Should I even apply? - KJJ

Posted: Sep 04, 2012

I just got an e-mail from a recruiter from Nuance asking me if I would like to apply for a job; i.e. they took over my former place of employment's transcription department and I had originally applied so I could stay on, but then decided not to-thus they still had my contact info. The recruiter said that they had merged with Transcend and that there was plenty of work, etc. I do need a job as my unemployment benefits will be running out by the beginning of the new year, or sooner if phase 3 is not available in my state because of the unemployment rate improving. However, I am somewhat hesistant to apply as I have spoken with a few of my former co-workers who went with Nuance and they said they still are struggling to have enough work; staring at screens with those horrible three words staring back at them "No Jobs Available". Any advice out there would be highly appreciated.

I think NJA is happening everywhere!!! I know I do a fair amount of "computer sitting" waiting for them. Keystrokes apparently has the same problem. I'm of the adage it's better the "devil you know"... Just staying put as I don't think anyone of them is any better than the other.

quit UE and work for Nuance - NO, NO, NO, n.m.

Nuance took over the largest contract of the company where I have worked for nine years so we all lost our jobs. Nuance hired us all. I quit after about a month. Then a few months later one of my coworkers told me that they were paying awesome incentives, which would be a great boost in pay. So I went back to Nuance in February 2012. Incentives kick in after three months. When I was about two months in Nuance added a new QA editor who proceeded to trash our reports. Many of her corrections were "subjective" where it could go either way. Also, she was trashing the templates that the client required us to use. She also was not following the client's style guide. We worked through our supervisor to try to get these things corrected. We couldn't figure out why the QA editor wouldn't follow the client's specs. Well, I was just two days from qualifying for my incentive (which would be good for an entire quarter) when the QA editor completely trashed my report. She marked me off for most of the headers in the template that the client required and the dictator asked me to use for this report. We figured out that she must have been hired because my team's QA scores were so high that they were all getting $250-500+ incentives every two weeks. So just a few days before I qualified she had to do something to get me below 99%. Oh yeah, another thing, not all of the reports that were QA'd count, so the 100s that I received every day did not all count. Needless to say, this dropped me down to 98.98%, so I lost out on the incentive. It was quite upsetting as we had all worked for nine years to make this customer happy and we had the reports down pat, and yet Nuance QA was undoing everything we had worked so hard to establish. Besides that, the communication was horrible. If you had a question that needed answering, it wasn't going to happen. Many times I emailed my supervisor and wouldn't get an answer at all. If I did get an answer, it would be two or three days later, or maybe a week. It was kind of crazy. The pay was just horrible. I am a very fast editor/transcriptionist, my accuracy has always been over 99.5%, and there were days that my pay was only $10 per hour because of not enough work, and because of wasting time trying to figure out how to get incorrect QA marks reversed. I have always loved being an MT, but my Nuance experience was very frustrating and depressing. Oh yeah, did I mention that they send their reports overseas? If you notice that your excellent voice model is all of a sudden a jumbled mess, then you know that your work has been overseas. If you choose to work for Nuance, I wish you luck because you'll need it.

FYI - Those Who Might Apply With Teletrak
Jan 16, 2011

Just want to be sure my fellow MTs are well informed.  If you apply at Teletrak, be prepared to be offered 8 cpl for 65 VBC line - this amounts to approximately 30% reduction in pay with the negative spaces.  I used several old reports and figured line counts all ways and it was almost 30% less each time with VBC.  I was told by the recruiter, "You'll probably have to work a few extra hours a day to make what you're used to, but in order to keep the client in a long-term ...
