I'll be calling them, but does anyone kinow if there may have been a change I didn't hear about?  Or ...

Just Rejected By A Company That Said I Could Not Work Due O Tax Issues In The State I Live.
Feb 03, 2012

I just received an email from a company that said due to tax issues, I was not eligible to work for them. Just another excuse they use, although it was nice of them to let me know. ...

New Hire And OOW - On First Live Day? Sm
Apr 24, 2014

Seriously?  Is this typical?  Love how recruitment hyped this place up.  New PT hire, assigned one primary acct, finished the umpteen hours of training, released to TSM and on my first "live" day of work my account is OOW?  Then receive a zip file of emails from TSM sent to the ENTIRE team which include prior employee resignation letters, employees being reprimanded, and the kicker - TSM acknowledges that the work volume on the account that I was assigned to wasn't ...

Why Don't The Big Companies Want To Hire
May 31, 2010

part-timers for weekend work anymore?  That's the way it was done for years, full-timers for M-F and part-timers for weekends, and it worked great because so many MTs are looking for extra weekend part-time work anyway.  It seems to be mostly the bigger corporations, as usual, changing things for the worse here.  Is it just the laziness of the HR & management people, not wanting to process part-timers?  I suspect a lot of the very-experienced MTs are working at small ...

Any Companies Hire M-F?
May 15, 2014

I know this is an extreme long-shot, but I'm wondering if there are any good MT companies out there that hire M-F and pay a fair line rate (for the way things are today anyway). It doesn't matter to me whether I work employee or IC. I just left Nuance a couple months ago and am working general transcription on my own schedule right now, but it's way too strenuous for the pay rate and the work is sporadic. I've got to figure out my next move, but I hate to go back to working e ...

Will Companies Hire A New MT From Careerstep
Apr 08, 2010

I am taking the Careerstep course and I am going to finish very soon.  I hear that many companies wave their experience requirement if you take the Careerstep course, because it is so thorough and you transcribe so many reports that you can easily find a job.  Is this true?  Anyone out there graduate from Careerstep and find a job easily as a new MT.  I mean how do you get the jobs if you do not have the experience.  ...
