If you see an ad that says "strong ESL experience" does that make you not want to apply? s - AnonMT

Posted: Feb 06, 2010

Sorry but to me that is just asking for your job to be more difficult, to make less money and have more headaches.  Does anyone actualy want to do a lot of ESLs? I don't mind having ESL dictators as part of my job but if it is going to be a large part of it, I avoid that particular job.

That kind of job advertising is like saying "cozy" for a home with about 150 square feet or "handyman's special" for a house that's a dump. My take on it is that they have some really really awful doctors there but are wording it nicely by saying "strong ESL". Just MHO.

Strong ESL i.e. nighmare of your life...run as fast as you can... will need to take sedates if you take that job...and last but not least, 99.9% ESL
LOL

Some MTs are good at ESL..... - Not 4 All

... and don't mind doing them.  ESL is not automatically more difficult for everyone.

I respect the company for stating up front what they are looking for, and good on them for weeding out those who can't or won't do ESL.  It saves both parties the inevitable after-hire frustration.

I might be good at it but I despise it - better than no work - barely

If I'm getting paid hourly, I'll fool around with whatever swill comes my way and churn out perfection sooner or later.

If I'm independently wealthy (or a bored little wifey with a hubby making big bucks) and only work for the challenge and the fun of it, why not?

But no, my pay is based on lines. I need to make a lot of them, or I can't pay my bills. So if I was given a choice between easy accounts I could breeze through because I could actually understand the docs, thereby getting a higher LPH and a higher paycheck, or my usual garbled ESL mess that I have to listen to 5 times before I "get it", giving me a headache, slowing me down and destroying my LPH for the day...my bank account would help me decide!

It really, REALLY depends on the ESL individual. - CrankyOldBroadOnTheBeach

MOST of the ESLs on my primary account try very hard to speak clearly and slowly. Of course, there are exceptions. But for most of them, once I get used to the rhythm of their vocal patterns, they're no more difficult to transcribe than anyone else.

On the other hand, we have a native English speaker who is worse than the worst ESL. "Mumble" does not even begin to describe what he does.

So it really does depend on the speaker.

I agree. Being a native English speaker does not necessarily make somebody a good dictator. People either speak clearly or they don't. People either dictate in a quiet environment or they don't.

The 2 worst doctors I have ever transcribed for were native English speakers, and they were horrible! Dr. A was a woman. If you put your hand over your mouth and talk at warp speed, that's what she sounded like. Dr. B was a man. Let's just say I agree with CrankyOldBroadOnTheBeach that "mumble" does not begin to describe it.

I have some ESL experience, and those doctors were easier to understand than some native English speakers I have worked for.

Every dictator has his/her own quirks, and you need to get used to them. Sometimes this can be very difficult.

To answer the question, I would not automatically avoid applying for a job that specified "strong ESL experience" because you should not assume that somebody will be more difficult to understand just because English is not their native language. It depends on the individual. Things like background noise and eating while dictating bother me more.

May 11, 2011

Okay, I know InScribe LLC (Kentucky) has been on the Boards multiple times (at least monthly, if not weekly, it seems), but I just noticed they have a “Premium” ad at the top of the Job Seeker’s Board.  I guess these “Featured Listings” are not free, as the other listings are.  If I remember correctly, most of the posts on the Boards have been by Newbies, because InScribe evidently is one of the few MTSOs that hire new graduates.  However, it appear ...

Amidst nationwide protests about the minimum wage at fast-food eateries, one burger joint in the Detroit metropolitan area has decided to raise its starting salary to $15. FYI - Those Who Might Apply With Teletrak
Jan 16, 2011

Just want to be sure my fellow MTs are well informed.  If you apply at Teletrak, be prepared to be offered 8 cpl for 65 VBC line - this amounts to approximately 30% reduction in pay with the negative spaces.  I used several old reports and figured line counts all ways and it was almost 30% less each time with VBC.  I was told by the recruiter, "You'll probably have to work a few extra hours a day to make what you're used to, but in order to keep the client in a long-term ...
